USC Notes: Rivalry Back In News

USC and Notre Dame are talking about renewing their rivalry, per the L.A. Times. The schools never really stopped talking since their series was officially discontinued.

But here’s something interesting: Donors and luxury suite holders have complained to the USC athletic dept. over their disgust with the decision (and the athletic director), which has also played a part in USC’s change in philosophy.

  • USC forward Jacob Cofie was invited to the NBA Combine after an impressive G League Combine.
  • Former USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson has signed a free-agent contract with the Chicaog Bears after attending a rookie tryout at their mini-camp.

  1. KAM::Magic Johnson endorsed USC’s own Karen Bass for re-election as LA Mayor; claiming somehow that she has “decreased homelessness and crime.” Only one problem…

DON: Magic Johnson lives in Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills residents can’t vote for LA Mayor, as BH 90210 is a different city with its own Mayor. Cowardly Gabby hardest hit!

    1. Same old BS

      Kamala, Magic

How Stephen A, Rick Caruso ?

There is no way anyone could honestly support Bass fir second term.

She does not deserve to be reelected.

Living example of failure and incompetence.

      1. Smart people knew this before she was elected, just as with Joe.

But there will still be people stupid enough to vote for her.

  2. KAM: Rece Davis Doubting Riel’s Coyote’s Playoff Chances

DON: According to ESPN’s College GameDay host Rece Davis, USC is unlikely to win 10 games this season, and failing to reach that benchmark likely means that the Trojans will fail to miss the CFP for another year.

      1. KAM: All of a sudden CA Dems think the “Top 2” primary isn’t fair.

DON: I’m not going to get out of their way while they dismantle it, that’s for damn sure

  3. It makes sense that the donors are not happy with Jen Cohen. They funded the new football facility and a competitive NIL, everything she asked for, and then she cancels the ND series. I blame ND more than USC but the bottom line is that the donors want the game.

    1. She didn’t cancel it – ‘the princess’ did – Bevacqua made sure 1. he had the BYU game sewed up and 2. alerted his captive ‘NYC’ centered sports outlets ‘know’ before he did his ‘crying jag’ last December. T

he Princess understood the foundation had shifted for everyone else i.e. game opponents and dates played matter in particular for ‘OOC’ but have no impact for them but what they do need is quality opponents and no matter what most think this is the Irish rolling over.

They realize their schedule is weak at best and has been for the past 6 – 7 years. This is why some voters finally said ‘enough’ last November but then cowardly caved going forward ensuring this con job will never be denied their ‘right’ for the playoffs.

I admire Jen Cohen for throwing down the guantlet….this is what the wealthy donors who bemoaned the cancellation don’t understand….suddenly they’re oldest rival says ‘no more’. Where this is going to hit the Irish is what is emerging – forcing them to play tougher opponents not just next year but year after year.

      1. If 2026 ends up looking great —and we gets lots of people returning for 2027—I’m for a last minute Notre Dame addition to our first week of 2027 schedule — played in Las Vegas in the searing heat….

      1. October Sky: Riley/Cohen wanted to play ND in September, the first game of the year. ND had an open date. Coach Freeman was willing to play on that date. It made sense to move the date because USC had 4 top 10 teams scheduled in Oct/Nov and scheduling ND along with these teams was just too much. Nobody should be expected to play 5 top 10 teams in 6 weeks. After suggesting they would agree to the date change, ND backed out after securing a game with BYU. Under these circumstances, I believe the cancellation of the series primarily lies with ND although others may disagree.

      2. Thanks Plow. Only a narcissistic school like ND thinks that everyone plays their lame schedule. ND would be all in for a schedule change if they were playing four other top ten teams in a six week period. You have to play hardball when negotiating with anyone who feels entitled as ND does. Heck Bama, LSU and other SEC schools play the Little Sisters of the Poor before their rivalry games, so I am one proud Trojan fan who admires Jen for not letting the Princess school get away with their spoiled brat syndrome this time. Let them come crawling back, and I still would not schedule them until they join a top conference like we did. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  4. Six months after one of college football’s most rivals USC and Notre Dame are in active discussions to resume play, The Times has learned.

It’s not clear yet when the rivalry series will return or what the terms will be. A person familiar with the discussions not authorized to talk about them publicly told The Times that Notre Dame is now willing to discuss , which had previously been a sticking point

    1. Southern Cal, hoping for (anticipating?) strength post-Riley, is trying schedule Notre Dame again.

SC previously walked away from decades of October@ND, November@SC games. To avoid all out ridicule, SC made a fake proposal of an unapproved week 0 game.

Any other story is a lie.

  5. wolfman, there you go understating your impact on this issue. the gargoyles sitting on top of Heritage Hall all fear the claw of the wolf! no other beat writer on CA has run coaches outta town like the wolfman!! ask Kiff, who drew down on the wolfman only to be forced to publicly apologize and eventually flee the State leaving his precious Koi Pond behind with the wolfman snapping at his heals!!

  6. KAM: I guess Notre Dame figured that a September date to play SC was a viable alternative to flat-out canceling the thing

DON: Besides, beating SC most years is easy prey and looks good on ND’s resume

  7. DON: Some college football pollster says SC won’t win 10-games, and since 10-2 is the usual cutoff for making the Playoffs. the Trojans will fail another year

KAM: That’s ok. It doesn’t change how I view the upcoming SC-Ohio St game. Or Oregon

  8. KAM: Great to hear the SC-ND football game probably will be reinstated. Their games have created memories

DON: Like in 1964, down 17-0 and SC comes clawing back to beat No. 1 ND; or the Irish getting revenge in 1966, 51-0, and the Trojans in 1967 O.Jing them to death back there

KAM: I don’t go back quite that far, partner. But how about that 2005 game at Notre Dame; they’re still talking about that one

  9. We could beat Oregon and Ohio State at home and still fall short of 10 games. Watch out for Washington at home followed by Indiana and Penn State away. This is a really tough schedule.

    1. If we win our home games [including Washington] and beat UCLA at the Rose Bowl I think we’re in — you couldn’t keep a team that beat the preseason #1 and #2 teams [Ohio State and Oregon] out of the playoffs without diminishing the playoffs themselves…

  10. Best victory ‘V’ over ‘the princess’ was 1970…the rain game…Theismann decided to change the pronunciation of his last name to rhyme with Heisman set a record for passing yardage….but no more ‘perfect’ season…

      1. That June in ‘El Rodeo’ as one turned the pages of the abysmal foitball season after those for the Ucls loss…the next page had

“….and then there was Notre Dame!”

and on the other side was the photo of the late great John Vella with a huge grin on his face.
