What Adjustments Will USC Make Vs. Notre Dame?

I know Notre Dame will make adjustments Saturday vs. USC.

Remember last season? USC came out with its quick-pass offense and JT Daniels passed for 244 yards in the first half.

Daniels passed for 105 yards in the second half after Notre Dame adjusted to an offense it had not seen on film before the game. And USC failed to score in the second half until the final minute of the game.

But here’s my point? What adjustments will Clancy Pendergast make Saturday?

I can’t really think of a game during Pendergast’s four-plus seasons where he made an adjustment. When you play a real team in South Bend, that matters more.

USC plays man-to-man defense with a little bit of zone coverage. It’s pretty much always that way.

Remember how the defense was supposed to be simpler this season? Have you noticed a difference?

  1. Coach Helton already said (twice) that USC will not practice it’s victory formation under center cuz it would be too complicated and only confuse our players. Does that answer your question, Scott? [When Brock Huard suggested that Clancy toy with the idea of playing zone on one side of the field and man defense on the other in order to maximize our talents on defense —-I just had to smile to myself and say, “that’ll be the day”]……

  2. Clancy Pendergast doesn’t make adjustments, he relies on individual talents, not schemes. He’s more of a NFL linebackers coach then a DC, but Bozo Helton thinks he’s a national championship type of defensive coordinator. 😂😂. And I could careless what Pendergast did in the NFL, he’s basically a $800,000 dollar a year money grab at this level

  3. I’m not so sure ND will make many “measurable” adjustments at all on Saturday. So far, USC’s offensive and defensive script has remained the same in every game (for the whole game) under CH. Adjustments by our opponents, if any, are generally pretty minor (if not downright undetectable) because there is never anything new, creative, or innovative on either side of the ball. God forbid USC ever makes an adjustment to our opponents game plan.

  4. The only adjustment Clancy makes during halftime is to his underdrawers after passing the pregame bran muffin. Otherwise he really has no answer for what the other team is doing. His halftime talk is “keep your eye on the ball- that’s where you tackle – where the ball is. If the ball isn’t there find the ball and tackle that ball!” Then Helton yells group hug and the team huddles in. That’s the adjustment in the eyes of the defense.
