Another Parent Pleads Guilty In Admissions Scandal

Toby MacFarlane, who was famous for getting his 5-foot-5 son into USC as a 6-1 basketball recruit, plead guilty in federal court today. MacFarlane paid $450,000 for his son and his daughter, who was supposed to be a top-flight soccer player.

Prosecutors recommended he serve 15 months in prison with one year of supervised release and pay a fine of $95,000.

MacFarlane told the judge he committed fraud “by getting my children admission to USC as recruited athletes when in fact they’re not.”

  1. The fine he pays will barely cover the cost of his jail time, as California prison costs are about 40 percent higher than the rest of the country.

Whose interest is served by sending this guy to prison, rather than having him pay a much larger fine? Is this just to send a message to future “pay-for-admission” parents?
