Morning Buzz: After Wild Weekend Can USC Pull Off One More Win?

What odds would you have gotten Sunday morning that USC would win two games while No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball AND Bruin softball would also lose?

The Trojans got a gem from pitcher Andrew Johnson last night, as he held Texas A&M to three runs in 7.1 innings in a 14-3 victory. Andy Stankiewicz said it was the best pitching performance in his four years as coach.

USC plays Texas A&M at 6 p.m. PT. And the game will be on ESPN2!

Who pitches for USC? No. 2 pitcher Grant Govel, who started Friday, has to be a candidate.

The Trojans are a victory away from playing North Carolina in the Super Regional. USC has scored 48 runs in the past three games. Can it muster one more great offensive effort tonight? It’s been quite a weekend no matter what.

  • Last week, Marcia Lucas died at age 80. She won an Academy Award for best film editing for “Star Wars” and obviously was married to George Lucas for 14 years.

She has plenty of USC ties too as the Cinema School has the Marcia Lucas Post Production Center and she also funded an endowed chair position at the school.

In 1984, the Cinema school opened two buildings — one named after George and one named after Marcia — that were home to the school until George built the the massive current cinema complex in 2009 following his $175 million donation.

  1. Marcia Lucas was a fantastic Trojan and generous donor. She was a perfect example of what it means to be a Trojan….great education and a willingness to give back to our great school. Both Marcia and George make us all proud to be part of the Trojan family. Scott, great report about last weekend. Our thanks to St. Mary”s and Texas Tech for taking care of the baby Bruins. Johnson pitched a fantastic game for us as our third starter, and he is only a sophomore. Tonight is the win or go home game so I am sure that Coach Andy will have everyone ready to pitch at least one iinning except for Johnson or Johnson may pull a Yamamoto and pitch again even after almost a complete game. Adrenalin can be a magic elixir. Scott, when you write like a journalist, you do very good work. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. There are TWO Scotts –(1) Scott the polemicist …and …. (2) Scott the journalist. They’re both fun — the first is fun for being outrageous and the second is fun for knowing how to cover sports [which he did so long for a nationally known newspaper that he sometimes —well, okay, frequently — eschews]….

  2. KAM: Jayden Maiava’s Motivation:

“I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve accomplished yet. I don’t even feel the tiniest bit successful yet. I think there’s a lot that I have to prove and a lot of work that’s still left on the table that I’ve got to go get. Just having that same mentality and mindset going into it, like I still ain’t do nothing — which I haven’t,” Maiava stated in an interview on On3.

DON: After his losing twice to Notre Dame and the last game against lowly TCU I agree with him 100%.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKcc4FULD4Q

    1. I remember the Pitt cheer section telling USC to save some touchdowns for UCLA back in 1965 [turns out we could have used one fewer against Pitt and one more against UCLA]….

  4. The epic bruin collapse yesterday was a shock. Only ucla could faceplant that badly. But now USC will face a highly motivated TA&M team tonight who wants payback for the spanking we gave them yesterday. However, it is refreshing to see that the USC offense seems to be humming along nicely now for a change. But why would Mason Edwards not be a starting pitcher candidate tonight? That kid is the Terminator…

    1. Reports are coming out this morning about several high profile members of the bruin baseball team having serious “Oedipal problems” directly before being eliminated —

      1. KAM: Hilarious that as good as UCLA baseball was this year, their 8 losses consisted of two old Pac 12 rivals…

DON: …and: -UC San Diego -San Diego State -UC Santa Barbara -Sac State -St. Mary’s College (x2) They got completely owned by the whole state!

      1. KAM: Trans athlete wins two new California state track and field titles while competing as a Girl. “Back to back feels awesome.” Male athlete AB Hernandez won first place in the girls high jump and triple jump during the CIF State Track and Field Championships. He also placed third in the long jump, earning medals in all 3 events for the second consecutive year. “I couldn’t get the long jump, but that’s OK.”

        DON: Cowardly Gabby rejoices.
