USC Morning Buzz: Mike Bohn Didn’t Acknowledge Victory*

Does it matter that USC athletic director Mike Bohn has not mentioned the victory over Arizona State on twitter but retweeted the women’s volleyball winning last night twice?

Maybe Bohn doesn’t want to get killed on twitter for saying something positive about the Arizona State game. Or maybe he is just happy volleyball beat Colorado, where he was fired.

UPDATED: Since I wrote this, it looks like Bohn went back and retweeted football winning. Guess he got the message.

  • USC had 11 penalties for 93 yards. Remember when Clay Helton said in the spring USC had one penalty in 200 plays for one week?

I’m pretty sure I was the only one to pour water on Helton trying to make a big deal out of that stat. And now here we are with USC committing penalty after penalty, which is Helton’s job to prevent.

  • Where is Yogi Roth to tell everyone USC beat Arizona State on the road with Kedon Slovis forced to leave the game and the fans should appreciate it?

    1. Next USC Football Coach? That’s an easy one: Tyson Helton —- to whom Clay DEDICATED a portion of his post game press conference…

    2. Hiring Urban is a joke. He qill be here for a few ??? Then he’ll get the program in into trouble. Then he’ll leave for personal reasons. He reminds me of Petrino of Louisville.

Dont care for him as a coach, analysr or whatever.

  1. I get —and share —everybody’s disgust with the coaching ineptitude (especially Baxter’s —which is so bad that it really requires a new word to describe it) but maybe we should all take a deep breath and remember that, while USC had a really tough contest last week, Arizona State had a bye and had been pointing to and game planning for the USC game for 2 weeks (meaning that Yellen had 2 weeks to prepare for his start).
On the other hand, if USC can’t end the false starts and illegal shifts next Saturday, the better coach —rather than the better team —will win.

      1. 67 —Either the conference is WAY better than you and me (and practically everyone else on earth) think it is or Clay is really awful….
I watched the Cal game and here’s what I saw —the Cal players were jumping up and down with energy and excitement every time they huddled around Wilcox for a timeout. Contrast that with Helton and the USC team —they all look tense, scared and like they’re suffering stomach flu…..

      2. gt —In our case, you really have to wonder about the # of injuries. Is it possible that by letting the players off easy in practice Helton is getting them hurt (in droves) in games?

    1. If ASU had a bye week before USC and knew that this was a big game then it’s a bit of a shock that they let USC jump out of the gate early and score 28 in the 1st quarter.

I think the better way to look at this game is Helton had a good game plan to start the game. But once the game got rolling Helton’s ineptitude at making adjustments and Herm Edwards’ experience helped even up the game as it went on.

      1. The long bomb interception when SC was up 28-7 and rolling in the second quarter really took the air out of our sails.

  2. Bohn not acknowledging yesterday’s football game is the best news in a long time.

Even if the team finishes 8-4, which I hope they do for the players’ sake, Helton is gone. I doubt there is anyone inside college football who believes Helton should be the HC of a program that has traditionally been top 10.

    1. 67′ – Mike – Rialto – Parkway – Budda – James – Pudly – and all the rest we all are in unison wanting to see this clown gone. Let’s hope a mere 2 weeks from tomorrow that is a reality.

Point being made right now on Harvey Hyde’s Show as to what the turnout will be two weeks from yesterday at the Rose Bowl against the Bruins. Hyde believes the USC fans will turn out. Wonder if that’s true should Cal defeat USC next Saturday?

  3. When USC was up 28-7 yesterday, did anyone feel like the game was over ?

28 points in the 1st quarter and 3 points for the rest of the game ?? Talk about shitting the bed. ASU FINALLY made adjustments and Gomer and Opie didn’t, what a surprise

Same old crap with stupid penalties. How hard is it to remember the snap count ?

Kickoff’s are a mess, apparently they don’t practice this much ? Can’t kick deep and cover, can’t squib kick without it going out of bounds, a pooch kick is a no no apparently not to mention the continuous stupidity of not having 11 men on the field for extra points.

How does the QB cramp up so bad he can’t walk ? It’s not humid in Tempe, it wasn’t that hot, so was the plan to not hydrate days before the game ? Nice hydration plan by the S&C coach.

One poster had it right yesterday, this team is 3 plays away from having 3 more losses. Gomer is so lucky, but when he plays a team with equal or better talent he gets smoked.

And another team with a QB who has never played a down of D1 football taking a game that should have been a walk over down to the final drive, had their TE not dropped the ball or their PK made an extra point, ASU might have tied or won the game, how do you have a 28-7 1st quarter lead and not put the other team away ?

Gomer got his team bowl eligible yesterday, can’t see him being let go so not to coach the bowl game, 2020 recruiting got a lot harder

  4. SC had to win that game, and they did. Now for the final weeks of Pac-12 football:

Utah has to lose one, and it would be a monstrous upset to lose to sucla, at arizona or colorado. But stranger things have happened.

sucla suddenly has momentum and incentive to win the South by beating Utah, and then SC. I wouldn’t want to play them. (Oh, we do)

So in a best case scenario, SC wins out, the Utes lose one, and SC gets to play Oregon again, this time for the Rose Bowl. As our Offensive Center said, “Oregon is not 32-points better than we are.” I say they are about a 10-point favorite if that game materializes, and I like Troy’s chances.

    1. John —You factored everything into your analysis of a USC/Oregon rematch …except Pac 12 refereeing. I’ve found you can’t bet Pac 12 games anymore— the refs miss so many obvious calls AND and make so many dubious calls that the results are totally unpredictable. If you watch other conferences you’ll see a completely different level of officiating —no missed interference calls, no bogus roughing the passer calls, no sideline warnings for cheering the team. Larry Scott must be consciously pushing for the screwiest refs he can get.

  5. Helton will brag that he should be retained because he beat Arizona State, a subpar team, which he almost lost . We are so starved for team wins that some are willing to forgive subpar coaching and retain this joker, who said after the game: Glory To God, what does that mean? He is the biggest phony I have ever seen. We were in a survival mode against a poor team. Please, just get rid of him and move on.

  6. When Swan got fired, It was clear, Helton would be next. There is no way that SC can afford to have Helton at the helm for next year. I expect that Helton will be fired the day after the last game of the regular season. Although, I believe like others, he should be terminated immediately.

  7. The Brain Trusts at SC. May fool us yet again, suggesting Helton needs another year to put in his plan. Don’t surprised by anything this administration does regarding the Football program…they are starting to mimic the officiating we have in the conference. I’ve lost all hope of they being fundamentally sound regarding Athletics.

  8. This penalty thing started some years ago when Stanford got the idea to intentionally provoke SC football players to get them thrown out of games. It worked! The refs always sided with the non-SC teams. Plus, SC has this image of a pansy, prima donna team from LALA land. And there are so many players on opposing teams from the LA area, that the opposing players all want to get revenge for not being picked by SC. So SC ends up like the fictional character Gulliver in Tom Swift’s story about Gulliver’s Travels (a giant who is tied up and held hostage on a remote island by people the size of ants). The refs are being prepped to conduct “social justice” and penalize SC to keep opponents in the games for higher TV ratings. So there isn’t any coaching that can stop this. The league and the refs have to stop the social definition of the situation that SC is there to provoke and beat up on. The players know this and fight back (good for them!). The dufus Clay Helton blames his players lack of discipline for what happens on the field. But there is another layer of meaning to the penalties. Truth comes in layers. Superficially looking at the number of penalties per game does not do “justice” to the reality at hand. The players know what is going on.
