USC had the No. 1-ranked recruiting class, no questions asked.
The problem is there is a cottage industry of media/fans who overhype everything at USC, especially the recruiting class. They have done this for months . . . and months.
So is it a surprise that some of the fans that naively listen to these people are then frustrated when the freshmen struggled in the fourth quarter?
It’s like a slap in the face because they never hear anything but how perfect everything is and they cannot comprehend growing pains.
And then the fanboys have to come back by saying, hey relax, they are freshmen. Yes. We know. But you overhyped them for at least a year!
Wolf should give what he calls the “SC fanboys” a little more credit than that

Besides, some of the freshmen like Mosley did quite well

Some of the frosh delivered big time, particularly Mosley and Wafle. Bowman, Riddeaux, Alston, Baker, and Dixon-Wyatt look like they will be excellent.

10 pts, wolfman!! no other beat writer has the guts to call out the homers, fanboys and Company Men who populate their fan base and welll DOGGY, the trOJies are loaded with all three!! conversely, Bruin fans are world-renowned for being circumspect and objective. that comes from having dominated the college sports world for decades. when you have Wooden, Kareem, Arthur, Rafer, Jackie, Bill, Anne Meyers, Lisa Fernandez etc etc, you don’t have to gin up the program with such juvenile hype!!

you’re correct, i missed the legendary Troy Aikman, the only NFL QB to win 3 outta 4 Super Bowls!!! the UCLA Pantheon of Sports Greats is a very crowded one! i could also mention Heisman winner Garry Beban, gunslinger Cade McNown the only QB from either school to run the table 4-0 vs rival!!! finally Jonathan Ogden the greatest O-lineman in history narrowly edging out Munoz (foreign born, so pt. deduction)

i was a bit startled by your (juvenile) remark, because in knew for a fact he was born in T.J.! so i turned to my new buddy (AI) and here’s what happened:
🧩 “Why people used to say “Tijuana”
In the 1980s–1990s, several media outlets and football books incorrectly listed Muñoz as being born in Tijuana, Mexico.
This likely came from confusion about his Mexican heritage — his grandparents were from Chihuahua, Mexico, and he has spoken often about his family’s roots.
Once the error appeared in early publications, it kept getting repeated because sports bios often copied each other.”
so now we know my only flaw is having a computer-like mind that pulls up data i scanned 45 yrs ago! pretty sure it was a football card.

One more true frosh shoutout to Boobie, who blocks like nobody’s business:

Boobie’s parents came from Texas to watch the game. His dad said that the heat inside the stadium was worse than Texas, and his wife, who had to have medical treatment for heat exhaustion, got blisters from the seat she was sitting on.

Was it the freshman? Should we relax?
Or was it Riley? These late game collapses have been happening repeatedly with Riley – with starters. This looked just like all those games. Unable to finish. Unable to put the dagger in. Letting teams back in and allowing them confidence. Tulane anyone? This has been happening since these freshman were in jr high.
We shouldn’t relax because it’s Riley. Riley has yet to fundamentally turn around ANY of the weaknesses that have plagued his tenure.

KAM: As I was driving home tonight the national sports radio shows were talking about Riley Coyote’s defense of the embarrassment Saturday in the Coliseum:
“The reality is,” Riley said, “during my years here attendance has gone up every single year here, as has our play in the Coliseum, including running the table last year in front of a lot of epic atmospheres and I expect that to happen again this year.”
DON: USC didn’t “run the table” last year, they went 9-4 and USC’s average home attendance actually declined from 71,571 in 2024 to 67,782 in 2025…. Oopsie!
