USC Morning Buzz: Let’s Look At Perhaps The Best Position On Team

One thing to keep in mind as USC talks to Notre Dame about possibly resuming the series in 2030.

One can assume it’s being done with the idea Lincoln Riley will not be the coach at USC. Riley’s reps put out feelers for other jobs after the season according to Andy Staples. And I don’t think USC would be too unhappy if he left.

  • I ran my depth chart of the linebackers and secondary yesterday. Now here’s a team strength: the defensive line. USC has depth and athleticism here.

I make a big call by putting true freshman Luke Wafle in the starting lineup. Wafle night not start right away but I think he will sooner or later.

DE/Kameryn Crawford*Jr./Zuriah Fisher, So.

NT/Jide Abasiri/Jr./Alex VanSumeren, Sr.

DT/Jahkeem Stewart/So../Floyd Boucard, So.

DE/ Luke Wafle/Fr./Braylan Shelby, Sr.

      1. So nice when Scott removes her stench.

She does to this blog what the valet did to Jerry’s car.

  1. If SC’s linebackers and secondary are only average, then it won’t matter much how good its defensive line is

  2. Here’s hoping we’re in talks with a big name coach to step in when he does leave. The talent & resources are there. Whomever we get needs to remember how small the window for mistakes is at SC. Bringing in Grinch & ignoring the local high schools in the first two years of his tenure set him up for failure.

    1. Yeah, lets go after another big name coach when a little known guy like Curt Cignetti may be available.

Look for guys who have taken lesser known programs and made them better, they are out there, but USC is too lazy to find one.

  3. Bibles of truth coming from buddhakarma above. The next FB HC search needs to be a deliberate, well-researched, analyzed, and vetted hire. Must have a proven track record of winning with less. Winning attitude, drive, and energy, and preferably on the younger side, in the 30 to 50 range tops. LR is just not that guy. Neither was C&H. Nor Kiffin, and pH was not going to wait for him to mature. Sark either. The lazy AD approach to first hire from PCs former staff and hope things go for the best, and then to go with a name rather than character has buried the USC football program in mediocrity for 20 years, when we should be dominating all of CFB…

    1. You have Jen Taco Lita Cohen as the AD. Right there it is a liability. She can handle a medium program like Washington, but she blew the hiring of Mussleman. She then will continue and blow the hiring of the new coach. She needs to be outed as well.

  4. Scott, this is excellent sports reporting. Thank you. Time will certainly tell about the status of LR. In this day and age, head coaches tend to move on every 5-7 years always looking for greener pastures. A great head coach always leaves a legacy of great assistants who know the culture of the team. Don Clark left John McKay and Coach McKay left us John Robinson I. Then, the continuity ended and the searching started anew until Coach Carroll who unfortunately left a coach with potential but not much maturity at the time. Unless Coach Patterson is hired after LR, the search will start again and we can hope for a lucky pick. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. We have new players and young talent that is maturing PT. Keyshawn Silver and Devon Thompkins couldn’t clog up the middle last year. Hell, they looked like they were on roller skates against Illinois and ND. That was the biggest problem on defense. I like the film on the transfer, Van Summerlin. He played in the BIG last year and did not get pushed backward. Stewart played hurt last year and should be an all conference player this year. Crawford has talent and needs to step up. If he does, we will have a very good defense. I like Bouchard too and agree with Scott when he says Wafle needs to play. The improved defensive line should also help the linebackers.

      1. Plow,

You are more up to speed on the players than I am. I also think Nua might be soft as well. SC used to be tough as nails with the defensive four. Hoping it gets back to that.

  5. Hypothetical talk by Wiley–

WILEY: Sure, I’m excited about this year, I finally have enough good players to work with; not since Oklahoma have I had as fine a group. Now of course all we have to do is go out and prove it-

QUESTION: Why haven’t you had as much success at SC after your nice Oklahoma run, weren’t you in 3 National Championship games?

WILEY: 3, yeah– lost all 3. It was just my damn defense that did me in, and now it has followed me to SC

QUESTION: But you got a good ol’ defensive coach now, won’t that make a difference?

WILEY: We’ll see. The proof is always on the field

  6. KAM: So you got this big conference with China’s Xi, and my understanding is you both are worried about Artificial Intelligence having too much control over nuclear arms

DON: It’s a bit broader than that but bottom-line, we are concerned about possible ‘manipulation’ with the AIs
