The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams, ESPN reports.
The corks must be popping in Lincoln Riley’s office.
Will teams like USC ever play meaningful non-conference games again?
Jen Cohen has promised to play Power 4 teams but has yet to deliver and she’s probably referring to bad Power 4 teams like Stanford.
We already know Riley doesn’t want to play anyone. Now winning Big Ten games will even be less important as more teams get into the playoff.
Riley can schedule three Tomato Cans and go 6-3 in the Big Ten and make the playoffs. Do you like a playoff where 15-16 teams are from the Big Ten and SEC? Maybe you do.
Lastly, going from four teams to 24 in just a few years seems rushed. It’s not what the fans want. But it is what the college football establishment wants.

Why is it you never have anything good to say about Riley Scott? Why is there never anything but your ‘Eeyor’ mindset? Why is it never stated Cohen, ‘in camera’ discussions, was willing to play this year but earlier in the season but ‘the princess’ chose to delay their outrage until they secured BYU as a replacement and even then had to manhandle Syracuse to play thrm on thd 28th Nov.? How about something laudatory for once heck even Papadakis on his recent short 9 minute review of just played games by both USC & Ucla has given pretty fair analysis of the games played. Quit sounding like you have ‘RDS’ Riley Derangemebt Syndrome’ (knowing recent attempts this will be blocked asap).

Scott, did you poll college football fans to know whether or not they like a 24 team playoff. I seem to recall the angst when the NCAA basketball tournament went from 16 to 64 and counting. The MLB playoffs went from 2 to 12. Playoff football is exciting. With the increased number of teams, the likelihood is that there will be more good intersectional games such as the USC vs. ND game that is supposed to restart in a couple of years. There will probably be a limit of five on the number of teams from any one conference. The more the merrier. There is nothing better than the first round of the BB tournament with all of the underdogs playing. Again, Scott, look on the bright side. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Dan – Love your positivity … don’t always agree, but often do … but not on this one … don’t like expanded post season formats. Baseball should have stayed at 4 divisions/teams in my opinion. The NFL playoffs are watered down badly. The only sport that an expanded field works in is hockey (greatest upset in sports history – few talk about because it’s hockey – Columbus sweeping Tampa in the first round in 2019). NCAA basketball took away the advantage of a great regular season in expanding to 64 teams. Similarly (again, in my opinion – others may well disagree), too many games broadcast. I don’t get particularly excited by anything now – growing up, the rare chance to see USC was Christmas. But just my opinion.

James, I believe what the LA Kings did to the Edmonton Oilers waaaaay back in 1982 being down 0 – 5….admittedly it wasn’t a ‘sweep’ nor was it ‘the deciding game’ and yes both teams had won ‘1’ game each but down 0 – 5 with a mere period to go….known as ‘the Miracle on….’ It is the biggest comeback in NHL post-season tournament play.
