USC Morning Buzz: Now Here’s A Coach Who Takes Responsibility

Now this is a coach who take responsibility for his sideline and doesn’t just hold a play sheet like Charles Nelson Riley.

I’d love to see Jason Eck destroy a juice box.

  • UCLA QB Ty Dieffenbach after the Wisconsin game:

“Growing up here, you want to go play for UCLA. You don’t want to play for USC, where I’m from.”

Dieffenbach went to Agoura High School. You know who else went there? Former USC linebacker Clay Matthews. And former USC offensive lineman Kevin Graf.

So I’m not sure everyone from Agoura wants to go to UCLA.

  • The official attendance at the UCLA-Wisconsin game was 36,045. This has caused consternation among some fans who thought the crowd looked bigger. It was also a disappointing number because Wisconsin brought a good crowd and because UCLA students are back in school.

  1. Well with Chesney at UCLA (headed to playoffs in year one) and Riley at SC, can’t blame kids for wanting to go to UCLA.

Besides WRs why go to SC? NIL money, I guess. If UCLA commits to NIL then watch out.

It hurts to realize UCLA will probably lock down socal recruiting like Pete did.

Meanwhile, Riley runs all over the country, ignoring his backyard, because he wants to maintain his national recruiting network for his next job.

I am dreading an era where UCLA owns LA college football. The consolation is that Chesney will likely be hired away fairly quickly.

  2. Both Wisconsin and UCLA are winnable teams for USC if they play disciplined. The stupid penalties like holding receivers and running into the QB destroy any momentum that USC may be getting, especially the third and long penalties that keep drives alive for inferior opponents. If UCLA keeps winning, they will get their share of good local high school players, but so will USC. It will all be about the coaching and right now Chesney is more charismatic than LR. Let’s see how the rest of the season plays out and who wins the actual showdown game. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Chesney has a weird negative, evil charisma — check out Lucifer in Milton’s “Paradise Lost” —–[eventually Lucifer is cast into Hell…and all his players have to with him]….

  3. I do think turnover belts are ok as it is dependent on making a play on the field for your team.

But juice boxes for no other reason than that they are just there? Dumb AF.

    1. Would love to see the Spirit of Troy march and stomp on those silly juice boxes while performing Tusk.

If Riley’s team slips back to being undisciplined, lacking toughness, “finesse” without finessing, and letting teams run and throw all over the Defense, those cringe-worthy juice boxes 🧃🧃are going to become the target of all the more ire and resentment of fans and alumni. Take that to the ATM.

PS: Diessenbacher should be able to share his personal observations without fear of reprisal from angry trOJies!! same thing WHERE I GREW UP, kid came around wearing an SC shirt, we sent him running home to momma with only the collar remaining around his neck!

    1. If only your Brui(sed)ns football teams had played with that much toughness and swagger over the years!

Seriously, not usually a fan of jawjacking, but when it’s done right (right way and/or right time and place) … I’m good with Diessenbacher talking some smack – your team should be fired up about what they’ve accomplished. But there is some season left to play … one thing to talk smack at midseason … but now we’ll see what is what and who is who … (just as a reminder, we already know who Charles Nelson Riley/Miley Wiley Coyote is … but how will the projected playoff seed hang around the neck and shoulders … we will now watch with great interest!) …

      1. Haha, agree the kid is feeling his oats, I might have told him cool it with the smack talk, but what the heck, I have to like that he is feeling confident!

      2. Absolutely … as saying goes, you only pass this way once … ought to enjoy it. Just hope the team finishes what they’ve started to a meaningful and fitting conclusion …

Also nice to see the “national” (SEC homer) press having to acknowledge UCLA and BYU …

and at least ponder whether 2 loss Alabama, Texas, Florida, LSU, Missouri should be ranked ahead of them (FFS! for the unread who have ever wondered about Alabama’s claimed cache of national championships … yeah, go check out those they list from the 1960s-70s … the Saban years were legit, and Bear Bryant was a great coach with some great players … but probably not a single title from the 60s-70s would have been won with even a 2 team playoff, let alone the currently expanding monstrosity).

      3. The Bear had plenty of good and sometimes even great teams … but always overrated and got a lot of special treatment from the press … the ’76 team was the only one in a string of 11 years I believe that didn’t play in one of the then 4 major bowls, but it was a good one (9-3) that from end of that season through an upset in Starkville in 1980 only lost twice.

  5. SC has to stop acting like they are an Ohio State, Georgia, or a Notre Dame because they are not. They haven’t been that for over a decade. This is why they are not a nationally respected program as reflected in the AP Polls. Just look at what UCLA is doing with a roster full of three stars, coaching matters. Stop waiving your white towels on the sideline, and concentrate on tackling and the next play, SC spends millions on their players, but it isn’t reflected in the games.

    1. Hey, no going Selma Blair on us! Unless it is going Mile High (but not in the Bronco way) with the “Legally Blonde” version of her or something like that!
