Welcome To The Clay Helton Era

Wide receiver Bru McCoy is thinking of transferring. This follows the departure of Kliff Kingsbury. And tailback Jordan Wilmore decommitting. And cornerback Chris Steele decommitting.

USC is not being run properly. Many people get it. At least two (Lynn Swann, Clay Helton) do not get it. And don’t expect Swann to admit it any time soon. He doesn’t seem like the type of guy to admit he made a mistake.

If McCoy leaves, it would be devastating symbolically. But it might be better in the long run because it will continue to put pressure on Swann and Helton. That is all that matters.

McCoy was promised an Air Raid offense when he signed. Now what is he getting? Jedd “the” Fisch? Tim Drevno? Who wants that?

  1. It’s clearly disheartening to hear about all these decommits and transfers relative to the SC football program. It reminds me when I was an undergraduate and not successful with getting a date with the coed that a multitude of dudes wanted to go out with. In other words, “close but no cigar”.
Since Helton and/or Swann won’t provide any substantive communication about these stellar players heading out to other programs, then the only thing we could hope for is an “outgoing interview” with these departures. Who knows, they may spill their guts and add to the already poor image Helton and Swann possess. And if any interviews do transpire by available journalistic types not doing anything but hanging out at Starbucks, then they should contemplate having a chat with all of those fine Song Girls at SC to see what they might have to say. I’m almost certain that whatever is said may just piss off all of the powers at be at SC, and then they will try and shut down Scott’s blog…

  2. Everybody needs to stop worrying about transfers , and de commitments from these 4&5 star athletes, because Clay Helton can work his magic by stealing a few of Sacramento States , UC Davis, or Cal Lutheran recruits

  3. Blame this one on Kliff Kingsbury’s opportunism. If JT Daniels and Amon Ra cant convince Bru McCoy to stay then nothing will. Make is better for WR Ford.

  4. I personally am growing very fond of the “Lynn and Clay Show.” Like any other show it has it’s ups and downs (although, unlike any other show, the downs outnumber the ups by a ratio of 400 to 1). My favorite sustained low is their “no comment” policy. It shows enormous respect for the fans and the players —while at the same time, enhancing their own public images.

  5. I can hear the boos raining down from the Coliseum faithful as Clay Helton runs out onto the field against Fresno St. SC football is/ can be the best show in town when run properly. I feel bad, but even worse for the players who are putting in the work.

    1. Those boos could turn to cheers, Arturo, if Swann does what he explicitly promised after last season’s debacle and begins a “Notre Dame-type transformation” of the USC coaching staff. I really wouldn’t want to be Swann or Helton, however, if that transformation fails to materialize —if they think things are getting hot for them now, just imagine the temperature if they lose to Fresno State —at home— in their opener.

      1. I hope they ( boos to cheers) do, MG. A lot of what football is at the collegiate level happens between the ears- motivation, having an edge or chip on your shoulder, focus, mental toughness etc. Helton led teams haven’t displayed these traits often and consistently enough.

From a fan’s perspective (mine) keeping the best local talent and then seeing them go out and stomp opponents is very gratifying. The opposite is true when that local talent leaves and flourishes at other programs. I hope McCoy stays; he seemed to take great pride when Mater Dei beat IMG Academy and then proclaimed CA as the ultimate winner in the CaliFlorida rivalry. As a native I carry that same pride.
