Sunday Notes: Larry Scott Is Wrong Messenger

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott makes more than $5.3 million per year but doesn’t want athletes getting paid.

“We are very clearly opposed to any pay for play situation,” Scott said.

You can be for-or-against college athletes getting paid, but Scott is the wrong messenger on this issue. And a host of other issues.

  • Rumor of the day: Five-star tailback Bijan Robinson is still considering USC even though he supposedly is down to Texas and Ohio State.
  • James Smith, a three-star cornerback from St. John Bosco, committed to Washington. One of the Husky coaches that recruited Smith was Will Harris, a former USC safety.
  • John Papadakis, a member of the 1969 USC team, plans to boycott the Coliseum reunion on Aug. 17.

    3. Larry Scott will be the keynote speaker in Vegas at the “How To Piss Away A Decade” conference.

      He’ll also lead the special session highlighting “Advanced Methodology – Identify, Get Hired By, Then Flummox Any Nadless CEO Leadership Group”.

    Until now, USC football has never scheduled an FCS opponent for a regular season game.  It was among only three remaining teams carrying on this tradition, along with two of USC’s most storied rivals: UCLA and Notre Dame.  To surrender the equivalent of the “moral high ground” to these conspicuous remaining teams in such a high profile sport is unconscionable with the heritage and tradition of USC football.

    It seems a strategic error has been made by the USC Athletic Department in scheduling UC Davis, which would be its first FCS opponent in history, in 2021 for a regular season game.  The apparent reasons were that no other FBS teams were available or willing to play a game on that open September 4, 2021 date.  So instead of adhering to an admirable legacy and leaving the date open while continuing to solicit other FBS schools, USC Athletics went to the FCS, breaking with a sacred adherence embedded in the fabric of USC history.  This decision runs considerable and unwarranted risk among USC Alumni, the USC Community, and all those who know and love USC Football, of drastically and permanently affecting their view of the USC Football Program and of the University in general.

    We urge in the strongest possible terms that the USC Athletic Department reconsider this decision to schedule USC Football against FCS UC Davis in 2021, and leave the date open playing an 11-game regular season if an FBS opponent cannot be scheduled for that date.  It is simply the right thing to do.

    Max Nikias, Pat Haden, Lynn Swann, Steve Lopes and Clay Helton are exceeding expectations in their quest to De-Emphasize Trojan football.

    Trojan boosters, alumni and fans sit idly by watching the Trojan trainwreck transform into a full blown dumpster fire.

  5. Larry Scott isn’t the best commissioner, but he’s not in charge of hiring the PAC 12 athletic directors either. It’s up to the University’s to put a better product on the field, not Scott . USC is the conference’s signature school, and if they have low standards for their athletic programs, then other schools will follow the lead.
