It’s pretty amazing that Lincoln Riley, during his post-game victory lap at Penn State, tried to stick it to anyone who questioned his program.
Why? Because USC plastered billboards all over Southern California in the offseason that said, “The Time Is Now.”
That wasn’t the fans or media making unrealistic claims. It was USC.
So why get defensive when USC plays poorly against Rutgers and Washington while losing to Oregon?
Unfortunately, this is the game coaches like Riley play. He wants everyone to keep their mouths shut and blindly follow him. He wants people to think USC can win a national championship.
And if cracks start to appear in that false narrative or fans express disapproval, he strikes back at them for having the temerity to express an opinion
How dare you questioned him! He just beat 3-3 Penn State!
Unfortunately, the sycophants fall in line with him after such an ordinary accomplishment. But they are not the majority.
- The L.A. Athletic Club held its annual Wooden Award preseason coaches’ luncheon yesterday that features every Division 1 coach from Southern California. But UCLA coach Mick Cronin and USC coach Eric Musselman did not attend.
You know who USC sent instead? Assistant coach Michael Musselman. I’m sure the people who actually paid to go to the event were thrilled.
Scooter,
Damn technology, that sutff sucks.

Scott, how do you take criticism? When you are questioned regarding your snarky comments, you just double down with them. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander….are you the goose or the gander. As to the L.A. Athletic Club, I’m sure that they will survive. Again, it will be what Muscle Man’s team does on the field. For LR it will be the next five games; then you can critique him to your heart’s content. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Dan, Dan, the Company Man.
I get criticized all the time. Shall I fall to my knees and beg the world for forgiveness because I share a different opinion than homers like you?
It’s really about standards. You pretend nothing matters. Sending Michael Musselman to the L.A. Athletic Club is an embarrassment. As usual, you miss the point. The club will survive. But why do you hold such little regard for the people who spent good money on a ticket?
You want me to wait until after the season to criticize Lincoln Riley? It’s Year 5!!!!! How long do you want people to wait?
Open your eyes, Company Man!!

THANK YOU, SCOTT! Most losers would have written (or said) “like ‘yourself’!”
In fact, I’d venture to say that 90% of the population would have and it’s grade school English! People like to pretend that our education system has only recently failed to do its job, when it’s been this way for decades.

The good news about Chesny is that it lights a fire under Riley, though that may not make any difference, as Riley is who he is.

This little twerp’s bullsh*t is gonna get old real fast….
You can’t play “I’m Spartacus!” before every game….after one or two of those the team is laughing to themselves [and at their coach —who’s coming off like a pro wrestler who just won another fixed match]….

Hi MG, I am just a very old Trojan who lives in Boise, Idaho. I always enjoyed Dan Weber talking about USC football and other sports on the Ryan Abraham Podcast. When Dan retired, I looked for another USC site, and remembered Scott Wolf. I believe in respectful criticism, and I enjoy your comments as well as those of 67, Pasadena and others. You have very witty responses as well as insights. Thanks and aloha. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Dan – Dan Weber was the man … I listened to that for years just for him (Ryan is a nice enough guy but he and Shotgun and Keely were a bit to homer/rah-rah for me … and they defended Helton to the end before changing suddenly … why I’m so harsh about those who defend Riley, when it’s obvious he is a failure in the context of being the USC head football coach … Coach Hyde was critical, but often hard to listen to). Dan is probably the best sports journalist I’ve ever listened to. Knew his sports (and more than USC football, which he explained was something he came to late in his career). Knew the ‘game within the game’ as Joe Garagiola used to refer to it on MLB broadcasts. Loved his recalling the USC 23-0 blowout of Auburn in 2003 and talking about how the Auburn coaches, team, and fans, were in awe of that team from the time they took the field for warmups – just by watching Tom Malone boom kicks! Good on you Dan
