Morning Buzz: USC Picked Fourth In Big Ten Media Poll

USC picked to finish fourth in the annual Big Ten media poll conducted by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The poll has only picked the correct champion four of the past 15 years.

As for USC, it’s a nice safe space. Not expected to be in the top three but better than the struggling blue bloods with new coaches (Michigan, Penn State).

      btw, you mentioned in earlier post that donald wants more money for defense —did you know that money is earmarked for defense firms nobody ever heard of? L3Harris and Castelion?

      2. Castelion’s Blackbeard hypersonic missile costs $300,000 to $384,000 per unit, a dramatic drop compared to traditional defense prime suppliers whose hypersonic weapons typically range from $3-$5 million per unit.

        Assuming they operate as well as those from previous suppliers, I say great job!

  2. Thanks Scott, this is realistic. If USC can beat even one of the top three and stay undefeated with the rest of the schedule, USC should be in the playoffs which should be the goal every year. 10-2 gets you into the playoffs. It will all be about the coaching because as we say most years, USC has the athletes. If Coach Pete had coached better in the 2008 loss to Stanford and the championship game against Texas, USC would probably have two more national championships. It’s all about the coaching both in preparation and game management. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. It ALL starts with Oregon. We HAVE to beat them in order to prove to ourselves we can beat the rest [we don’t actually have to beat all of the rest —but we need to believe we can—that could propel us to the 10-2 we need to play for the title].

      1. ooooooh-DOGIE!! Oregon is gonna be tough to beat!!! Devastating team speed and an experienced trigger man!! I reckon the only way to best them will be an effective running game to slow the game down!! A strategy SC abandoned long ago!! I hear Chesney’s offense was run first, mixing in play action deep shots, they are our fifth game I believe so hopefully the line is functioning at top notch cause they will have to for any chance!!

  3. Indiana lost 12 starters, and lost another 24 to end of eligibility, and they still receive 5 first place votes. I’d like to see the hypothetical of Cignetti working with USC’s roster.

    I hope Riley lights an underdog-type fire at practice, whenever it starts, this week or next. But I don’t think he is capable of that.

  5. DON: I still recall SC in the 1960s, ’70s and early 2000s racking up national championships

  6. 4th place is not good enough for Riley to keep his job based on the amount of money invested into the program with new facilities, NIL money, the transfer portal, and of course Sir Lincoln.. Too little too late in terms of performance in the last 4 years.

    I have the feeling USC has also over invested in the basketball program under Mr. Musselman. The problem with basketball at USC due to poor attendance there is never a return on the investment, and I really think USC might make the NCAA tournament this year probably will be on the bubble again which is no big deal.

    My prediction is the AD, Lincoln Riley, and Musselman will all be gone by June of next year. Fans in LA need a consistent winner to attend games not a 1 and one season.

  7. 5th through 18 make sense save I don’t think MI will do that well for 1st year Kyle Willingham…..MI last 3 games are 2 road games @ OR and OH St with a home game embedded against Uclav in the middle… that is a real gauntlet.

    The scribes that make up this poll are overwhelmingly from the mid-west. They still see USC as a interloper and they’re right.

    Interesting rumblings as the ACC continues its’ very very slow death spiral for both Stanford and Cal returning to the new/improved Pac12 (WA St., OR St., TX St. etc.)

    Win as noted by the above (ambitious, 67, Mike and Almost) this means nothing.
