Does USC have a head coach?

It sounds ridiculous but I think it’s a legitimate question. Who is the leader of the program? USC has an offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator but who is running things overall?

When Desman Stephens got ejected from the game, who was in control of the sideline? No one.

The reason players were unfocused and celebrating while Dante Moore was hurt, is nodody is in charge. Lincoln Riley is buried inside his play calling, Gary Patterson can’t see past the defensive formation and that leaves an army of underlings lacking power or professionalism.

Does that happen under Curt Cignetti? Does it happen under Bob Chesney? P.J. Fleck?

  • Just when you thought things couldn’t get any lower at USC . . .

For years, the radio booth has been a bastion of unprofessionalism but now comes this video, which shows the reaction to the targeting penalty. Pete Arbogast sees no penalty even after watching the replay, while the spotter, Burt Iwata, throws his hands in disgust at the officials over the call.

“It didn’t look like targeting to us,” Arbogast said.

Meanwhile, Shaun Cody, the actual football player, is forced to endure the whole thing but makes his feelings clear with his facial expressions. He’s the only voice of reason.

Jen Cohen has a lot of cleaning up to do with the football program.

  2. the denialisms and whataboutisms from the Fan Boys, Homers and Company Men are tiresome! people are bringing up Lagarette Blunt punching an opponent 20 yrs ago! and failing to mention Chip Kelly immediately suspended him for all remaining games of his senior season inclu bowl game! and what about Hillary’s emails?? i think its safe to say Arbo should consider retirement; when everyone sees it but you, no es muy bueno.

  4. KAM: Regarding the Oregon quarterback being SC speared, there was a small minority of maybe 5% among SC fans who thought no penalty should have been called, even pinning fault on the quarterback for a late slide

  5. Look at the video. The SC kid is going to hit him with his forearm, who teaches anyone to tackle like that ? He was going for a kill shot, kinda got it, acted like a thug and not one adult , if there are any, on the SC sideline grabbed him and sat him down hard.

    SC has to act on canning Puckers, be it now or after the season, they are a national embarrassment with him in charge.

    ArboGASBAG is an embarrassment, always has been. Cody’s reaction is priceless.

    DeBoer might be the next head coach.

  8. Old guys love those dicky SC faux Hawai’ian camp shirts that they sell at the bookstore. He must’ve left his SC matching straw hat in his car. They need to have a moratorium on selling those idiotic faux Hawai’ian shirts all the old alums wear to every game.

    1. There is one common denominator, Lincoln Riley. Riley is soft, will always be soft, never going to change.

      Patterson was let go at TCU because he had no answer for the RPO, he was a stud against the old offenses.

      Lynn is not a good DC, PSU isn’t very good, but they’ll probably beat SC because SC can’t play on the road these days.

      Riley needs to be bought out, last Saturday’s on field mess is still being talked about, and SC better get the next hire right or it’s another 10 years in the wilderness.

      1. Agree, and don’t trust them to get it right. Fingers crossed Jen can identify a good coach. That is what they are paid for. There have to be more Cignettis, Sumralls, Chesneys out there. I doubt we could hire the BYU coach, but he is the kind of guy they should be looking for, he came from oregon state.

  14. Scooter the last 30 years SC has had Robinson II, Hacket, then SC got very lucky with Carroll, the Kiffin, Sark, Helton, and no the Pencil Neck Geek. SC has had 6 bad coaches and one good one. Who in blue blazes does their homework to find a good head coach?

    And do you think for a second that Jen Taco Lita Cohen will make the right decision to hire another great coach? She is too busy partying. She could not hire the next great cook at Taco Lita let alone hire a coach to bring SC back.

    Put a fork in SC. They are done.

USC has had 2 truly good (great) football coaches since the 1950s (McKay and Pete) and both were accidents, not affirmative acquisitions (eg Alabama hiring Saban, Florida and Ohio State hiring Urban, etc). One other was a mistake who at least did well (but not great) with talent (JRob I). USC is a disaster. That sits in the very center of the greatest recruiting ground in all of college football (sports). This compounds the degree to which the others may be judged to have ranged from mediocre (Smith) to atrocious (including Miley Coyote).
