Sir Lincoln Of Riley Doesn’t Face This Scrutiny

England fans and their media are demanding Thomas Tuchel be fired after losing to Argentina, 2-1, today at the World Cup. They didn’t like strategy or substitutions.

Imagine if Sir Lincoln of Riley faced this scrutiny instead of four-plus years of indifference from the USC supporters. He wouldn’t have made it past Year 2.

  1. KAM: In the new revisionist movie Odysseus sails home in a Viking ship. The vessel in Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is Draken Harald Hårfagre, the largest Viking ship built in modern times. Built in Haugesund, Norway. Named after Harald Fairhair, Norway’s first king. The Odyssey is set around 1200 BC. Ships like this appeared around 800 AD. The Viking Age is closer to us today than to Odysseus. Homer’s ships were black, low, open galleys, light enough to be dragged onto the beach at night. Not a 35-meter dragon ship built for the North Atlantic.

A sailing reconstruction of a Mycenaean warship already exists: the Argo, 50 oars, built in Volos, Greece. Nolan filmed in Greece. He still picked the Viking ship. This week Draken sails down the Norwegian coast to the Oslo premiere. She will be the most authentic thing on screen. She is 2,000 years off.

DON: Yet Director Christopher Nolan claims the movie can’t have orchestra music because they didn’t exist back then.

    1. I just saw the “Making of The Odyssey” on FUBO —it was somewhat bewildering to hear Telemakhos say to Penelope, “Daddy’s home!”

Homer put it somewhat more poetically: “Oh, he has returned to seize his castle…a lion covered in mud and blood.”

    2. (chortle) we all know why these “historical purists” are so triggered by Nolan’s movie: it’s the black girl featured as Helen! (SHHH! it suggests whites are not superior in every way!)

besides, it’s not a college textbook, it’s art. everyone seemed ok with blonde blue-eyed Jesus, or Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra!

reminds me that my niece reported that her grqdeschool teacher had a Jesus in the class. instead of the “hay-soos” pronunciation, she called him Jesus!

      1. I just wish Charlie would re-read the Iliad and the Odyssey {which Simone Weil called “stories in which Death is the hero”]. If he could regain his appreciation of the Greek-ness of these stories, of Helen’s connection to the Goddess Aphrodite —he might not say such silly things.

      2. it’s obvious Nolan, the clever schoolboy, is sticking his finger in the eyes of MAGA types for a good laugh. they took the bait like a largemouth bass gulping a worm.

      3. c’mon MickeyG, you think it was a coinky-dink Nolan hired Ellen Page of all the young gueys in Hollywood to play Sinon the treacherous Greek soldier?? i haven’t seen such a vicious double eye gouge since Moe Howard was hit in the head with a wrench by Curly.

  3. KAM: England can dissect the game all they want but the fact is Argentina won. The World Cup Finals has come to the entire South American continent, where everybody is saying, “Argentina is Us’

  5. KAM: You are coming on to the 1 1/2 year presidency. How do you account for yourself?

DON: We have come a long way since all-out war with Iran, now we have mild skirmishes. So since things are somewhat settling in over there, let’s concentrate on America

KAM: We can agree on that

  6. Scott, once again you are comparing apples and oranges. The English coach is being pilloried because of his strategy in one of the biggest games in the world. LR has been cricized incessantly by you and other USC critics for four years for not reaching the level of the English team. I don’t know the nature of the English coach’s contract but I bet that it is not 100 million over ten years like LR’s. Far easier to dismiss someone without a big buyout contract. Keep criticizing LR and see what happens this year starting with the Oregon game. Fight on, Dan, class of 1962

    1. Agree as always with takes.

Imagine if Riley is moved out in December 2026 and ends up coaching the Longhorns and is successful.

Wow, Wolf would probably be institutionalized.

DON: The players change but the cause remains: Riley Coyote.
