USC Notes: Some Things Never Change

USC was picked to finish seventh in the Big Ten media poll conducted by the Columbus Dispatch. Illinois was picked to win the conference.

  • Did you know Jahkeem Stewart and Jide Abasiri combined for one tackle against Washington?
  • USC alumnus and yell leader Lindley Bothwell invented the world’s first moving (sequential) card stunt in 1922, but since at least the 1970’s the student section has been terrible at card stunts.

That did not change Saturday at the Washington game.

It’s a far cry from 1957, when a UCLA card stunt was sabotaged by USC students who snuck an “SC” into the upper corner.

  1. DON: It’s a sign of the times. Kids today don’t want to be bothered by card stunts

KAM: The current cry is “What’s in it for me?’

  2. DON: At least Abasiri didn’t cost us the Washington game like he did with Oregon and his head-butting

KAM: Stewart might not have been a tackling machine, but he did win the game for the team

    1. KAM: Muscleman is on the hot seat.

DOB: Imagine how upset all the Trojan Fans who read the ESPN poll this summer are going to be if he doesn’t deliver a #11 in the nation performance?

  3. My lucky USC t-shirt was in the wash on Saturday so I wore one that was untested.  That one was deposited in the recycle bin immediately following the game. My sincere apology to Lincoln Riley, Gary Patterson, the USC football team, and the entire USC nation for the wardrobe malfunction. It won’t happen again.

    1. KAM:Even the Times of Troy is saying something is wrong with our Heisman candidate. The Fresno State injury lingers.

DON: He flopped the last 2 weeks.

  4. I was listening to a pod cast this afternoon re the state of college football in 2026. The speaker noted the chaotic state of impatience and anger over hired coaches unable to produce the results expected. He cited Cambell @ PA St. and Whittingham @ MI 1st year already ‘fire him’ and then he segued to Gary Pinkel @ MO, Hired out of Toledo after 2000 and had a 15 year run with the Tigers. Noted first 6 years in conference were 0.500 but then began to steadily win – no no Nat’ Champ as we expect for MO win. But it took a while.
Now comes the IN Hoosier miracle – can Cignetti be replicated? How can a historic doormat in 3 years win a BCS CFP title? Chesney has grace because ‘bel-air tech’ has been a ntl’ joke for nearly 30 years….yes our motto rings true ‘WE ARE SC!’ I understand what alums see on the sidelines…special teams off/on….outplayed defensive secondary a head coach that seemed gifted at OK yet can’t get us to the playoffs. I believe ‘all’ the coaching personnel are learning and that’s because ‘fitting’ all these new recruits in this year is a true challenge esp with a new DC.

Look at the landscape 1st week of October 2026 – there is no true dominant program right now – there are instead a lot of good ones a lot but the days of ‘AL’ and all the rest are over.

Call me contrarian ‘but’  I do believe, and I know I’m echoing Lincoln Rilrey here, but this is about to bear a great harvest of success

    1. Yes, there will be more than one 2 loss team in the CFP.

But seeing how we are going to have AT LEAST 3 losses, we will still be on the outside looking in.

      1. KAM: USC Trojans starting junior defensive tackle Jide Abasiri suffered a lower-leg injury late in the fourth quarter against the Washington Huskies after an inadvertent collision with teammate Luke Wafle.

The “friendly fire” incident occurred during Washington’s final drive of the game. Abasiri had to be helped off the field by trainers with a major limp and was unable to return for the final defensive snaps. Despite losing a key piece of their defensive line front, the USC Trojans Football Team managed to hold on for a 25-21 victory over the Huskies.

DON: Details regarding the exact severity of the injury and his timeline for a return remain limited, but his absence poses a significant concern for a defensive front that relies heavily on his interior presence

    2. It will be clear after this Saturday whether USC is in the hunt, Alv….. but to the naysayers: USC was ready to take that game with Oregon until the refs gave Oregon the ball back after a bullsh*t roughing call [the kind Jayden never gets]…

  5. KAM: I saw where you said that Iran could take out Los Angeles and San Diego

DON: Just a little joke. For me to say Iran could take out Omaha and Des Moines wouldn’t have had the same effect

  6. KAM: So you are passing on the White Out game at Penn St for the Georgia-Alabama game

DON: The winner of the Georgia-Alabama game is going places

  7. KAM: I think Maiava is saving himself for the NFL draft by not running

DON After getting dinged up in the Fresno game he’s probably trying to avoid a career-ender

    1. You keep nailing it this week! Maiava’s agent obviously told him to ‘take it easy’ —–why else was he holding his helmet after a meaningless interception late in the Oregon game? He was thinking, “I don’t want ANY more interceptions on my record —why was I throwing long?!!”
