USC Routs Texas A&M To Complete Regional Comeback!

What a remarkable weekend for USC, which won its first NCAA baseball regional in 21 years.

The Trojans defeated Texas A&M, 7-1, with clutch pitching and hitting for their fourth straight victory in College Station, Texas, after dropping their first game on Friday. USC outscored its opponents, 55-14, in that 4-game stretch and looked reminiscent of their glory teams under Mike Gillespie.

Most teams run out of pitching in Games 4 and 5 of a regional but the USC staff seemed to have an almost endless supply of quality performances while the hitting never wavered.

Starting pitcher Grant Govel held A&M to one run in 4 innings Monday night despite pitching on just two days’ rest. Chase Herrell added 3.1 shutout innings while Sax Matson and Adam Troy were perfect the rest of the way.

Designated hitter Augie Lopez hit a home run with five RBI and the Trojans are off to face North Carolina this weekend in the Super Regional. Lopez was the most outstanding player of the regional.

Maybe the most remarkable aspect of it all is that USC won four games with ace pitcher Mason Edwards throwing only four innings,

USC had been to the Super Regionals five of the past seven years when it lost to Oregon State in 2005. The 21-year drought followed as coach Mike Gillespie was forced out in 2006 by athletic director Mike Garrett.

USC coach Andy Stankiewicz has taken the Trojans to their first back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament since 2002 and they are two wins away from the College World Series.

  • Augie Lopez hits a 3-run homer and USC leads, 5-1, in the 7th inning over Texas A&M.

Augie Lopez gives USC a 2-1 in the 5th inning with an RBI single.

Abbrie Covarrubias with an RBI single and USC ties the game, 1-1, in the fifth inning.

USC first baseman Adrian Lopez throws a runner out at home plate and the Trojans are still down 1-0 as we go to the fifth inning.

And the Aggies hit a home run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.

There is no score early between USC and Texas A&M in the third inning. Grant Govel is starting on two days’ rest for the Trojans.

    1. Great night to be a Trojan. Coach Andy knows how to coach and manage. Govel on two days rest pitched a fantastic five innings, and it was great to see the closer named Troy come into the game and get the final three outs. And, all on national TV which certainly helps recruiting what with the Bruins home watching USC win. Two Quad 1 wins in the playoffs more than makes up for one Quad 1 win during the regular season. MG, this win is for you because you never give up on our Trojans. They are no longer playing over their heads, but rather playing to their potential. Two out of three next weekend and on to Omaha…..anything is now possible. Wish that my good friend Chuck was here to see his Trojans win a regional after a 21 year drought….Chuck was an original baseball booster who could always be seen at homecoming with the baseball boosters. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962.

      1. Don’t worry…I have a feeling Chuck saw it, Ambitious. I think a bunch of my departed Trojan pals saw it too.

      1. Ha! The reason those two organs came to mind is I took a friend to the hospital a few months back and the Physician’s Assistant told me the medications prescribed went through the kidneys so not to worry about hurting his damaged liver…I told her A. I. sez they got through the liver…and she said “Oh, right —I got the kidneys and the liver mixed up.”

    2. Hey MG, maybe Karen can get you some new teeth, beautiful implants, for nothing. Only catch is you have to say your a homeless drug addict. Otherwise, it will be $10,000.

  3. KAM: -That SC baseball team just did the improbable, winning 4 in a row to advance to the next level

DON: -And how about that SC-ucla rivalry, a little like the race between the tortoise and hare, with the hare relaxly eating pizza and ice cream thinking he’s got it made

DON: He’s probably feeling that high about now. And he is enchanted with SC, saying “This is a special place, USC, I’m telling you, it’s different”

    1. Guess what? Everybody is gonna have to get REAL good at forbearance real fast. Not many people know it —but border skirmishes raged all over Europe for 15 years after World War 2 —this isn’t gonna be any different…. but it’s better than a forever war….

  6. Thank you Coach Andy for restoring USC baseball to prominence. We can add the names Edwards, Govel, Johnson, Troy, Lopez, Takeuchi and many others to our pantheon of star players such as Seaver, Randy Johnson, Mark McGwire, Fred Lynn, Boone, Roy Smalley and many many more in our glorious Trojan baseball history. Rod Dedeaux and Mike Gillespie are smiling. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962
