An Iowa band member has died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack in the extreme heat at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, according to a news release from the university’s band and music departments.
Do people think it’s a great idea to play these games in this type of weather?
USC was pushing to play Notre Dame in Week 0 and wanted to always open the season with the Irish when the game is at the Coliseum. The Lincoln Riley fanboys kept beating the drum for this to happen.
So what happens if NBC or whoever doesn’t want the game in prime time and decides it wants the game at 12 p.m.?
College football is going to have more Week 0 games going forward. It’s just a horrible idea and ignores the fans or the dangers they face in unbearable heat. Just once, I would like to see USC make a decision based on fan welfare.
- Defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren had his first two tackles of the season last week vs. Fresno State.
- Lincoln Riley said Jahkeem Stewart is participating in practice and close to playing Saturday vs. Louisiana.
- Freshman tight end Mark Bowman was allowed to speak to the media for the first time Tuesday.
“I take pride in my blocking, but honestly, we’re only a couple games in,” Bowman said.

DON: The Iowa student who died had a congenital heart problem
KAM Len Bias and Hank Gathers also died, largely due to having the same problem. Fortunately it doesn’t happen very often

Couldn’t agree more. No need to promote that type of mental illness.

True frosh RB Deshonne Redeaux hasn’t received much discussion, but he looks like he could be a great one, including turning the corner for a TD on two Fresno defenders who seemed to have good angles of pursuit.
He has 10.4 100 meter speed and to my eye, has the quickest initial burst of any of the USC RBs.
Along with Tanook Hines (10.1 100 meters), Waymo, Mosley and Boobie (both around 4.4 40 times), Bowman, 245 lbs and 4.6 40, this might be fastest USC team in some time.

I remember when SC’s defense was fast, but that was 20+ years ago

My sincere condolences go out to that band member’s loved ones.
It’s a dangerous job being in the band. But someone’s gotta do it!

They would be sopping wet after the Rose Parade or a game like the SJSU game.
I’d get mine dry cleaned once a month. But everyone knew that some didn’t get theirs cleaned even once the entire season. (They’re issued at the end of August and not returned until after the season.)

Scooter,
I remember the season starting about right now, the second week of September. Some high schools are playing their fourth game this weekend.

OJ with 345 all-purpose yards against a tough gopher team coached by old school fella Murray Warmath:

And the Gophers were a two time national champion to start that decade (and ranked at the outset in ’68 as I recall) … age of Bobby Bell … OJ fumbled a couple of times early and got benched I believe, but then came up huge down the stretch (and needed since the team had lost some critical personnel from the ’67 national championship team including Ron Gary).

Well, even if they didn’t show him in the video the other night, they’re still honoring him at every game with The Oversized Juice Boxes!
People can claim it’s not for him all they want to, but you can’t think of The Juice & USC football without thinking of OJ. I’m sure someone knew that when they came up with the idea.

wolfman, I recall that when the SC band showed up for the San Jose st game in the broiling heat wearing shirts rather than their band uniforms, some Fanboys on this very blog complained they were slackers for not donning their woolen finery!! I mean, hearing that insipid Tusk is bad enough, we don’t want kids dying for it!!!

You’re right. Just because we did it each & every year doesn’t mean the kids of today can do it. Young people have gotten very soft over the past decade or two. They can’t help that. Our society, as a whole, has done that to them.
I sure don’t want any of our young Trojans dying from it. Although, you do have to wonder if there was some underlying cause in this particular case.

Can’t disagree, kids are WAY softer today. On the other hand seems like every generation of old dudes say the same thing thru the years.

The Golden Gophers were indeed “golden” back in the day, with Bobby Bell, whom I believe finished his degree after he was 70.

Grew up in KC listening to the (then – now it’s me!) Oldsters recalling the Chiefs glory days … they all claimed Bell was regarded as (along with Jim Brown) the greatest football player ever (at least up until then) … an absolute specimen (and along with the degree, either started or lent his name to a rather tasty bbq joint locally).

Scooter,
Being the eternal pessimest and grumpy old man, I forgot to pay my respects for the young man that passed away. Here goes:
May the Dear Lord take him and keep him in his kingdom forever and ever. Amen. God Bless that young man and his family.
