Reasons For Lincoln Riley To Care About Fans

Over on social media, someone asked me why it matters if Lincoln Riley speaks to fans, students, boosters, etc.?

Well, here is one angle: The college football coach is part of the community and the highest-paid employee on campus.

He wants his community (boosters, alumni) to pay for his new football building. He wants them to give money for NIL. There’s a reason USC is still $25-30 million short on its athletic facilities project.

Let’s remember that it was Pete Carroll’s football success (and his willingness to befriend everyone from the janitors to the millionaires) that led to the money for the Galen Center, which didn’t even benefit him.

So even if Riley hates the public, they help pay for his program.

Two seasons ago, he wrote a letter to the students and fans asking them for more support at home games. Did it resonate with anyone? He had no base of support.

Lastly, back in 1996, Mike Garrett wanted to fire John Robinson. There was a lot of support from the alumni and fans for Robinson and it got him one more season. Riley has not cultivated the fan base and lacks any support.

  3. LA Clippers fined $30 million for Kawai Leonard dealings….Leonard gets a $700k fine….Balmer and other executives blocked full 1 year any team mgmt…the death blow next 5 1st round draft picks – gone (2027 – 2031.

    How is this any different than what the corrupt NCAA imposed on USC in 2011? What was the result of that? Remember ‘the princess’ had a ‘vote’ on that Paul Dee star chamber – same Dee that, posthumously, was found out to be totally corrupt.

    No love for the NBA nor for the Clippers but yeah fight!

      1. Got that right Gab but never forget ‘the princess’ had their ‘seat’ to ‘vote’….after all they’re the sole independent (save CT) in all of college football – ergo they ‘always’ get their ‘solo voce’ input.

        DON: Remember in 2014 when they had the super team with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and then it came out the owner Sterling was a Cowardly Gabby style sleaze bag and the team gave up in Game 5 against Oklahoma City? That is a curse.

    3. interesting how trOJie fans immediately identify with the Clippers smackdown! it’s like OJ commiserating with Bill Cosby: “it’s all a set-up!! we’re 100% absolutely innocent!” most people not wearing the burgundy and gold pimp-inspired uniforms of the trOJies agree SC should have gotten the Death Penalty and be booted from the Pac 12. but they still moan and whine about the veritable slap on the wrist they received. and how the trOJies fought to have Mr Reggie’s ill-gained Heisman returned! he must have gotten a kick out of that after he personally tanked the program reneging on his debts to poor Lake.

  4. This is also important when talking about the playoffs championship. Riley wants to win a NC for Riley, not SC. That’s why he doing everything he can to make it easier on him – no matter tradition or what fans want.

    I mean if SC wins a NC without playing ND, is it really a NC?

    He’s Larry Smith part 2. Smith was the first coach without a connection to SC in 30 years. Same with Riley (something the fans reallly wanted). Neither really got the Trojan family. At least, Kiff, Sark and Ed O got it.

    I would love to have Kiff back at this point. He’s different coach than when he was here before. Yeah, he trolls, but so did McKay. I think KIff is a better offensive mind than Riley too.

    DON: No matter the win-loss record, the guy is still owed about $50-mil. That’s usually not pocket change

      DON: Love was taken into custody in Idaho for allegedly stealing over a million dollars from dozens of victims. I wonder how many grifters are out there posing as former USC players?

  6. KAM: SC lucked out with a short week Friday game in order to atone for their mishap last Saturday.

    DON: The flip side is they are tired, and one extra day of rest is best

  8. KAM: I can’t say for certain that I feel differently about the college players now being paid. Dickerson and Bush proved some of that was going on back in their day anyway, just under the table stuff

  10. KAM: You talked about how “tired” the SC players might be, how about adding ‘beat up’ to that list. From my unprofessional eye I see football as a series of individual fights on the line so the quarterback, runner and receivers can get all the glory

    DON: Everybody who plays in a football game is going to feel it the next morning. All are beat up to some extent

    KAM: I cannot imagine 50 or more plays where you’re fighting against a strong big man

  11. wolfman, Lil’ Lord Riley’s behavior since he arrived all point to the simple fact he thought he was going to come in, win a natty, and use SC as a stepping stone to one of the Blue-Blood football programs! not interested in getting involved with anyone at SC cause it was to be a two year lay-over to his dream job! no wonder he’s always annoyed and reclusive, you Dummies have set his time-table back 3-4 yrs!!

    Meanwhile over in Clippersland they lost 5 No.1 draft choices in the future. The richest man in the NBA, Ballmer, just can’t buy himself much of a winner
