USC Morning Buzz: Some Post-Ohio State Victory Thoughts

This is the view of former USC wide receiver Brandon Carswell.

One thing that stuck in my head Saturday night was the USC fans who a week earlier were chiding Wisconsin fans for storming the field. They would say it was different beating the No. 2 team in the nation . . . with a true freshman QB making his first start.

  • Would John McKay, John Robinson or Pete Carroll put out a note to read after a USC game like Charles Nelson Riley?

Paul Hackett, Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian never did either. Did Riley write “Adios” as the last word of the letter or did he improvise that part?

  • How bad was the Big Ten officiating crew that went 0 for 3 on interception calls?
  • Ohio State is 6-4 in their past 10 games, much to their angry fan base’s chagrin.
  • OK, this is a 30-year reference, but as Ohio State slowly moved down the field and took nearly six minutes to score a touchdown, it reminded me of the 1995 USC-UCLA game.

USC trailed 24-14 and took nine minutes and eight seconds in 18 plays to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter. In another coincidence, USC then went for 2 points and didn’t make it.

I didn’t understand why Ohio State went for 2 on Saturday because when the play was unsuccessful it basically put the game away.

  • Former USC pitching star Randy Flores is the new general manager of the Houston Astros.

  1. Refereeing was indeed awful.

The NFL pays officials upwards of $350,000 per season. D1 NCAA pay is about $4000 per game.

Then there was the fumble-scoop TD for USC that wasn’t even reviewed…

      1. yes, all we can go with is the headline number.

Realistically, if he took an OC job, then perhaps it would be around $2.5 million in P4, maybe $4 million in NFL.

If an HC job in P4, then maybe $5 – $6? He can’t command top salaries any longer.

  2. Early odds for the SC-Indiana game have the Trojans as 10-point underdogs.

But that same publication has SC as 10 1/2 point favorites over ucla. Must be a misprint

    1. You’re replying to someone who was too cowardly to predict the OSU score, but stupid enough to knock people who predicted incorrectly.

So don’t worry about her having the balls to bet the farm.

  3. Scott’s reference to the 1995 UCLA game is spot on – I mentioned in an earlier comment that it reminded me of Sark/Kessler in the 2015 Stanford debacle being unable to execute a hurry-up as the game bled away. USC’s win in this game – and hopefully I’m wrong and all who are taking enjoyment in it can rub my nose in it later – struck me as being akin to the Larry Smith 1989 team’s blowout of Ohio State … after having blown a late 13-0 lead in the season opener at home against Illinois … and then going on to just miss at South Bend. Charles Nelson Miley Wiley reading written remarks and signing off with “adios” … can only hope there is a Terminator in the head shed to sign him off with an “hasta la vista, baby” in the near, very near, future.

  4. Scott, John McKay and Pete Carroll were given a pass their first year as head coach and then had very successful careers with no need for a mea culpa comment. John Robinson had one bad game, the Missouri game, his first game as head coach then he was very successful so no mea culpa. Kiffin and Sark were both young and did some stupid thinks. I agree that LR could use a publicity agent. All three missed calls were borderline so that is why they have the replays. Day is not used to playing from behind so clock management is not his thing, and he can be a jerk so the loss may help him become less of a jerk. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Both USC interceptions were spectacular, athletic plays. Stephens is 250 pounds but has the speed and agility of a safety. He seems to have found something since the Oregon game. Has played very well. Now, if we could eliminate the communication problems in the defensive backfield we would have a solid defense. Need to tackle better too. On some of the OSU run plays up the middle the RB dragged our players for 5 or more additional yards. That can’t happen.

      1. KAM: Stephens late hit penalty aided a Wisconsin touchdown drive to go up 17-7 in the 3rd quarter in the game a week ago.’

        DON: He hasn’t learned much.

    1. KAM: USC was favored by 27.5 points over UNLV in today’s women’s basketball game. A good warm up for the big nonconference tilt…

DON: The women’s basketball teams from the University of South Carolina and the University of Southern California will compete on November 15, 2026, at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. The game is part of a series called “The Real SC” and will start at 1:00 PM. South Carolina is ranked No. 1, and USC (Southern California) is No. 3 in the preseason AP women’s basketball poll for 2026–27.
