USC Morning Buzz: Here’s One Stat That Always Seems Important

Do you know how many interceptions Caleb Williams threw in two seasons at USC? 10.

Jayden Maiava threw 10 interceptions last season alone. And another six in just four starts in 2024.

It’s important to remember he threw 7 interception in losses to Illinois, Notre Dame, Oregon, and TCU. At least he won’t have to worry about throwing any against Notre Dame this season.

  • USC has re-opened a pop-up shop at the Santa Anita mall in Arcadia. The original pop-up opened last fall but this is in a new location at the mall.
  • LSU canceled 2-game home and home series with Arizona State in 2029-30, per On3. I guess Lane Kiffin didn’t want to return to the site of his last game at USC.

  1. KAM: In the 4 losses last year Maiava was forced to throw because SC could not run effectively

    DON: That changes the perspective on those 7 interceptions

  2. DON: The times have changed since Coach McKay was directing SC bully-style running football, but he would always say how passing the ball had 2 poor possible outcomes and only 1 favorable one

    KAM: He would have to change his style today to accommodate the heavy emphasis on passing

  3. KAM: The Dodgers game uncommonly ended when a Philly baserunner abandoned 3rd base to try to return to 2nd base in order to allow access for the prior 3rd base holder to get back to the bag despite being in a rundown

    DON: The odds of making it out of a rundown are pretty slim, and he admitted it was a mistake to leave 3rd base

  4. Jaden could have had another 5 interceptions on balls that could have been easily picked. Lucky he didn’t.

    But…Caleb never had a tackle like Jaden did…

    1. Gee, he isn’t perfect, but he is still one of the top QB’s in the country. Do even the best journalists make mistakes occasionally? Hmmm….I think so. Scott, it is beneath you to find fault with mistakes when the complete body of work is very good. Perfection is the enemy of the good….and none of us are perfect. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962 P.S. Isn’t the coaching mantra that you win as a team and lose as a team?

    Either Maiava becomes the next Vince Evans where he went from being horrible to winning a Rose Bowl or he stays Maiava and throws another 10 interceptions. My money is on him throwing another 10 interceptions.

      1. What Smith did to Perry was criminal, kid should have never been put at QB, DB was his spot, actually felt sorry for the guy.

      1. It looks to me like Kennedy got more than “the benefit of his bargain” [as in being able to bathe in the luster of 2 National Championships and several Rose Bowls]. I’m not sure what damages he can claim.

  8. Completely avoidable, and a really bad look. Kennedy’s assessment about the state of the program was spot on in 2020. But to the point, the precedent this situation sets for USC obtaining future donations is no bueno. Who will give USC a million dollars to name a field or structure now, knowing that as soon as the decision is made in a couple years to update the grounds, the previous naming rights agreement, made in perpetuity, gets tossed? USC should settle. It is an obvious call.
