Sunday Buzz: Did USC Establish A New Culture?

I spoke to a USC player on Saturday morning (before the bowl opt out) who said that in the locker room after the loss to Oregon, Clay Helton said, “We started a (new) culture here” and “We are on road for national championship.”

Do I even want to comment?

The culture has not changed. That’s the whole point. Look at the penalties. The way USC came out flat in a Pac-12 title game. The lack of discipline.

Some people think I am nitpicking when I talk about the players can’t even follow the rules by wearing the same color socks or gloves. It all relates to discipline. This program has very little.

  1. True. What is even more disappointing is the chance to differentiate from ucla by actually going to a bowl. The USC I knew would never have passed up a chance to go bowling. What was that letter this team wrote to governor whoseewhatsits about “wanting to play” this season? Seems character is also missing from the same list as discipline…

    1. they would rather spend their time in their crying room with helton all the other snow flakes the school systems and coaches like SC crank out and foist on the public…real athletes/players would have protested

  2. It is an insult to keep telling us “culture has changed” “we are on the road to a national championship”, yada, yada, every year, year in and year out. Stop lying to fans. Don’t pretend that Helton is going to get anywhere near a natty. We know who he is. Fire him.

  3. I just watched a video Helton made of himself starting his day by “giving glory to God.” It was the umpteenth video that Helton has made along these lines. I’d like everybody on this site to think about what this man of God has accomplished. For starters he’s designed an offense which is totally dependent on a healthy quarterback —and yet he employs people like Callaway and Drevno as his o-line coaches. No one wants to play under coaches like that —as a consequence, we have no o-line. And our quarterbacks end the season seriously injured. Meanwhile, the Man of God who caused this situation refuses to take a one penny cut in salary during a year when the university is hemorrhaging money —even though he got to sit home during fall practice and half the season.
The worst part? He didn’t stand up for his team when they were asked to play on SUCCESSIVE short weeks —culminating in a Championship Game they shouldn’t have even played since their opponent forfeited. What a fucking piece of shit USC’s coach is.

    1. BTW, great post.

You can throw Bohn in there for not standing up for the kids, same for Folt and then to say it’s about the kids when you run and hide when it doesn’t go your way, fuck them all

      1. Yep. Bohn’s “statement” is more loathly than Helton’s. He wants to say thanks to the players for their “sacrifices”? How ’bout staring by not making them sacrifice quite so much and quite so often, you backstabbing, pussy piece of shit.

      2. I totally agree! How do you think Matt Fink and Mo Hassan must feel, with the USC leadership opting out of a bowl game, ending their respective college careers, when both would’ve had a chance to play in a bowl game. I have followed USC closely since 1972, and I am so disgusted with leadership at the university and athletic department from the top on down. Disgusted. Tone-deaf, greedy and arrogant. I am not wealthy nor do I have the means to donate to the university or athletic department, but if the donors, boosters and alums would STOP sending money and attendance drops, it is the only thing (MONEY) that greedy U$C ever seems to pay attention to.

    2. Remember not all that claim Christ, are true… He said, He Never knew them in Mt 7.
3rd commandment…Taking Gods name is not about cussing, it is claiming to be His ,using His name in vain…helton seems to fit the picture… he lies 24×7, which is also covered in the commandments. Everywhere the word vain appears in O.T. it is only about false professors of being Gods plus false teachers/claimers of prophecies, etc…
the cussing part is covered in the Bible also but is called filthy communications, etc…Paul mentions it a lot. I don’t ever look to helton as a christian example.

      1. So on the money, Tim. If I never hear Helton mention God again it’ll be too soon. Every time he’s in a jam, every time he’s called out, every time he grabs for another year on the job —- out comes the God talk. He reminds me of the pimps I prosecuted who’d make sure they wore a big crucifix on the day they testified.

    3. Agree 100% MG. The one thing I just don’t understand about this “Praise the Lord”, etc.. is this – are “you” saying that you’re more worthy than your opponent? Is he a hedon? Is God really a Trojan?
It’s all BS! I don’t believe God cares which team you support. I believe he cares much more how you lead your life and treat your fellow man. If God favours humility, saying how humble you are is not the way to go. Just saying.

  4. Is the new motto ” Opt Out On ! ”

There is a new culture at USC, it’s call WOKE

What ever happened to ” Anyone, Anyplace, Anytime ” ????

Look at it this way, at least you didn’t have to pay to see this mess, you may not get to pay next year either and by then, you probably won’t care anymore

USC higher ups don’t want to be know as a football school anymore, they are perfectly happy being a PAC 12 South contender and maybe top 25 team, the days of USC being a football power ae over, get used to it.

  5. Helton has been the Head Coach for 5 years and he makes a statement like this? Straight out of the Larry Scott “Future so bright you gotta wear shades” playbook.

  6. Really Clay? “The culture has changed and we’re on our way to a National Championship?” The only culture you’ve established is a culture of mediocrity. If you believe one word out of this assholes mouth, you then you are either stoned, stupid, or both. Helton should be terminated for that statement alone on general principle alone. One of the most disrespectful things you can do to a person is insult their intelligence, and that statement does just that to every USC fan.

  7. Culture is what you make cheese out of. Helton reeks like smelly cheese. USC after Pete Carroll has been like Led Zeppelin after John Bonham died, they never played together again.
Chew on this for a minute. The Refs stopped the final play of the game
They blew it dead. The call was intentional grounding. The ball never hit the ground, it was caught by a lineman. The lineman was well down field before they stopped the play. So it could have been called illegal forward pass or ineligible receiver but the ball was tipped thus making it a legal pass to anyone who caught it. So why was the play stopped? If it had been allowed to proceed we might have scored. We will never know.

  8. Coach Helton will never quit & leave $164,675 on the table every two weeks. Not going to happen, ever. If he is to be replaced b4 his contract expires…rumors will abound.
    1. A wealthy donor offers a buyout, quietly.
    2. A new coach quietly lined up & inked.

  9. How many times have we heard Gomer say that his kids came up “one play short”?

    Gomer is such a punk.

    CLAY HELTON

    Opening Statement:

“Great college football game. Credit to Oregon and Mario (Cristobal), played a wonderful game. Very good game plan, and the kids played with great heart. As well as our team. I’ve never been associated with a group of kids who fight harder or have more heart. There’s a lot of hurt souls in our locker room right now. It’s something that I know our kids wanted extremely badly, to win a championship, and we came up a play too short today. These kids have taken us and laid a stepping stone, a foundation to what a championship team is going to look like. And I’m proud of our older kids and our veterans, one, for the way they played and two, for where they’ve got us to which is on the edge of winning championships. Based on the lessons learned this season, I know we’ll take a step forward in the future.”

    1. ” a foundation to what a championship team is going to look like ”
      tackling the punter ?
      jumping offsides ?
having 5 men in the backfield ?
throwing a pass away, right to the other team ?
      having a punt blocked ?
not being able to run the ball consistently ?
giving up yards by the bushel basket full ?
winning games by pure luck ?
having a school president, BOT and AD who couldn’t care less that their football head coach is a Bible thumping bullshitter ?

I’m sure Bama, LSU, Clemson & OSU have the same ” foundation “

When you filmed the prison scene in the movie “American Me”, did you let the director know that you prefer to do your own stunts? Lastly, remember, Trump’s inauguration is on January 20th.

  10. The penalties are a problem but that didn’t hurt the Pete Carroll teams. PC’s teams were the most penalized in the league. As far as the national championship talk….more empty promises that I’m sure will never be fulfilled. I hope I’m wrong.

  11. USC will never win a football NC with the team of Caruso, Nikias, Folt and Bohn And a FB coach named Helton.

Also, McVay and Goff will never win a Super Bowl. Goff sucks and has regressed. Is Clay moonlighting as their QB coach ?

  12. I have been waiting for when USC and Oregon would play in a conf championship game… Well, they did and the result was – both team’s QBs made bad plays, even though the other players on both teams played reasonably well. In the end, the QB who effed it up the worst had his team lose. The worst part of the whole thing is that, even if USC won by 50, Notre Dame still would have went in ahead of USC to the playoffs. Cancelling the bowl game is a bitch move. It’s like a ho trying to run away from her pimp.

  13. I have to agree with Mr. Wolf.
We were playing in the conference championship game and came out flat making stupid penalties like it was week 1.

Helton is definitely a man of God who just lies to his team, the fans and HIMSELF. He hasn’t been honest with himself since the day he was named head coach.
