Where Was Mason Edwards Today?

Let’s be clear: Mason Edwards was USC’s best baseball player and this season and was excellent all season.

So that makes me wonder why he wasn’t used with the Trojans’ season on the line in the eighth and ninth innings today?

USC practically wore out Andrew Johnson and Grant Govel in the playoffs and they responded whenever asked. Why was it OK to work them so hard?

But Edwards pitched only seven innings in the entire playoffs. Are you telling me he couldn’t come in for a few outs and a trip to Omaha at stake?

Were USC coaches worried about protecting Edwards’ draft status?

“Edwards was not available,” Andy Stankiewicz said after the game.

This loss is going to haunt USC so it’s worth asking why the ace could not pitch to at least one hitter today?

  1. The bullpen collapse in the bottom of the 9th was abysmal to watch. It is a good question to ask about the whereabouts of Mason Edwards. I hardly see it being a draft status question, but Andy Stankiewicz always seems to be hedging his player decisions for the next game. The real problem USC had as a team this entire year was pitching. Aside from Mason Edwards, and at times Andrew Johnson, there really was no dominant ace on the staff Teams going thru to Omaha typically have at least 3 on their roster. But the real failure yesterday and again today was the lack of offensive output. Where was the steamroller we saw in College Station? This team played too tight when it mattered, when playing loose and having confidence is what wins games. I just hope Andy truly sets about upping the recruiting game, for both pitchers and hitters. We need way more of both. That this team actually made it this far given its talent level was plain overachievement.

  2. Adam Troy- our bullpen ace chokes again. No question Mason Edwards should have been brought in with 1 out in the night. I could not understand why he was not warming up getting ready to face the UNC left handers.

Great year for Trojan baseball…….more depth is needed in the pitching staff hopefully Andy can go out and recruit some depth like UCLA has.

Sad we choked this game……….but if you look at the season Adam Troy was not the guy to bring in especially lately after serving up many late hitting home runs. The guy is not comfortable in a tight game you could tell even though he got that first out.

25 years is too along to not be at the College World Series especially for a program that has 12 national championship still by far the most in college football despite going to sleep for many years.

    1. As usual, Scott asks the question that HAS to be asked. No one else will ask it…no one else wants to ask it….but we’re all thinking it.

Also pretty stupid to claim others are obsessed with you, when YOU’RE the one who posts under their name! What an idiot.

      5. Yes, we should add another name to the long list she’s earned.

From a good movie with Eddie Murphy & Martin Lawrence, “Life”, her name should be the same as one of the characters…Can’t Get Right.

  3. KAM: Wow, the Trojans almost did it with the lead in the 9th inning

DON: But that 9th inning is like a 2-minute drill in football

  4. DON: And wouldn’t you know that a guy named ‘Troy’ would lose for the Trojans

KAM: -A game he will forever carry with him

DON: Yeah, the SC baseball fans will recover quicker than he will. It’s like for example, ‘Time to get up ‘buddy and go to work. It’s Monday morning!’

KAM: Aaah yes, back to reality

    1. Troy blew it. Nerves got to him when he needed steely confidence. He SHOULD face that. Maybe it’ll push him to do better next time he’s in that situation…

  5. The forgotten play in yesterday’s ninth inning comeback by North Carolina was the foul ball that should have been our left fielder’s play coming in rather than having our 3rd baseball trying to make the impossible catch down the left field foul line brick wall. Our left fielder was on track to make the catch, and should called off our 3rd baseman who did not have the correct angle on the ball to catch it. This is fundamental baseball and showed poor communication between our 3rd baseball and left fielder who were both freshman.

If that foul ball would have been caught, and should have been caught that would have been the 2nd out of the ninth inning, and I think kept the momentum in our favor instead things fell apart. Coach Andy Should have had our Ace Mason Edwards warming up in the bullpen so doubt about that especially since their key left hand hitters were coming to the plate. Once has to wonder if Mason Edwards agent made sure he was not available to prevent injury, and to maintain his 1st round draft status.
