Morning Buzz: Clay Helton Rolls Dice And It Might Backfire

Imagine the punch in the stomach it must have been for Jack Sears and Matt Fink on Tuesday to find out they could not even beat out true freshman Kedon Slovis.

I’ve heard Helton wanted to make Slovis No. 2 for two weeks but I’m not sure how it helps the team. Did he win the back-up job by going 7 for 17 in the first Coliseum scrimmage with an interception? He performed better in the second scrimmage but his several deep passes were underthrown.

It doesn’t matter because Helton wanted him to be the back up.

Why do I say I’m not sure it helps the team? Because in the first half of the season, there is a pretty good chance JT Daniels will beg out of a game for whatever reason. At that point, and against many of those teams, why would you insert a true freshman who threw at least six more interceptions in training camp than Sears?

Sam Darnold threw no interceptions in his true freshman training camp and that was without a spring like Slovis.

Helton could have had No. 2 in his head and started giving him mop-up in games later in the season. But the players want to win games and if Daniels goes down, they want Sears (or Fink).

Graham Harrell told the quarterbacks and media that leadership was a big factor in picking a starter. How much could a true freshman really show in 30 practices?

The truth is the coaches talk out of their backside and then choose whoever they want. Helton sent a message to Sears and Fink on Tuesday that they have no future at USC.

If he believes that, no problem. But it doesn’t help the team. And he might pay the price if his golden child gets hurt early in the season.

Remember, Helton is the quarterback guru who picked Max Browne over Darnold and said Daniels was the best quarterback he ever saw in high school.

  1. Sears will get his degree and then he can go play for a real coach for 2 years and probably have a better career than JT Chuck and Duck will ever have

  2. So one of those lousy 3* commits comes in and shakes up wolf’s plan for the fall…..

    Hahahahaha!

Sears was behind Fink last year too, why is anyone surprised?

    1. Pudly —Why is anyone surprised? (1) Cuz they’ve forgotten that Helton has always made it clear he’s not impressed with Sears’ knowledge of the playbook, (2) they’ve forgotten that Sears only got his brief chance last season cuz Daniels and, them Fink got hurt, (3) they’ve also forgotten that he didn’t win the game he played (against a mediocre opponent), (4) they’re ignoring the fact that Harrell doesn’t want a QB who gives up on plays early and takes off and (5) they’ve been cleverly set up by an entire year’s worth of Scott’s intriguing propaganda.
We don’t have a superstar quarterback. Daniels brings every bit as much to the table as Sears —and he has more game experience. Let’s get behind him and let’s go.

      1. This should make everyone here happy. If they’re all so smart and who would ever doubt scottie and his minions, then Helton will be walking before long.
I’d expect sears to leave (the team) soon, to keep an extra year’s eligibility…but who knows?
        Certainly not the minions! Hahahahaha.

Who is surprised? It’s the same idiot head coach that doesn’t know his head from his ass who still can’t evaluate QB talent or any other position on the gridiron for that matter.

Hey Dumb Ass Pudwacker, your boy J.T. Daniels went 1 – 5 in his last 6 games…he stunk. And your Daddy Clay Helton is going to go with Daniels to start the season and that means your Daddy just sealed his fate because they’re both going to suck again and your Daddy’s coaching career will be over.

  3. Only Gomer Bozo would have a true freshman learning a new system as his backup as opposed to 2 guys who have actually played in games.

Fink was a team player and stayed, good for him but not a wise decision if he really wanted to play but I can’t see Sears staying and being behind Chuck and Duck, Slovis and the new MD over hyped midget unless USC actually hires a top coach who will bench Chuck and Duck and his daddy and actually have a QB competition.

    1. Yeah, what a dumbass, just like dabo who named a freshman backup last year, who then took over as starter not too much later. Or perhaps little nicky saban who chose Tua Tagaviola as backup the previous year before inserting him during the championship game to bring his team from behind.Your take is as weak as your football x’s and o’s knowledge.

      Hahahahaha

      1. Slovis could very well start a game this year. And I think he’ll do fine —but I hope we can get him a little playing time before that happens (I just don’t see where that opportunity arises, though, given this year’s schedule).

      6. The following is an excerpt from a recent phone conversation between Helton and Pudly…

Helton: “I had to name Daniels the starter because I made a deal with his father.”

        Pudly: “You’re right, Clay.”

Helton: “I’m going to bury Sears on the depth chart so he never sees the field.”

        Pudly: “You’re right, Clay.”

Helton: “ I’m stressed, I need to release some energy.”

Puddly: “I’m too sore tonight, Clay.”

    2. karma — Partially true stuff —but remember Harrell said all along that he felt Slovis was in the best position to take over at QB cuz (and I quote) “he didn’t have to unlearn as much as the other QB’s.” That is a damning assessment of Helton from a very good quarterback coach (and very successful college QB). Harrell has made no bones about complaining about the footwork of all the quarterbacks other than Slovis —and by footwork I’m referring to how they use their feet on passing plays, not how fast they can run when they screw the play up. I think Harrell sees Slovis as his best bet but wasn’t able to swing a starting position for him.

      1. With the shitty OL Slovis might be in against Fresno State, then Fink will get his shot after they break Slovis, hell, Sears might be playing by week 3 with this OL

  4. Helton didn’t list Sears as the backup because he knew if he did that the team wouldn’t give an all out effort. The Trojan players want Sears as the starter and Helton had to take him completely out of the equation in order to force team effort under Daniels.

Eventually the players are going to get fed up with J.T. Daniels and I can already see the ‘ole blocks coming. Daniels won’t last 3 games.

      1. Gomer Bozo would never allow it if it did happen, just like the sack that became a TD for Chuck and Duck

      1. So you’re saying their going to turn it up to 11 (because it’s louder!) like “Spinal Tap”? – think getting a spinal tap might be more promising than…

        (2) That logic always made sense to me (why would they have an 11 if it weren’t louder than 10)?

      3. Hearkening back to one of your earlier comments from today – saw the Wolf just put up yet another podcast anchored on this same theme…given how we have all taken the bait thus far…so Wolf is sort of like the evil alien in the original Star Trek series (in a variety of forms – “Day of the Dove” or “Wolf In The Fold”…hey that last…one of its guises was Jack the Ripper, so…) that feeds off of negativity and hate…and he is eating well today…

      4. James –Conservatively speaking, I think Scott can milk this QB thing for at least another week (and that gets him to the opener and dozens more hits every day). Life is good.
As for all of us playing right into Scott’s hands —if I might rely on another film quote (this one from Johnny Eager): “If you’ve been a sucker half the way, you might as well be a sucker all the way.”

  5. Maybe Helton/Harrell thought Slovis more “coachable” than Fink or Sears. Maybe they thought Slovis was quicker at making pre-snap/play reads and adjustments.

    1. Harrell has been consistently high on Slovis from the first spring practice. He’s fairly appalled [and has SAID so] at the poor mechanics (from a footwork point of view) of everybody who came up under Helton’s baby brother or his assistant, Ellis. I think J. T. will be able to cut it….but, if not, Harrell will be happy to go with Slovis.

      1. What is remarkable that other people missed was that there was no use of the “OR” to rank the QB’s. After J.T. there was no “Matt Fink OR Jack Sears OR Kedon Slovis.”

It was a bold statement to say one guy was #2, another #3 and the other guy #4. No hedging of bets here as we had seen in prior years with the depth chart.

This was either the influence of Harrell or some other back stage drama we don’t know about.

  7. J.T. Daniels lost 4 of his last 5 starts. The only win was against a (2-10) Oregon State team. Even then he only had 1 TD against them.

    1. His last 5 games he had 7 Td’s 5 Int’s

    2. Against the top 4 teams he played against in 2018
    (Texas, Stanford, Utah, ND) 2 TD’s 5 Int’s

    3. Lost to Cal at Home for the first time in ? Threw a pick late in that game that sealed the deal.
    4. Lost to both Rivals UCLA and ND

JT Daniels own words he said last years offense was not the issue it was poor execution. So I’ll take him at his word and agree with him.

  8. Bryce Young has to be crazy to stay committed to the SUCCX FB program mess.

Young will have to sit behind JT and Slovis for at least 3 years assuming the bozos didn’t recruit a better future QB or there is a change of HFBC/direction.

The 2019 bozos remind me of the rambunctious early ’70s Oakland A’s, but w/o their championship results.

    1. …the ’70s A’s after Dick Williams and the stars left/were liquidated (they still won under Alvin Dark, but the players were disdainful of him)…
