The Crosstown Rivalry Has Neighborly Edge

I hear new UCLA football coach Bob Chesney has purchased a home that makes him neighbors with a member of the USC Board of Trustees.

  • I’ve mentioned a couple new stories I heard about former USC president John Hubbard the past two weeks so for any newbies, here is my favorite Hubbard story courtesy of long-time USC assistant coach Dave Levy.

After USC played Notre Dame in the early 1970’s, Hubbard flew back to Los Angeles on the team plane.

But then he disappeared for two weeks.

“They couldn’t find him,” Levy said. “They eventually found him in Germany on a bender.”

Those were the days. Before social media. Or cell phones. A member of the Board of Trustees at the time told Levy that Hubbard was warned to change his behavior after the incident or risk being fired. Hubbard ended serving until 1980.

    1. You know it Ed, they are just around the corner from you and the missus. Give Chesney a few highballs and ask him where they are getting the $$$ to pay all those 4 stars they never could recruit before.

      1. Serve them some of your famous chili Ed. Don’t tell them what type meat you used. That’s a secret. Let them guess.

  1. Great story on Hubbard Scott. Many of the great ones loved the drink – Churchill, U.S. Grant, Mickey Mantle, Bobby Lane, Bear Bryant, ect. USC was a better place when Hubbard was at the helm.
