USC Morning Buzz: Let’s Compare Some Post-Game Moments

I knew I would upset some people on twitter when I asked if John McKay would celebrate beating a 3-3 team like Lincoln Riley at Penn State?

So let’s look: Here is McKay after USC upset No. 1-ranked and undefeated Notre Dame, 20-17, in 1964. The Trojans overcame a 17-0 deficit.

Riley will probably never beat a No. 1-ranked, undefeated team, so we’ll probably never know how he would react.

  • Gary Patterson was finally allowed to speak to the media, although it was the friendly confines of the Trojans Live radio show.

“Me moving up to the box has really, really helped not just with me seeing things, but putting us in a situation where I get more communication from the sidelines

“Moving me upstairs has also helped me get the call in, understand cause I can see it quicker, especially the way people have done things, and it’s starting to pay off.”

A two-game sample against struggling teams seems to prove something.

  • I said before the season the greatest thing about the new football building was that the sycophants would no longer be able to film the players walking up the tunnel to the practice field, and act like this was news.

Midway through the season, it’s been great to no longer have to endure this.

  1. The WolfMaster in rare form and center mass of the target again. Mile Coyote aka Charles Nelson Riley aka Dough’Riley aka George McClellan has never and will never experience a win anything like that (I pointed out in a recent comment that only Paul Hackett was so without accomplishment of any coach who didn’t get tarmac’d or bottled up prior to expiration date). And if he did, judging by his reaction to the Washington and Penn. State games, he would want the Coliseum renamed after him (or what’s left after Miley’s “Wrecking Ball” has destroyed what it once meant).

      1. That score is about as likely as…

        There being no countries
Or nothing to kill or die for
        And no religion, too

Or all people livin’ life in peace
And the world being as one

        Or no possessions
And no greed or hunger 😉

      2. McClellan is as likely to beat Ohio State as Helton was in that Cotton Bowl … if you are thinking it’s remotely possible, to paraphrase the earlier Lombardi story: “If what you’re smoking is that good, I better have some!”

  2. Scott, stop with the name calling; it is petty and unbecoming of a journalist. Just because someone wants to see the positive instead of the negative does not make them a bad Trojan fan. If you want to be a Debbie Downer and never report anything positive that is your choice. If Patterson is feeling good about his change in location and it helps the team that is a good thing. By the way, I was in attendance at the 20-17 victory over ND sitting about ten rows up in the west end zone stands with Rod Sherman coming right at me as he caught Fertig’s pass for the winning score. Probably the most exciting game that I ever saw, and we beat the Heisman winning QB from Mater Dei who really only played one full year at ND. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Scott is smiling, Ambitious. He’s a businessman and a polemicist. If he sees a droppage in hits –he goes nuclear. Remember the John Hurt description of the Alien? “It feels no pain, it has acid in it’s veins, it has no code other than survival —it’s a dangerous sob.”

  3. Ambitious –Scott knows the significance of the Penn State win has nothing to do with Penn State’s record… it has to do with going into a terrible environment [maybe unmatched for hostility] and winning with poise…

    1. …and Scott, please don’t tell us you only go to Insomia Cookies or Five Guys when reportage duties take you around campus. Downtown is just across the 10 Fwy, a few mins away from campus and loaded with fine fare for the feral appetites.

      1. lastly, Wolf, I know on a bad traffic day or any day during rush hour, the drive from campus to Downtown LA could take a half hour, but believe me if you haven’t been to Florence or Joyce, you are definitively “missssseng” out. Tell Lucy I said hi if you go.
