Saturday Buzz: USC Sells Presidential Estate For $25 Million

Remember how Carol Folt could not live in the Seeley Mudd Estate in San Marino because it fell into disrepair and needed retrofitting? Remember USC claimed it needed $20 million in renovations?

Well, lo and behold, the USC presidential mansion just sold for $25 million to an undisclosed buyer, which is $500,000 more than the university asked. It was apparently in fine condition.

So gone is the 7-acre property that was originally donated by Gen. George Patton. Folt happily resides at the much-smaller $8.6 million house she wanted in Santa Monica so she could live close to the water.

Mudd left the San Marino estate to USC in 1979, with the stipulation that it house the university president.

He should have prevented them from selling it too.

  1. Nothing’s too good for our Carol. She is a fine ED-U-CA-TOR. $25 mil would’ve paid nearly all of Urban Meyer’s contract for three years and USC would’ve tripled that amount in increased revenue and donations. Carol Fraud is an idiot and so is Rick Caruso, Marc Benioff, and the rest of the USC Board of Trustees.

    1. No, the idiots pretty much congregate and post on this board, following the Lord of the Idiots, Scott Wolf.

Interesting you are here. No one buying your schtick anymore on the Peristyle? Sad you can’t get likes and upvotes from that crowd.

      1. This isn’t an ass kissing site go somewhere else. Rah Rah. We won’t settle for mediocrity with incompetent idiots in charge. Stealing money for a pay check. Haden, Swan, Folt, Bohn and the board of bustees. Got it!

  2. The Mudd estate has needed significant repairs for years. That’s a fact, even thought it doesn’t jibe with Scottie’s agenda.

And who wouldn’t want to live near the ocean? It gonna be triple digits in San Marino this weekend. And we still have eight more weeks of hot-as-hell summer to go. And the heat is only going to get worse in coming years.

    1. Oh, it’s going to be “worse’ than “hot as hell” in coming years”, huh? I guess weather forecasters are a lot better at predicting the weather for “coming years” than they are at predicting it from day to day….

      1. Weather Channel is making enormous misses even 12 hours before. Might be because a couple of satellites are down…

      2. Ha! I guess they’re ALWAYS down — Weather Channel misses EVERY day here in Maui on wind speed, temperature and precipitation.

    2. George you sound like a bitter USC athletic department staff member. Wolfe is correct this time. Carol is a selfish lady in over her head. This landmark historical house should have never been sold and Folt should have been given a dorm room if she did not want to live Seely Mudd Estate. Carol represents everything wrong with USC and society a spoiled entitled brat. Fight On and this heat is nothing!!!!!

    3. I don’t get it. What part of “she gets to live in the presidential estate for free and then when her term is done she is on her own or (in the actual case) she gets a lavish estate purchased for her for her to live in the rest of her life where she wants or get to sell and pocket the windfall” doesn’t any one get. And this is all on her bloated salary which she has to dedicate 0 to housing and walks away with the house down the road. 1.4m per year plus perks and incentives. Let us also remember she was in the process of getting canned at UNC for being at the wheel durning 2 major scandals. I’m not one to say that anyone from any background can’t be great at their job’s. But let’s face it, she checked all the right boxes for the pc conscious board to feel good about themselves. Even if society wants to play this game, at least go out and find a series of great candidates and then see if they can check the boxes and not the other way around. Otherwise all these institutions, organizations, and departments will just turn into bloated crap like USC is becoming. The notion of “We need to spend money on upper management like the Ivies ” or “we need to spend money on athletics and football like the SEC or Oregon” does not do the trick. It’s throwing money down a hole. Spending money is fine, make sure you do your due diligence when spending the money. In my opinion she is a waist of money and not a neutral waist. She was a move backward. And that is saying a lot looking at her predecessor. So many bad moves in the last 15 years from upper mgt and the board. And they have all been to cover their asses to not get sued (which actually backfired) and to not look bad (ditto). They ended up throwing more money down a rat hole to save a little. Bohn… the book is still out. The way it looks, she and the board have castrated him and now he’s just riding out the contract (his own). But who knows.

      2. Bravo! vault91 thanks for breaking it down. For the clueless rah rahs, still in denial of the incompetence. Maybe that will give them a clue of what’s really going on at USC. Nattys are the goal every year not Pac 12 south titles.

  3. Scooter,

Where does the money go from the sell of the house? Does it go back to the Mudd Estate or does SC keep it and use it to pay off the players who think they deserve to be paid? Get on it and find out Scooter.

  4. Carol likes the ocean…there is even more water around Hawaii. That sounds about right for her in terms of a college administrative job. But not the main campus at Manoa – they have a football team.

    1. Ha! [Carol has it in her contract she never has to be any closer to our football team than she was to Robert E. Lee’s statue].

      1. You get the point MG lol. They just need to plug Folt in a Travelocity commercial for the up coming season, that would be classic. All decked out in a gnome SC gear outfit!

      2. Is it possible Carol would just be wasted in a commercial — you know, all gnomed-up —smilingly going over Niagara Falls or being dropped out of a cargo plane? Maybe it would be more fun to star her in a Twilight Zone where she comes alive & scares promiscuous college students as they “misuse” the lawn at midnight?

    1. The old taxes were probably incredibly low, given that the tax base year was 1979 (prop 13). That is one reason that USC should have kept it as an asset. And does anyone really think that the property is worth $45 million ? ($25 million transactions price + $20 million in repairs) Sounds like the repair budget was just a wee bit overstated.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. A cynic might say the repairs were overstated (like multiplied by a factor of ten) to justify the purchase of Carol’s Santa Monica Love Nest…..
Question: How hard is it to be USC’s President these days? It seems to only require (1) repeating what you hear on CNN when it comes to political issues and (2) doing what Caruso tells you to do on everything else…….

  5. How about the Title IX police now going after the UCLA cheer director?

This story is too funny – Evidently, Allan Robbins, former CA state senator who left office due to unlawful activities with 16 year old girls as well as extorted $ when in office, asked the cheerleaders to attend a Vegas show @ my Caesars. Per UCLA, nothing wrong with Robbins request but the director was fired!! This lady will win her case. WTF has happened in our great country as a result of this title IX BS?

  6. No surprise here. It’s been on the news all week. Housing is so tight right now that people are in bidding wars over shacks. Paying over the price is not new, and the buyer is undisclosed because it was either Max Nakias or twelve homeless dudes who pooled their off ramp money for the month of December.
The money really could buy out Helton’s contract, but I don’t think fan apathy is a concern among the administrators.
I am always torn between seeing Football fail and Helton fired or Football doing okay and Helton fired due to lack of attendance. Which will do the least long term harm? I thought about finding a me-too coed to claim Helton touched her inappropriately, but even Gloria All Red wouldn’t believe that.

  7. The Mudd Estate looks outdated for the neighborhood. I would subdivide the property and get 6-7, $7million homes, maybe more.

  8. I would be find with all the perks and pay if she was a visionary leader who was making USC the premier higher education institution that makes every Trojan proud. I would support Folt if she wanted to cut the sports teams, but build the premier university in the country.

But she doesnt present any big vision, plan or even hope for making USC greater. She is at best a bureaucrat who is incapable of big ideas or inspiring students and alumni.

But the real problem is not Folt, it is Caruso, because she lives in Santa Monica to be close to him and take his orders.
