USC Morning Buzz: What About Those Staff Changes?

Is USC going to wait until after the Holiday Bowl to make staff changes?

First off, who cares about the Holiday Bowl?

Second, is USC is going to wait while other schools do their business? If Mike Bohn is actually going to force Clay Helton to fire Clancy Pendergast and/or John Baxter, why wait?

It makes Bone look even weaker after being told by Carol Folt to keep Helton. It also allows some really frustrated fans to speculate Bohn might not even force any staff changes.

This is what happens when you make an incredibly incompetent decision. It leaves you open to questioning on everything else.

  1. At this point I say let it burn, let it burn all the way down. I feel somewhat bad for the players. On the otherhand, why would any top recruit have chosen to go to USC in the last 10 years or so. In that sense, I feel about as bad for the players as I do a motorist on the side of the road with a broken down Jaguar. Sure, sucks to be stranded; but there’s always a price to pay for failing to do due diligence.

  2. Guess who would be all over Bohn and Helton if USC went into a bowl game without a defensive coordinator and/or special teams coach (such as he is) …and the Trojans lost big time? There’s time to do what needs to be done after the football season (college and pro) ends.

    1. I think Wolf is actually a little nervous. His career is built on covering SC Football. Though he’s mostly critical (legitimately so in most cases); he needs SC Football to be relevant, or else he needs to create a whole new platform. I sense more than his usual snarkiness in his recent posts and tweets. I sense real concern that SC might be booking itself a one-way ticket to irrelevancy; which would have ramifications on him (and he knows it).

      3. Scotty is already pretty irrelevant at this point as the Daily News let him go years ago. Doubt he makes much from this blog and his severance and unemployment has to have run out by now.

    2. Yeah, MG, early signing period for recruits is not gonna be pretty, but maybe a few nice recruits for the Feb signing? Predictions are that Austin Jackson will depart after this Junior season. Bummer. I think Tufele is also at risk for departing. Vaughs? Selfish me wants ’em all to stay, but if they depart, a few spots open up.

      The silly season gets even sillier after New Years as the NFL and CFB close down. Some good DC help will be available. If HC CH was savvy, he’d already have spoken to some “likely suspects.” He has a degree in Math–he “ain’t” dumb. He knows his future at the top 5-7 job in America depends on hiring a top DC.

      4. Schools get 5 NFL evaluations for rsSoph/Jr athletes, and Vaughns was one of ours. I suspect Austin Jackson might get one, as might Tufele.
        I would guess that we’ll get a tweet the evening after the Holiday Bowl.

Clancy is staying if we win and we will because Iowa has problems scoring.baxter will be switched to another title.these are facts if there was going to be changes don’t you think Chris Claiborne would have been hired already he has not because Clancy wants his own guys.this is the facts usc will not change as long we have the COUNTRY CLUB BOYS and there family members working at heritage hall together and usc. Do your research people you will be surprised of what you find out in Pandora’s box of secrets going on over there. Stay true and beloved players and certain coaches on our staff.As long as helton. Keeps Clancy.baxter.drevino things will never change.

  4. If USC is concerned about money, then why would Mike Bohn encourage Clay Helton to hire new coordinators, who will require multi year contracts, while knowing Helton is a dead man walking? No qualified coach is going to uproot their family under theses circumstances, it doesn’t make any sense.

  5. USC football is already irrelevant. The dumpster is on fire, and USC thinks it’s still accepting trash. Until enlightenment or a reckoning hits Foltbohn, this won’t change. I’m not holding my breath…

    1. Don’t be too sure, marvienna — Nathan Stanley is MADE for Pendergast. He can’t run (at all) and he’s NEVER finished a season with a 60% completion rate. [And Iowa’s running backs and receivers are among the worst in the Big 10)……

    2. I don’t think it matters. I believe the dye has been cast. JMO. And the real coaching carousel doesn’t even start till the end of the pro season and has a resurgence once the playoffs (pro) are completed. Or doesn’t anyone remember KK? Hahahahaha

In fact, I think the way it goes now for USC is something like this—- they look far and wide for a head coach, come up empty and issue press release saying, “We are pleased to announce that Clay Helton is returning.” Presently they are trying to make deals for a new d-coordinator and special teams coach …but they already have the press releases ready to go: “We are pleased to announce that coaches Pendergast and Baxter are returning to make 2020 the bestest season ever!”

  8. LA Times reporter Ryan Kartje reports Prendergast and Baxter are there until 2 weeks from tomorrow – after the Holiday Bowl. After that – doubt either are there. Also, Harrell seems to be leaning on staying after bid bump in salary.

    Daily News Adam Grosbard reports a national recruiting site states bluntly USC flat out has no recruiter.

    One more tidbit Prendergast and Baxter are ion discussions with Kelly at bel-air tech.

    2. Did you read the piece he did in yesterday’s register? He had 24/7’s top national analyst quoted as saying that people will be surprised by the time recruiting is finished. Oh, and along those lines, SC had an in home visit with the top linebacker in the country this week and he’s on campus for his official visit this weekend after leaving us off his top 4. Curious to see how this all washes out.

      2. Not saying that either. But this class will be smaller than most, so that will effect the overall rating. Nonetheless, the insecurity surrounding the coaching position had many afraid to even visit. Let’s just see if we still draw some talent.

      3. Pud today’s OC Register – SCNG – Daily Breeze flat out contradicted that again because they don’t have a recruiter to make that prediction in yesterday’s paper true.

      4. I wasn’t trying to contradict you Alv, only pointing out the clickbait that even drives sporting news these days. Greg Biggins was the one making that prediction yesterday. Can’t seem to recall anyone at SNG, etc who have a better feel for it.

      5. Actually….Mister Maturity…. you’re right. What matters is that we get some quality people to back up our starters on both sides of the line —if we do that, we’ll be good to go next year… and if we have a great year, the rest will take care of itself…..

All these comments but these are the facts when they met with flowe and his family on Thursday it was all the defensive coaching staff.if Claiborne was to be added as a coach they would have told flowe and nothing was mentioned to him or other defensive lb recruits.watch out for Arizona St they are already putting out attention to adding Claiborne to staff after he graduates.nothing will change iowa offense is garbage they hardly score points and there special teams suck.this is the main factor right here no top defensive coordinator will come to usc knowing heltons situation unless usc ponys up lots of money you can say that for any top asst.there is no way folt would agree on that.. come on guys they pay for her monthly rent for her mansion in San Marino over $800 thousand per month till her house is done with construction.i wish and pray they bring back the gold ol usc factory it once was but this is the realization of it boys.
