Morning Buzz: USC Can Only Take 16 Players And Do Package Deals

I keep questioning this idea USC has a hard-and-fast rule to take only 16 players in its next recruiting class, per Chad “Charmin” Bowden because he said the class lacks quality.

Case in point: The Trojans just received a commitment from three-star linebcker Dylan Wafle committed Monday. Obviously a package deal because he is the younger brother of five-star phenom Luke Wafle.

So that means USC is actually taking 15 players because the 16th is a three star. So much for saying thw class lacks quality and USC will be extra choosy. It makes no sense for Bowden to make 16 a non-negotiable number. If USC can land some top recruits after it finds 16 players, it will expand the class. No matter what Charmin says.

  1. Can’t say the Dylan Wafle is a wasted scholarship. He is athletic and has good size and speed and USC needs depth at the linebacker position. Boston College recruited him. He is a 3 star, not a zero star. Rhett Ellison and Clay Matthews Jr. were considered wasted scholarships at one time and both ultimately made great contributions to the team and Matthews turned out to be the NFL defensive player of the year.

      I hate it when you prove me wrong. I was gonna say that the Wafle scholi was a waste. However, you reminded me of two awesome lbers that were not projected nor was Rey Magulga. Grrrrrr. LOLOLOLOL. Thank you for the reminder.

      1. Pasadena, Ray Maualaga was the highest rank LB in his recruiting class. He was a beast middle LB. Paired him up with Taylor Mays at safety and you had two of the best tacklers in college football. The Wafle brothers are our latest version of the Matthews family. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

      2. Hope you are right ambitious. If the Wafle boys live up to the Matthews family, or are even in the same ballpark, we will have a top 5 defense. I am really high on Luke and something tells me that Dylan may a player as well. There is a history of younger brothers performing well at USC – see the Browner family.

  2. KAM: Irony: Universities since the 1960s have been the center for ‘the world is overpopulated! Don’t have kids!’

    Now the number of universities far outnumber the available students and they’re slowly going out of business.

    This is referred to as an ‘own goal.’

  3. Scotty has gone on and on about SC losing baseball players to the portal. Well Scotty, this is the new ” normal ” get used to it. SC should, but probably won’t, up the NIL for baseball.

    The biggest loss for SC was the pitching coach leaving, hopefully the guy from Hawaii lives up to his cred.

    Last thing, the baseball team was a shatshow since Gillespie was shown the door by cement head Garrett. Stanky had them three outs from the World Series in his fourth year, two of those years were spent traveling to Irvine to play home games.

    From 2003 to 2024, SC made it to TWO regionals. I’d say things are looking up, now finish the damn stadium.

    1. Hard to invest in players when the coach isn’t showing that he or she can win consistently and develop recruits. I agree that we should be investing in baseball for two reasons, great coach and great tradition. If we could get Bennett from St. Mary’s to coach BB, I would back up the Brink’s truck for NIL because he would be selective and build a core of young players to develop as well. Coach Andy deserves lots of support. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

        Coach Andy has been rebuilding the team since he got the job. He should have gone to the playoffs his second year at SC. He has been twice so far and he is going farther every time. He is building a team. It is SC that needs to back him with NIL money. Get that done, then SC will be a serious contender.

      3. Pasadena, I fully agree with you. Invest in the coaches who are doing the job and replace the one’s who aren’t.The old Ronald Reagan saying, trust but verify. Just because a coach had some success at another school, doesn’t mean that he or she is the right fit for USC. Men’s BB will be a challenge for any coach, but more the reason to hire a young coach who has proved himself or herself at a lower level school by developing recruits. Once that person proves that they can build a team, then invest and keep the coach. Just what USC should be doing with Coach Andy. We do have a lot of very good coaches. Women’s BB, soccer, water polo, track and field and others are all good coaches….reward them appropriately. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  5. It is a long way from national signing day. Programs fail, coaches leave, and high school kids change their mind. If a highly regarded interior defensive lineman or linebacker decommits from a school, USC will go after them. The 16 player limit is not set in stone.

  6. wolfman, myself and the Betts sisters (Lauren and Sienna) are appalled to discover that the trOXans have made an offer to the two Bruins sisters’ lil’ brother, 7’3″ Dylan. we demand the trOxans withdraw the offer immediately. word on the street is this kid is the next Walton or Alcindor!! he’s a Bruin all the way, you jive turkeys.
