USC Sunday Buzz: If You Push Aside Tradition, Then You Need To Win

The Salute to Troy kickoff dinner was Friday night at USC.

And for the fifth straight year, Lincoln Riley did not emcee the event. Since at least the mid-1990’s, the USC coach has been the emcee of the dinner. John Robinson used to enjoy it and every coach after him also did it (including Pete Carroll and infamously, Steve Sarkisian).

But the point is they did it. Clay Helton did it, even when the crowd probably didn’t want to hear him. Riley? Well, he’s too important to do it. At least one year, he had his director of operations, Clark Stroud, do it, which didn’t go over well.

The crowd seemed down this year. Why? Maybe the heat? But maybe also because USC fans want more, even with the excitement from the recruiting class and the constant glazing of the team by the fanboy media. It’s going to take some actual winning to get bigger crowds.

    1. KAM: Cowardly Gabby, a phrase like “subjective opinions” is called a pleonasm or a tautology.

Here is what you need to know about these terms:

      Key Terms

      • Pleonasm: Using more words than necessary to express an idea (e.g., “burning fire”).
      • Tautology: Saying the same thing twice in different words (e.g., “free gift”).
      • Redundancy: The general term for words that add no new meaning to a sentence.

      DON: Why “Subjective Opinions” Fits

An opinion is, by definition, based on personal views rather than facts. Therefore, adding the word “subjective” repeats an inherent quality that the word “opinion” already possesses.

      4. When you can’t rebut the message, just critique the grammar. It’s the intellectual equivalent of changing the subject.

  1. i don’t know, wolfman, Lil’ Lord Riles is 6-13 vs Top 25 teams, 0-5 vs Top 10 teams, no playoffs, and you are still so self-important you keep blowing off the boosters and students?? not to mention freezing out the illustrious Scott Wolf??? he must really think he flim-flammed the bigget rubes ever to set foot in the Pac12/Big10!!! total disrespect!! SC built him an entire football center, some claim they leveraged his purchase of huge waterfront mansion, and given him an enormous staff!!! and he can’t be bothered to do anything but lose big games!!

wolfman, you ran Kiff outta town, why not Riles??? oh, i forgot, Kiff made it personal!!

    10/3 Washington
    10/10 @Penn State
    10/24 @Wisconsin
    10/31 Ohio State
    11/14 @Indiana

This is what makes or breaks Riley this year, that 6 game stretch. Go 2-4, he probably won’t have to worry about not attending another Salute To Troy

      1. You’re right.

3-3 is not good either. He needs to go 4-2 against Oregon, Washington, Penn State, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Indiana….

  3. ‘If’ Riley wins no one cares if he did/didn’t attend the ‘Salute To Troy’. Good to see others noting the outcome ‘apres’ the event itself that Sarkisian earned showing up liquored up early afternoon on the practice field.

Howard Jones was a no nonsense grim individual who was also the equal of any opponent of his era….he won and let others ’emote’.

This is going to be a great year for USC – sweetest outcome were to face ‘the princess’ and show how truly overrated C.J. Carr is….it’s going to be a great year,

Mike in a weird equivalency it’s akin to a gifted professor prudently ‘passing’ on being nominated/approved as ‘chairperson’ of a department.. who needs to go to all those ‘dinners’ and ‘dept. fund raisers’..sorryvobe more – or like a Nurse Practioner having all the power of an M.D. ‘but’ none of the legal time consuming headaches of the title.
