Morning Buzz: When Will USC Win Silverware?

In what universe is it OK for Oregon State to win a Pac-12 Tournament while USC cannot even make a final?

This is where some USC fans mystify me. They are happy with 20-win seasons and zero accomplishment during the Andy Enfield era.

All we hear about are the recruits, the transfers, the hype and USC still can’t outperform Oregon State at the Pac-12 Tournament?

USC had the Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. And that’s good for second place in the conference and a semi-final exit in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, Oregon State, picked last in the preseason poll, wins the Pac-12 Tournament.

Coach Bohn can say, “It’s about the seed” but how about some silverware too?

Former USC players Jordan Usher and Kyle Sturdivant got some Saturday night as Georgia Tech won the ACC Tournament.

USC has a lot of nice pieces of the puzzle but for some reason (Thanks, Enfield!), it can’t take one big step and claim a trophy.

Well, it’s Selection Sunday. Let’s see if USC can catch lightning in a bottle.

  1. NFL QB stat:

“Did you know? This is one for the “draft-a-quarterback” crowd. Darnold has posted a Total QBR of 46, 46 and 40 in his first three seasons. Since QBR began in 2006, Eli Manning (2016-18) is the only other quarterback to post three consecutive seasons with a sub-50 QBR (min. 300 attempts).”

    ESPN Staff Writer

If the Jets keep Darnold for the 2021 NFL season, his contract will cost the Jets $25million. Or as I like to categorize it: “Grand Theft Fraud” in plain sight.

      2. Absolutely! Rosen certainly isn’t making $25 million with the 9’ers.

But once again Helton you fail to address my point. By any standard, the piglet is a NFL Bust and Jets want to unload him.

  2. SC is perfectly happy with Enfield and Gomer. The school seems to be deemphasizing sports, especially male sports, it’s all about the WOKE culture and all that goes with it.

    Congrats to OSU.

  4. I would imagine that they will run out the clock on Enfield’s contract and then hire a new head coach. There is no reason to pay out Enfield’s contract and then also need to pay for a new coach.

The problem is probably not Bohn, it is the contract that was signed with Enfield under the previous “leadership”.

The biggest lesson I hope we learn is that paying a guy millions of dollars to coach a team does not guarantee winning. There are probably coaches who would take 500K and would do a better job than Enfield of teaching, training, etc.

Maybe athletic departments at universities just need to be re-imagined and the whole salary structure of athletics is just perverse. Enfield earned $165K in his job before coming to SC. In what universe should he be making $3 million a few years later with no real accomplishments, just failure?

  5. Recruiting players is one thing recruiting the correct pieces is another to form a complete team.. To win the major games including tournaments you need a fast/quick point guard. I like Ethan Anderson, but he is not fast or quick enough to be a point guard. It was a big blow to this team when Kyle Studivant transferred he was the true point guard we needed. Sadly, both he an Jordan Usher are now playing for Georgia Tech.

USC, will not win the Pac 12 or advance further without a true point guard this year, or in the future. It is up to Enfield and Staff to recruit one immediately if the program is going to get to the next level.

USC basketball has had a good season, but not a great one. Are Clay Helton, and Andy Enfield overpaid the answer is yes, but at least USC basketball has improved under Andy which has raised expectations, and the program is improving. The USC football program has not improved under Clay Helton, and in fact is no longer a factor on the national level like it once was. USC football glory is for now a thing of the past, and the real injustice is paying a coach as much as they do for such a terrible product he is putting out on the field.

Enfield, has some immediate work to do if the program is going to make it to the next level If he doesn’t get it done in the next two years it is then a time for a change. We have already seen what Helton can do the program is slipping, and the poor results justify an immediate change that should have been made 3 years ago.

    1. Nice, tommyd —please add to your astute observations that Andy, for all his faults, doesn’t lie every time he opens his mouth, doesn’t pucker up to kiss Carol’s ass every time she’s in range and doesn’t put out patently insincere & self serving religious videos. Andy is a coach. And although he’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, he’s not a fraud and an embarrassment (like one of our other coaches)…..

      1. An Andyain’twinning quote from the Sunday, 3/14, OC Register:

“We can compete with anybody,” USC head coach Andy Enfield said following the Colorado loss. “I think we’re 19-0 when three guys get double figures and 3-7 when they don’t. So we need a third scorer.”

        Oh well, I guess that explains SUCC’s 0 – 3 Colorado record.

        Thanks Enfield

  6. It’s like I posted yesterday. With the SJW leadership of Folt/Bohn, winning championships is not what USC is about right now. It’s about being PC, saying the right things, and being accommodating, even to your opponents. Maybe Folt/Bohn will start to get the message when the money begins to dry up and there are empty seats in Galen and the Coli.

      1. JO just keeps on giving. Rose Bowl an echo chamber when UCLA plays. How embarrasing. When they allow live attendance again, UCLA will need to keep its army of cardboard cutouts to avoid the utter shame of so many empty seats. In fact, so few people show up that plan on holding joint events during UCLA games.

      2. If UCLA separated out the freebie tix they give away, their legitimate paid attendance at the Rose Bowl would likely average under 30,000. They will need to pipe in crowd noise next year.

      3. I like that, when discussing piped in crowd noise at the Rose Bowl, you limited your prediction to “next year.” Few of us expect football to continue beyond that at UCLA…..
