USC Morning Buzz: A Smaller Recruiting Class On Horizon

Did you catch that USC expects to sign only 16 recruits for the Class of 2027 because it determined the class lack the quality to sign more players per On3?

No doubt this comes via general manager Charmin Bowden.

On its face, I don’t have a problem with signing fewer players if the class isn’t good enough.

But here is my concern: USC is bringing its largest class ever this year (35 freshmen). Followed by a small class. That creates a lopsided roster. Now maybe USC will bring in more transfers next year but if you need to bring in more than usual, you end up lowering your standards.

Do you think Curt Cignetti would do this?

Is it a good move or just another example of Bowden’s arrogance? Time will tell.

USC critics claim a smaller class means there is less NIL money. Who knows?

I think I side with whatever Gary Patterson wants and something tells me he would want more than 16 recruits, especially if his defense gets shortchanged.

  1. Half of the 35 will be in the portal before the season is over, anyway. So who cares if the current class is the largest ever.

    1. Yup! This is exactly what the portal & NIL have made of the off season. (Last move being something our favorite poster would pull.)

“Smash” in slang most commonly refers to engaging in casual sexual activity, or the desire to do so, frequently used in the context of “smash or pass”.

No, thanks. I’ll pass. Please go fantasize about someone else. Probably someone who looks young again, because we all know that makes you have sick thoughts. Your own words, not ours.

  2. Scooter,

After Riley is shown the door, do you think SC will choose Patterson, or go after a coach from where Cignetti coached? I don’t think Jen Taco Lita Cohen can make that big decision.

  3. Scott, you are making a lot of assumptions especially about Coach Patterson. I believe that the 2026 recruiting class had many defensive players so maybe you can also assume the he doesn’t want to recruit just to have more players on the bench. He is already two deep with young players, and if you recruit more young players and they don’t play, you lose them to the transfer anyway and you have been paying them with NIL money. Sometimes less is better. How about interviewing coach Patterson and finding out his thinking directly and then informing yourminions. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  4. To the point Dan makes, we can do a lot worse than having Gary Patterson take on the HC role after LR bits the shed this season. Could we also do better? Very possibly. But it does really really depend on Bowden and Cohen being able to perform a strip-to-the-studs type of interview process involving more than just hallmark coaches in their 60s and 70s in the mix. We need to look at younger coaches who have shown what they can do with the hunger, energy, and drive to want to prove themselves at the next level. In that vein, and I loathe giving them any credit whatsoever, but I think ucla got a steal in their Bob Chesney HC hire…

In 1519, the Aztec Empire was at its height, ruled by Moctezuma II, and controlled a vast territory in central Mexico, including the capital city of Tenochtitlan. This year marked the arrival of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, who would eventually lead to the empire’s downfall by allying with discontented local tribes and launching a campaign against the Aztecs.
