USC Saturday Buzz: NFL Draft An Indictment Of Lincoln Riley

Makai Lemon, Romello Height, Zacariah Branch, Ja’Kobi Lane and Emmanuel Pregnon were all selected in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft.

Lincoln Riley had all these players in 2024 and went 7-6 at USC.

Talk about an indictment of his coaching. Seven wins. Branch and especially Height also got noticeably better after leaving USC.

USC won’t want to promote that five of its players from 2024 were picked in the first three rounds, of course.

  • USC held off Purdue, 4-3, last night at Dedeaux Field. The Boilermakers had the bases loaded in the ninth inning with one out but failed to score.

USC ace Mason Edwards struck out 12 and allowed two hits in five innings.

    1. Nothing close to the embarrassment we had from 2021-2024.

Your continued & pathetic efforts to pretend it is, show how desperate you are to try and excuse having been dumb enough to ever think it was the way to go.

This is exactly why I was not nearly as thrilled as everyone else here when we had the #1 recruiting class. I’ll wait to see what Riley & his staff DO with that talent.

    1. Scott’s statement on the 2024 squad is misleading. That team lost primarily because of defense, not offense. The defensive player mentioned is Romello Height. He injured his shoulder in 2022 and then transferred to Georgia in 2023. He didn’t play in 2024. And Branch left because he was beat out by Lemon. Lane needed another year to develop. And Pregnon was a good player in 2024. The problem was with the offensive tackle position and a lack of depth. I think Helton deserves the bulk of the blame for that one. The only player he recruited who played in 2024 was Monheim.

      1. KAM: Then Helton gets credit for the 2022 team that went 11-3.

DON: You can’t be serious, blaming Helton for the 3rd year of Riley Coyote’s 2024 team that only scored 17 points against crummy Minnesota.

      2. As Ed G would say -“its the linesman John. We need the linesman.”

Seriously, we had Elijah Paige playing at left tackle and Mason Murphy at right tackle. Michigan and others ate them up. Paige wasn’t ready and Murphy should have been playing guard. Did not have a quick first step. Miller Moss had 2 seconds to get rid of the ball and took way too many hits. It generally takes 3 years or so to develop a quality tackle. We didn’t have any because Helton’s 2020 and 2021 classes were pathetic along the offensive line.

      3. KAM: And Riley Coyote had 3 years to address the OL situation. $110 million for this!

DON: It’s Riley Coyote’s fault the team regressed in Year 3. It only took Curt Cignetti 2 years to overhaul Indiana from perennial loser to national champion.

Curt Cignetti’s first contract with Indiana was a six-year deal starting in 2024, with an annual base salary of $500,000 and an average of $3.75 million in annual outside marketing and promotional income. Talk about a Best Value!

We are getting worse the longer that overpaid prima donna Riley Coyote coaches here.

  3. Scott, I think that Branch was a freshman All American at USC but didn’t progress his sophomore year. A change of scenery was good for him. Nike probably gave Pregnon a better NIL deal and Height was originally from the south and may have been homesick. You win some and lose some. Both Kamari Ransay and Fitzgerald came to USC from the portal and they will probably be drafted today.

Thanks for the report about USC baseball. A team needs at least three great pitchers and a good closer to win the college baseball world series. Do we have at least two more Mason Edwards?

    1. Why did Branch regress so much ? That’s the question you need to ask. Why couldn’t the coaches get the most out of Height ?

SC had a very good starter but he transferred out last year. They have another guy who will pitch today that isn’t bad but most teams do not have a great third starter. As far a a closer, SC doesn’t have a good one. It’s amazing that SC even has a team since they didn’t have a home field to play on for two years ( thanks Bohn and Riley ), who would want to play for a team that had to go to Irvine to play their games, what a fun drive that must have been back and forth, not.

      1. Good points Buddah. With the portal, moves can be unknown….lack of coaching, poor motivation, NIL offers, homesickness, lack of rapport with other players, etc., also, playing time. Branch in his second year seemed unmotivated and living off of his great freshman year. I agree that could be from the lack of great coaching. Essentially sports is a people to people business like most things in our life, and the coach that can relate in many different ways to players can usually get the best out of them. As an old teacher, coaching is teaching and teaching is best done if personalized.

    2. Almost,

I have seen SC play. Pitching has been better this year. They have 31 wins. Last year they went to the playoffs iwth 34 wins. SC has at least another 13 games for the season. If they take 7 of them, that will give them 38 wins. They have two with purdue, three with rutgers, three with oregon, and another three with a noncoference midlevel team, nevada. then they have tournament.

  4. Romello Height broke his arm in the first game of the season and didn’t return, transferred the following year. Should have kept him.

Branch was going to transfer in any case, he saw that Makai and Ja’Kobi were the go-to guys as WRs.

Pregnon: why couldn’t we have kept him his last year?
