USC Morning Buzz: If You Can’t Compete, Just Expand

A 24-team College Football Playoff. A 76-team NCAA Tournament.

It sounds like two guys who haven’t been able to make post-season at USC (Lincoln Riley, Eric Musselman) are coming up with the latest expansions plans, which you just know USC would support unconditionally.

It’s all about making more money and making it easier to participate in the playoffs. Why compete when you just expand? It’s the same reason behind dropping Notre Dame: Not wanting to compete.

It’s sad when USC women’s water polo is willing to play every good team but football is not.

  2. I would not lay the ND-USC football series collapse on LR or USC. It belongs squarely on ND alone. Now, the fact that LR is relieved he does not have ND on his schedule this season is another matter, because that speaks more to his character and bearing, which in turn is why he is not a fit at USC.

      1. This is all on SC. SC made ND move the game back in the day from LATE Nov to October in South Bend because of the cold weather.

    2. I agree with MG. Criticize LR all you want…he is in a high profile position that should take heat. But, ND may be a Catholic school but the people running it are not saints. They could have compromised, but didn’t. That is on them. I would never take the side of ND against our Trojans. And, to reiterate I enjoy all of Scotts posts about anything having to do with USC because everyone who said this is a USC post not just sports is correct. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  4. Joining a conference filled with top 25 football teams [which you have to travel thousands of miles to play in away games…instead of flying a short distance to Cal or Stanford] isn’t exactly evidence of fear….

    2. But bailing out of the ND game because they wouldn’t play us earlier in the season IS evidence of fear.

      It had been that way for generations. No legitimate reason to change it.

      8. Times change, needs change. Why is ND afraid to join the Big Ten? For years ND has been getting its way because of Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy and favorable movies to promote their brand. For years they were the only national brand. The were independent so that they could get the most money. I can’t believe that we waited this long to force them to compromise which they would not do. USC still plays UGLA as our traditional last game of the season just like Michigan plays OSU and Bama plays Auburn. No other top school would play a major intersectional in the middle or end of the season. ND is becoming a second rate school with a weak schedule. The ACC is weak for letting them be in the conference for all sports except football where once again they are unwilling to share revenue. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  5. Simple solution to USC’s problem of not wanting to play tough opponents yet make the playoffs, move to the Mountain West Conference and play……………..

    Wyoming

    Think Sir Lincoln of The Fetal Position could handle these teams ?

  6. Man what’s with all the animus because we wouldn’t do ‘the princesses’ bidding? I’m willing to admit Riley is flummoxed these past 3 years playing ‘the princess’ – fair point but understand this a long time coming. ‘the princess’ has earned a reputation of always demanding and getting special treatment, privilege, deference. They get a ‘solo voce’ per the football playoffs i.e. they’re not in a conference.

    Many head coaches have real contempt because of how ‘the princess’ is given special treatment – last year the craven aftermath by the playoff committee after ‘the princess’ was denied ‘her’ dance card be punched was pathetic. It continues to feed the narrative of their ‘uniqueness’ but it is also what many always ask….’Why?’

    No program has the leverage vie a vie ‘the princess’ except USC. Cohen et. al knows that – it’s why it matters more to ‘the princess’ than to USC.

    This is a great rivalry – it is the BEST in all of college football but this is ‘the princess’ still demanding special treatment. They need it because they signed that weak 6 games obligation with the ACC – the weakest of the ‘Big 4’ conferences with Miami, FL St. and Clemson angling to leave as soon as it is contractually possible for them to so do so. This is why ‘the princess’ needs USC far more than the counter. I sincerely hope those 3 ACC teams do leave and then let’s see what schedule ‘the princess’ cobbles together.

    Finally someone told ‘the princess’ to get lost. They’ll be back and both sides know it.
