USC Sunday Buzz: A Sports Curse Gets Lifted

Do you believe in sports curses?

In 1951, the Mayo football team won the the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. According to local legend, as the team celebrated on the way home in an open-top bus, drove right through a funeral procession without stopping or showing proper mourning respect.

Folklore says an outraged local priest placed a curse on the team, declaring they would not win another All-Ireland final while any member of that 1951 team was still alive. Mayo proceeded to lose 11 straight finals in the past 75 years.

The last living member of the team passed away in 2023. And today in Dublin, Mayo finally won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship for the first time since 1951.

  • This is the time of year when Grizzly bears descend on Brooks Falls in Alaska to feed on salmon. The national park service offers a live cam of the area here and it’s worth a watch.

  1. Ireland is incredibly beautiful (save Donegal) along the edges Mayo has a very striking coast line – one regions has vertical blocks resembling ‘long bricks’ white that face the Atlantic.
Fool thing for a priest to have uttered such as fools there be that ignore said ‘curses’ as meaningless never realizing what spoken words of condemnation, especially from a prelate, what could ensue…..and according to this account did in fact.

What any of this happens to do with USC I know not.

      1. The significance & connection is obscure….only Scott and Charlie comprehend it.

Personally, I think Gabby should post the Cheerleader video again…. so nobody misses it.

  2. one cannot help but to conclude a similar curse has hit SC: until the Dummies, Admin and alums give the wolfman proper respect, they will never make the CFPlayoffs!

Just in case Charlie knows something we don’t know, Jen Cohen should erect a statue of Scott right next to Tommy Trojan…

  3. DON: I’m too much of a pragmatist to believe in curses

KAM: Although maybe there is one on SC football because of the Bush scandal and Carrot leaving SC immediately thereafter before the sanctions hit

      1. Yeah, removing political comments, but posting a grizzly video?! Politics affects USC athletics (from an economic standpoint) more than a grizzly catching a fish.

Has Scott gone Communist? Years of listening to Charlie can take their toll….

  7. Scott, since when did a coaching choice become an exact science. Again, who is your ideal coach for USC. At one time you wanted someone not closely associated with USC; now you want someone with USC tradition and by that you mean the last championship tradition of Pete Carroll who you routinely ridiculed as well as ridiculing Sark and Kiff who came from the Carroll tree. So, I am confused who in your infinite wisdom do you want to coach our beloved Trojans. And, by the way if being a homer means supporting our school isn’t that what loyal alumni are supposed to to or does your win all the time persona come from a deprived childhood. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962. By the way, I have been a loyal USC supporter for longer than you have been born. And, I even appreciate your posts.

    1. This is shaping up to be a truly great college football season. AL is no more and I suspect it shan’t be for many years to come – Sabin knew what legal largesse meant for AL….not easy to entice players to Tuscaloosa when other metropolises and legal money beckon bye bye.

WI, Baylor, OK, NE., TX, TX A&M, OR, CO, Clemson, ‘the princess’ – the coaching staffs are ‘in play’ and heads will roll as they should when salary paid equals mediocrity.
NC’s Belichick is not looking forward to being seen as another great NFL head coach (Walsh) that flamed out as a college one.e’s already having to endure questions of his last 2 pro seasons.

Per USC – this is the year that Riley either produces or is headed for ‘Palookaville’ and he knows it. The OR game is the anvil that will reveal what has Riley faced up to and changed from the last 4 years. Problem is having to wait until 26th Sept. to ‘…find out..’

I sense a great season is about to unfold for Troy.

      1. I feel the same way about the 26th! It’s like what Ali said about fighting Liston: “You can call yourself the greatest for only so long before someone calls your bluff and dares you to walk into the lion’s den and take the meat outta the lion’s’ mouth. If you go in and perish –people will feel sorry for you —but if you don’t go in, everybody will know you were a phony.”

  8. KAM: So much useless sports talk going around. So let’s get to it– I hear that the government is demanding that it needs “more U.S. military assets”

  11. DON: So it is the end of the Alabama football dynasty. Good riddance. Not sure if those SC and Alabama dynasties did the rest of the college world much good

KAM: It is a tough road to the National Championship. Today you have to win 3 more games after the Season is over, whereas in the prehistoric days, winning one Bowl game could win the championship.

  12. DON: It really isn’t like the old days when SC would talk ‘National Championship or bust,’ whereas today it is “I hope SC makes the Playoffs’

  13. DON: You know something else that paying college football players has done?
