Why can’t USC cover tight ends?

Oregon tight end Jamari Johnson was targeted seven times and caught seven passes for 119 yards. He was actually 8 for 8 but a great one-handed catch at the end of the first half was called back for a penalty.

Grandpa Patterson doesn’t cover the tight end. Neither did D’Anton Lynn nor Alex Grinch.

  • I first called Lincoln Riley a fraud about 4-5 years ago. Paul Finebaum used the same word this morning: “Everybody knows who the fraud is. It’s Lincoln Riley…this guy is bringing your program down to the gutter.”
  • One of Riley’s biggest media supporters, Josh Pate, also seems to finally have had enough. “I’m done. Lincoln Riley’s not going to do it for me. I’m done.”
  • Why doesn’t Lincoln Riley let Gary Patterson speak to the media? Patterson has more experience doing it than anyone at USC. And it would be great to know why he is doing certain things schematically with the defense.
  • Did everyone forget how Riley said the new football building was going to make a huge difference?

    DON: Presumably it is an indictment on his coaching ability, but why then did Oklahoma fans become so angry when he left for SC?

      4. The day SC hires Urban Meyer is the day he11 freezes over. It’ll also be the day the LAPD puts and extra 100 officers near USC do deal with the felons he’ll recruit.

        But, I’d hire him in a nano second.

      8. Yeah, Michael, a lot like LAPD & LA County Sheriffs. They may be just as bad as the gang members they arrest. But most people close their eyes to it, “cuz they’re OUR gang members!!” LOL!!

  4. I guess I was just a stinkin’ fanboy back in the day with the hire of Riley when I got excited about the future of USC football.

    Scottie (sadly) nailed it then, and he has literally called it correct 99% of the time since then, including the debacles with the defense, special teams, covering the tight end, covering…well, just about any eligible receiver, clock management, play calling…

    All of the new coaches, including coordinators, reeks of Lynn Swann’s decision to replace pretty much everyone on Helton’s coaching staff after Helton lost to Notre Dame in 2016 or maybe 17

    The issue now is only partially the fact that Riley and Helton are tied 58 games in, at 39-18. The Stephens issue, including the awful sideline antics, is not going away, because of the ridiculous AI-generated apologies (“that is not who Desman is!”), and the fact that Riley didn’t announce in the post-game presser that Desman is being suspended indefinitely.

    1. 67 — It wasn’t even A.I. generated —they stole JuJu’s apology to Vontaze Burfict WORD For WORD [you know, after he slammed Burfict to the ground and stood over him —which actually made me happy & I wished he wasn’t even forced to apologize for it]…….

      1. Burfict was described in the media as on the margin between aggression and crossing the line. Many players thought he was flat out dirty and I thought “good on for Ju Ju. ”

      2. Yeah, I listed it as a tossup on the 14th. But it’s looking as if the Little Gutties will be favored in that one. It would be kind of hilarious if Chesney beats Wiley in his first year. A “What have YOU been doing for 5 years?” moment for the guy who demanded a new football building!

  7. Scott, your bragging is unbecoming of a journalist. Just because others don’t think like you is not a good reason to keep name calling. Does your ego need continual stroking and proof that you are right. Why always comparing your comments to those of others. Just make your comments and the rest of us can judge their correctness. Yes, you were right all along about LR and his capabilities. But, that does not mean that USC fans like me can’t have hope until proven wrong on the field. In the 78 years that I have been watching USC athletics and especially football, I have seen many great wins and also humiliating losses. What I respected through all of those years is honesty from the coaches and players. And, respect for the game. The worst part of the Oregon game wasn’t the loss, it was the lack of accountability on the part of LR for the loss, the assessment of the loss in terms of his coaching, and the antics of Desmond Stephens after he injured an opponent. Stephens’ only claim to fame as a linebacker is an infamous foul. Rather than laughing it up as a good hit, he should be repenting the action and finding ways to be a better LB. Coaches need to tell him the truth that he is doing a lousy job. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

      I wanted Riley to address the problems, to show some awareness of what is happening to his team year in & year out, week in & week out. He seems incapable of doing that. He’s failing a REALLY good bunch of players.

    1. On the other hand, NO judge would accept Riley’s evasions. If you didn’t turn over discovery, have your witnesses in court and your exhibits ready to go —you’d be sanctioned.

    Q: What do they all have in common (besides being unsuccessful, unfit, out-and-out incompetent, or some combination thereof)?

They could have hired us (I know I was outspoken about at the time on this site) and there would have been Urban Renewal instead of Wiley (more I think about it, we should lay off the coyote and call Charles Nelson by an even more appropriate “Miley” since he has taken a wrecking ball to the USC football program since, given my earlier statement, being given the keys by the buffoons upstairs.

        But failing that, I’m with you …
