USC Morning Buzz: Gary Patterson Really Wants To Stop Run

Gary Patterson says he might play five defensive linemen in games in order to help stop the run, especially because the defensive line is a position of strength for the Trojans.

“The less you have to add secondary players to stop the run,” Patterson said, “the less chance you have of giving up big plays.”

  • USC is ranked No. 14 in the USA Today Top 25 preseason coaches’ poll.
  • Yet another basketball injury. USC center Eric Reibe of UConn has undergone foot surgery. He will be out an unknown amount of time.
  • Belgian center Onyeka Joe Agu has committed to USC. He averaged 7.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game for Brussels in the BNXT League.

    1. It doesn’t matter how horrible it is. Because no coach before Riley had to deal with NIL. So his win-loss record should not matter and can’t be compared to those who came before him.

Well, according to the Village Idiot anyway.

  1. Best wishes for healing for Reibe. One really worries about the knees and feet with guys over 7 feet. Foot issues led to Yao’s early retirement.

5-2-4 defense. Where is Captain Bob from the 1969 Wild Bunch team? They may have used 5 linemen up front. Weaver, Gunn, Cowlings, Tody Smith, Bubba Scott? Or did Scott sub in?

  2. bold move using the old Eagle defense with 5 down DL’s!! I like ‘67’s idea to rotate Wolfman in as nose tackle! Buddy Ryan used the 5 man line which is why I reiterate my prediction the team will carry Patterson off the field if they beat OR!!
