That was one of the most shameful USC losses I’ve witnessed. The blame squarely falls on Charles Nelson Riley. But let’s talk about the recruiting class.

Garbage quote after the game from Riley: “If we’re as good as I think we can be, then we will flip this, we will take this as a positive and grow from it.”

Grandpa Patterson held Oregon to 505 yards offense.

Lincoln Riley really blew it by going for it on 4th down. It allowed to Oregon to go for it on 4th down because the ball was at 42-yard line and Ducks were not pinned deep in own territory

Why go for it on 4th and 7 with 7:15 left?

A dumb penalty leads to a TD drive. Lack of discipline. As usual.

USC comes back and ties the game, 27-27, after the defense finally gets a stop.

Was that Gary Patterson’s halftime adjustment?

It’s 13-10 at halftime. That dirty play has really tarnished the game.

By the way, this is not the first a USC player celebrated injuring an opponent during the Riley Era.

The idiot USC coaches are letting Desman Stephens embarrass the program with his behavior on sideline. They should make him go to the locker room.

The playcalling is a joke so far.

Oregon makes its FG and takes a 3-0 lead.

And it’s a 45-yard run against Gary Patterson’s defense on the first play.

A missed field goal for USC after a couple sacks. Good thing they hired Mike Ekeler.

Alex Graham, who led USC in tackles lst week, is officially out.

Marcus Allen, Carson Palmer, Willie McGinest and Ronnie Lott are at the Peristyle before USC takes the field.

    2. Of all the horrific losses Woodie has caused as the leader of this program, this game illustrated why he will NEVER succeed here. This game showed his ineptitude as a head coach on full display- poor team culture lead by yours truly- Check, the buffoon let that player stay on the sideline after cheap shot- and the moron was celebrating; suspect play calling at critical times- check, the typical melt down in the 4th quarter- check ; the lack of a bonafied defense- check. All of these issues will never improve. This idiot is leading the program to a level that is at embarrassing levels. I had zero expectations this team was going to do something special- but I at least thought they would have won this game with a back up QB- but know, the same issues plague a LR team. Based on this new low, it’s very possible this idiot will lose the next 5 games. I can’t wait for him to spin “ how close this team is” BS. What’s worse- all the good freshman talent that’s on this team will leave because their parents will want them led by a true head coach

  2. I like the spunk among the undergrads this year. Hoping Luke “Wafle House” Wafle gets in Dante’s face the entire game. Ok State shows that Dante doesn’t handle pressure well.

    Patterson, you are in the College Football HOF. Surely you know how to blitz…

And we, who were enthusiastically in the student section way back when, miss McKay’s crushing defenses with the likes of Al Cowlings, Jimmy Gunn, Tody Smith, Charlie Weaver, Willard Scott (not the TV weatherman), Tim Rossovich, Mike Battle, Adrian Young, Nate Shaw, Sandy Durko, et al.  Is requiring Riley and Patterson to restore that level of play on the defensive side of the ball through recruiting and coaching too much to ask? (Rhetorical question: NO!)

    1. KAM: Don’t forget Bob Jensen! Bob was a linebacker and co-captain for the 1969 USC Trojans football team, which had an impressive record of 10–0–1 and won the Rose Bowl against Michigan and finished #3 in the nation. He played under head coach John McKay and was known for his leadership on the field.

      3. Well…. it was a really long try — [maybe a whole 30 yards] —and there was a ton of pressure since it was in the closing seconds of a tie game….oh wait — it was in the first minute…..

    1. Can’t stand Riley and just prior there was a 12 carries for 11 yards for USC rushing stat – but the touchdown was a well designed play (almost too easy – wonder if they picked that up from the Okie State film study).

      when you recruit thugs don’t be surprised when they do thuggish things.

      1. Why?! Lincoln’s team is showing discipline in these closing minutes —blowing the 3 and out with a dumb penalty …and running the kick out to the 15 instead of taking it on the 25…

        PLUS…Lincoln himself looks totally in control on the sideline jumping up & down & screaming…

Same old story , seen enuff Jen, 10 years this clown been has HC at Oklahoma USC , sane thing every year, dumb down sked, beat up on low end teams , choke in every big game, no clue or care about defense and that embarrassing dirty hit and thug behavior that followed, that is Riley culture, soft team , but can thug it up

  25. It was crystal clear to me after the Louisiana game that the team really hasn’t improved at all. The needle hasn’t moved one inch despite all the “off- season positives.” Still not physical enough at either line of scrimmage. Still not disciplined or consistently focused for 60 minutes of play. Overall depth of talent is nowhere near ready for running with the big dogs. They will need to stack at least two more classes like 26 to have the proper talent and depth of talent. The only question now is do you change coaches and staffs again and how long will that rebuild take, or do you keep riding with what you have??

Also if Lollipop 🍭 Lincoln goes to be an offensive coordinator at Texas Tech or A&M or something like that what will happen to the athletes and skill position guys that are already silently committed to SC for 27 and 28?? Also quarterbacks cuz those dudes wanna play for Lollipop 🍭. We make jokes but the man can develop an offense.

      1. KAM: MG, my view from the 40 yard line was that we still had a chance down 7 if Riley Coyote had punted on 4th and 7 and pinned Oregon inside the 10 next to the student section and the Trojan Marching Band.

        DON: That would have really put the pressure on Riola and, if SC held, they would have had great field position and time to score the tying TD and take the game to OT. Instead they failed an all the air went out of the Trojan balloon.https://x.com/SleeperCFB/status/2104040133142233559…

  29. It’s not the talent, it’s the coaching. Not a front 7 that can stop the run up the middle or set the edge, they don’t diagnose, don’t get proper angles, don’t shed blocks, don’t fill gaps… This defense can’t defend the flat, can’t even beat the blocking on screens.

    And there isn’t enough of the size, speed and athleticism combination to not get beat in the secondary, nor is there the coaching and discipline to not blow a coverage nor prevent YAC, prevent the play reaching the sticks, force the opposing team into lots of short plays, long drives, third downs, until the field gets shorter and they make a mistake.

    Turnovers are very important so know where they come from and where they do not. Striping the ball is a much higher and less risky strategy than gambling on picks. Most Ints happen because a QB was pressured during a passing play. I don’t even think the players realize there may be a philosophy and hierarchy of goals, that is, if that actually exist in the mind of the coordinator.

    Riley’s Counter-Trey-is-all-I-Got running attack is the most predictable running scheme in the business. We get it, Riley is passing game oriented, why would he want a to make a run game that’s can get a guaranteed five yards when absolutely needed, or one that is unpredictable? Why would he want a run game that can eat the clock, rest and protect his own defense, grind down an opposing defense, and demoralize an opponent? Why would Riley want to stick with the run when it’s picking up consistent 5+ yards a play?

    The Special Teams emphasis is never there with Wiley, and he doesn’t trust them. Statistically there is no bigger set of plays that determine yardage, possessions, field position and scoring, by far. You want a better and more reliable offense or defense? Get better Special Teams and rely on them instead of too many high risk decisions pressuring your Defense and giving away games.

    But if you are a glorified Passing Game coordinator, you can’t accept that strange reality of football.Riley won’t change. Sorry, he’s not even a passing game coordinator. Start to talk about passes to Tight Ends, big sized possession receivers, passes to the Running backs, switched up launch points and doing more in blocking schemes and Riley gets bored and his mind wanders off. His thing is elite zippy WRs, preferably 4 or 5 wide, and a dual threat QB– period.

    Oh, and he also loves Texas and hates USC and its pretensions and annoying traditions and standards, CA in general, and competition. If only he could move his salary and beach house in LA, and be the coach at Texas but only if they returned to the Big 12. #FireLincolnRiley

  31. DON: For 2 hours last night I kept thinking about the turning point of the game, the roughing the quarterback penalty that quickly turned a 27-27 game with SC having the ball into the ensuing Oregon touchdown making it 34-27

    1. That call was a delayed “extra penalty” for the earlier targeting of Moore. It wasn’t really roughing…. but neutral fans were fine with it…and Oregon fans considered it their due. It ended the game for USC.

    KAM: Oregon Coach Lanning said after the game to recruits– “We are 3-0 against these guys. If you want to play football you should come to Oregon.” If you want to go concert shopping then go to SC

  33. KAM: I gained respect for Oregon’s Lanning. He did get mad and pointed at the SC team after the “disgusting” hit by a Trojan player. But other than that moment he is a cool customer

    DON: The SC kid delivering the illegal hit was not celebrating what he had done, but after being pushed by a couple of Ducks he was taunting them back

    DON: I have seen Wiley buyout estimates in the vicinity of $70-million but he is certainly owed $50-million, and SC doesn’t have that kind of money. If Wiles won’t compromise he remains the Trojan coach

    KAM: I am sure Wiley doesn’t want to go out like this with the Trojan Nation incensed. He is hoping for that one great year to make amends to the fans

    2. For the 20th time or so, USC does not write him a check for $50M+. So it doesn’t need to “have that kind of money”.

      HOWEVER, for the next 5 years he would still be getting paid, along with whomever we hire. Still a pricey situation.

      1. From the front it looked questionable. From the back, you could see our guy direct his helmet at Raiola’s helmet. No question about it.

    DON: The odds of SC winning increased with the Huskies’ loss to Minnesota, but quarterback Williams will have a better day than yesterday with his 2 interceptions and 7 sacks
