A Timeout For History

Today is the 74th anniversary of the death of Pvt. Tony Goux, who died at the Battle of the Bulge. He was the father of legendary USC assistant coach Marv Goux, who was only 12 when his father died.

Former USC football coach Don Clark (pictured below left with John McKay) also fought at the Battle of the Bulge before becoming USC coach from 1957-59.

  1. Don Clark had to take over a devastated team in’57 . They were so severely punished by the PCC , they left it to form a new conference. But Clark and the excellent staff ,incl Marv Goux had SC back in the top 10 in 1959.SC was the only team to beat the Big 10 in the 50’s.

      2. Pasadena has it right – Donahue didn’t even know the kid’s name and the poor fool was on the team for a fifth year mind you no class attendance. He did time for strangling the elitist kid who called him a racial name over a blown drug deal in Brentwood

  2. The memory we should all take from Wooden is what happened to Bartow mere months after St John The Divine ‘retired’. Bartow uncovered the depth of Gilbert’s control of the squad and when he confronted Gilbert – Gilbert threatened his life. Bartow knew viscerally this pig thug wasn’t joking. He went to the other half of bel-air tech’s dual thieving play JD Morgan, who then had to ‘intervene’.

Most telling was Jonnie saying later re. Gilbert “I have a clear conscience…” No, what you had was a yellow streak a mile wide up your backside and a sniveling 4th estate that bought into your corn pone ‘pyramid of the con’.

    1. Ruskie, you ignorant slot,
The fantasies you drool all over these digital pages is laughable.
The scars are obviously deep and wide on your psyche from getting rolled over for so many years by the best coach ever in his sport.
All Hail to your athletic & moral & intellectual superior, John Wooden.

    1. Silly Trojan!
Your athletic department is feces on fire and you mock the greatest coach ever in his sport?
I think mental health professionals call that deflection.
      Ask yours about it.
