USC Morning Buzz: No Way To Generate Excitement

Among the many transgressions of Clay Helton, there has to be some comment on how he has pretty much destroyed the Trojan Huddle, which was the name of the spring scrimmage at the Coliseum.

It’s now the Spring Showcase and the crowd at Cromwell Field was far from a sellout in a track stadium that seats 3,000. The fans are smart enough to know it’s no longer a scrimmage and a glorified practice. It’s so bad that two plays (a 55-yard TD by Markese Stepp, an interception by Drake Jackson) were literally the only thing fans/media could talk about.

Then Helton doesn’t even let the players speak to the media afterward, where maybe Stepp/Jackson could relay to fans their excitement over making big plays in the fake scrimmage.

After this week, you will start seeing some amazing crowd counts at places like Tennessee, Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State, etc. And USC will be able to say what? It had about 2,000 at its game, which was free to the public.

USC gives up on the fan in so many ways these days and the spring scrimmage is just one more.

      1. Nice….I’m not Catholic, but I admire their sports and socials…some of my neighbors, growing up, went to Damien…I enjoyed the St. Louise carnival on Covina Blvd.

      2. I once had a peace of the “body of Jesus” It was kinda dry! Maybe you Catholics could improve the taste by offering some hummus or nutella or something? Then you would get more people in the door for bingo!!

  1. Some terrible news.. according to sources, Andy Enfield is rumored to be the next Cincinnati Bearcats head coach. There is some hope at southern Cal.

      1. Prayer is more than just desserts. To edify the body, I am sent unto you to encourage, and, yes, oppose, while indulging my favorite cake, USC….be well, but you must pray to move mountains ⛰.

      2. You may find it here: Mark 11:23 For assuredly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, Be removed and be cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart ❤️, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

      3. It’s the long game Trojan nation, the testing of your faith….difficult, like Gethsemane….I wish it were easy USC, but it’s not.

      1. MG, yes, it is sad. My youngest loved going to the annual scrimmage. Last season, he couldn’t bear to watch the games. He still says “Trojans need another Darnold.”

  2. MG, what we are asking of Helton is what Swann is already doing – collecting a paycheck for not showing up to work.

  3. We are forgetting something here. First this “tradition” has changed many times over my life including a spring game with pro-former Trojan players coming back to the school. Helton inherited the current form from the sanction mentality era.
Second the Coliseum is being reconstructed right now, so they made do with Cromwell field. It’s not Helton’s tradition.
Clay Helton has a lot of things you blame on him, but the “Trojan huddle” was not his fault.
