I thought it was interesting to see Clemson coach Dabo Swinney does not allow committed players to visit other schools. Swinney can do whatever he wants because he has built Clemson into a powerhouse and few will question it.
Pete Carroll used to take the opposite approach. He encouraged recruits to take other visits. They are both considered great coaches so you can defend both policies.
Swinney is definitely more rigid. Here is what he said two weeks ago about the college football season starting in August.
“I don’t have any doubt. I have zero doubt that we’re going to be playing and the stands are going to be packed,” Swinney said.
- Colorado basketball coach Tad Boyle declined a $105,000 bonus for making the NCAA Tournament and asked that it be returned to aid the athletic dept.
You gotta admire Pete for adhering to the principle of competition, even as it applied to himself and his ability to recruit for the Trojans. Personally, I like that. It increases the likelihood that the kids who come are committed.

John Robinson used to encourage recruits to take all recruiting trips anyways even when still committed to USC. He didn’t care and just wanted players to experience the whole dog and pony show of recruiting.

Hey Blogger, Get back to posts about the history of USC football and notable games!
Those posts are rather enjoyable and they jog my memory to remember games that I may not have fully remembered the first time around.

I’m amazed at all of the accolades that the Wolfman is constantly throwing at Pete Carroll now-a-days. I don’t remember him being a fan of Petes back when Carroll was coaching here. I remember him using a lot of terms like “Caesar” and other terms of derision. Maybe my memory is failing me but, as I remember it, he bagged on Pete just like he has bagged on every other coach that SC has had. Where did this new Pete-worship come from?

Jim, absolutely right about Scottie now making nice with Pete. Perhaps this is a case of “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”?

What Dabo’s policy says to me is, he is insecure. Clemson is in a very very remote spot. It is 17,000 acres and was given to the state for a school by a plantation owner. There are some other very interesting facts about the university. However, the key is, it has zero campus feel. Pete was at a major university with tradition and a history second to none. He also welcomed competition. That tells me a lot about the differences in the two men.

You hit the nail on the head. A long time ago I was with a friend listening to a guy give her a presentation. My friend & I get up to go & as we were leaving, the salesman says-‘deal’s off if you leave’.
My friend turns around & says-‘you must be afraid I’ll find a better deal’.
Dabo tries to intimidate. Works on some 18yr olds. They should always keep their options open with plan B.

Problem is, Dabo is the “real deal.”
Walk-on who earned a scholarship.
Interim coach who earned the FT job…and then won Natty’s.
He is “authentic.” This generation values “authenticity.”
Helton? Authentic?
Dabo has earned his prestige.

That Clemson is in the middle of nowhere has worked in Dabo’s favor; he has sold the university experience and that experience being a once in a lifetime endeavor. I’m so fed up with Alabama winning and being the center of the college football world, that I don’t really mind Clemson becoming the powerhouse that it has become. For now.

Obama was and is a fool. he took this country down a road where only a capalist and business man like President Trump can get the country back on the right track. Then you have Hillary, Pelosi, Feinstein, Shumer, and the rest of the corrupt gang of thieves. Then add to the circus, you have Bernie, Biden, and Cortez, the three stooges. Sorry Moe, Larry, and Curly.

Years ago, after having just driven 350 miles on two lane roads to get to Boulder so that I might take college son out to a dinner of his choice, I end up at this new place called
“Chipotle.” Mind you, Boulder is full of trendy. cuisine, and my son picks Chipotle (before Chipotle was cool).
Anyway, my wife and I had been to many Buff games that year with “the new coach,” and the Buffs were looking downright “sporty.” Given the Buffs penchant for football doldrums, it was nice to see their MBB team on a tear. I immediately noticed the tall fellow in basic Buffs gear right in line in front of me as Coach T. Boyle. My wife and I struck up a conversation while waiting in line, and the Coach was beyond gracious chatting with us for a good 10 minutes (Chipotle was not quite as fast back in those days).
As you might expect, none of the other Boulderites nor students gave one whit that Coach was “in the house.”
He’s a class act, and a credit to coaching. I’ll root for him every day but two.
(This was before “the merger” incorporating CU into the Pac 10.)
