Morning Buzz: Now This Would Really Be A Gut Punch For USC Baseball

USC pitcher Grant Govel was drafted in the 16th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but what does that mean exactly?

Being drafted in the 16th round is not great. Any bonus the Pirates pay Govel over $150,000 counts against the Pirates’ overall draft bonus pool that it is allowed to pay its draft picks.

So let’s say they offer Govel a $1 million bonus. That means $850,000 would be deducted from their overall bonus pool.

If Govel wanted money, he could have entered the transfer portal a long time ago.And next year he would probably be a higher draft pick.

But this is college athletics, so nothing should surprise anyone. The bottom line is if he left USC, you can just about forget the idea of USC baseball being a top team next season.

  • Meanwhile, USC first baseman Adrian Lopez, who entered the transfer portal, has committed to Oregon. So the Ducks must have some NIL after all.

    1. If our 0-line and running backs stay healthy —- we go 10-2 or even 11-1 …and beat Oregon. It’s that simple.

      2. Healthy or not, no way SC goes 10-2 or 11-1, the stretch from Oregon to Indiana is going to be far to much for this bunch.

  3. Scott is rightly concerned about the possible loss of Grant Govel to the Pirates, but he should also remember that all of the other top teams are also losing players to the draft and the portal. College is where you develop young players not stack them to long contracts. I have confidence that Coach Andy, who developed Edwards, Govel and Johnson will find new young pitchers and position players to take the place of the departed players. He is a good coach and the new pitching coach who is bringing his top pitcher with him to USC will develop young pitchers. Have some faith in the process. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    Yeah, that’s not happening, neither is SC giving nice NIL payments to non revenue producing athletes. Which makes me wonder, do they give NIL to basketball players at SC ?
