USC Morning Buzz: A Bullish Season Prediction

Like Joel Klatt and a host of others, J.D. Pickell tends to be a USC homer.

Here he predicts USC goes 10-2 this season.

The only losses are to Oregon and Ohio State. So he’s bullish on USC.

But let’s review his record of opinions on USC.

Here he is downplaying the disappointing 2023 season (which was followed by a worse 2024), by the way. But he will never remind you of this.

      1. Makes sense to say we’ll lose our home games….but win our away games, right?

  1. SC will have at least 4 loses, then it’ll be up the Jen and the BOT if they want to hire a real coach or stay with coach pneumonia

    1. KAM: And what are the odds Jayden Maiava survives the whole season at quarterback with all these brutal defenses he has to go up against?

DON: If he goes down in the Oregon game and we have to play our untested freshman, 6-6 looks more likely.

  2. Scott, isn’t every true USC fan a “homer” as you call everyone who wants us to field the best team possible and hope for the best every year. You complained when USC was continually hiring coaches from within the Trojan family saying that we should be going after the best coaches possible which LR was five years ago. Now, you want someone who knows our USC traditions like a former coach or player. Please make up your mind because your waffling is hypocritical. Pete Carroll was an outsider and he did pretty good. John McKay and Howard Jones were outsiders from Oregon and Iowa. John Robinson was an outsider from Oregon. The only USC family coaches that I can recall are Jess Hill and Don Clark. If LR can’t beat Oregon or Ohio State at home, I will join you in calling for a new coach, but please remember that perfection is the enemy of the good and second guessing is always one hundred percent right. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

      1. MG, are you saying that Scott likes his cake but wants to eat it, too? Does he have a love/hate relationship with USC? So, sad. Thanks, as always, for your perspective to ground me in reality. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

      2. Great question, Ambitious — Yes, Scott wants his cake and wants to eat it too —[he’s first and foremost an entertainer — but he also has a soul —he loves a certain CONCEPT of USC….the concept of USC as Top of the Heap — beating UCLA and Notre Dame back to back — with lots of perfect looking cheerleaders leading the fans —and a Hollywood populated with all the pretty women stars of the 70’s watching on their TV sets]….

    1. AM: True USC Fans aren’t loyal to the hired help.

DON: True USC Fan are loyal to the school they attended, object when the hired help are destroying USC and protect it’s traditions like playing Notre Dame every season.

      1. I’m with you …except for the Notre Dame part….If Notre Dame wants to ever play us again It should be because they are on our Big Ten schedule….

      2. KAM: Last years schedule was much easier. Oregon was the only Top 10 team we played. And yet Riley Coyote flopped.

DON: This year schedule compares to John McKay’s Trojans in 1964. McKay’s solution was to improve, not cowardly drop Notre Dame.

I’ll join with you if we can’t beat Oregon at home on September 26th…. that’s make it or break it time for a lot of fans….

    1. Very Funny, Charlie.

Yul Brynner [the guy whose quote you stole] loved the classics –he particularly loved Homer …and Tolstoy…

  3. KAM: So the range of the 2026 SC football season is 10-2 at the top and 6-6 at the bottom

DON: If you ask the Trojan players they would probably say that 12-0 is their target
