USC Morning Buzz: An Image From Hell

This video below is the USC created under Mike Bohn today.

Image. Hype. Talk. Fooling. Preening. Perception. Superficial. Hollywood.

All geared to recruits or people under 20.

What never gets emphasized?

Winning. Performing. Developing. Improving as a group. Coaching. Comradery. Respect. Common purpose. Leadership.

  1. I have to hope our current “athletic director” is as uninterested & unaware of what is being put out by his own media department as our last “athletic director” was of what was going on in his own ‘walk-on’ program. If not, Mike Bohn is way more clueless and superficial than I thought he was ….and that’s pretty fricking clueless & superficial.

    1. USC = A bunch of wannabes more interested in their image than winning.

There isn’t one player on the Trojans roster with the exception of Drake London that would start on any of the Pete Carroll teams.

90% of the Trojans roster today wouldn’t be able to handle Carroll’s practices.

  2. Pretty slick video if you’re a Top 5 team which USC hasn’t been anywhere near being since 2016. Bohner if you’re going to talk the talk, then walk the walk.

    1. Charles —do you think Clemson or Alabama or Ohio State would want to be associated with a video that so missed the nobility of the sport of football?

      1. This video looks like somebody watched a tape of USC’s universally panned antics before the Alabama game and thought, “Cool –this has the makings of a fantastic piece of promotion!”

      2. Those great old Miami teams had lots of swagger and they backed it up on the field. USC’s swagger is fake … they’re in a middling conference and would get crushed by those teams you mention. Clay Helton is soft.

      1. UCLA FB never claimed to be elite. Defeating UCLA is one thing, SUCC losing to Alabama 52 – 6 is quite another.

SUCC FB: Elementary school cupcake bully.

  3. This is….incompetence. No wonder the recruits are not committing. My guess is that TO and defensive staff leave after this year. Is Bohn allowing Clay to hang himself?

  4. This is the most undermining garbage I’ve ever seen. It’s disgusting, and an insult to what USC and USC athletics is, it’s traditions and accomplishments. I’d rather SC close the program than continue to insult and demean it. Who the hell allows these videos to be made, this denigration to continue? Oh, that’s right, the BOT and their ethnic infighting and woke battles so they create a “new SC”, the Shanghai Polytech-Brandeis of the West.

      Amen! A-fucking-men!

The present day USC in no way shape or form resembles USC’s winning tradition of the past.

Clay Helton is pure garbage, in way over his head, that’s no secret. Fans of other Blue Blood programs around the country can’t believe USC has stuck with this clown Helton as long as tbey have, they say USC has taken their Blue Blood status for granted and they’re right.

USC is not putting forth any effort to improve the football program.

    1. Mrs. Helton,

I think these videos brings down the program. In the glory years, the individual player videos were waht they accomplished on the field such as AD scoring against ND, Charlie Phillips intercepting a pass, Munoz knocking someone on their rear end. These players have not accomplished a thing on the field and yet SC and to an extent, the players are partaking in something that has not been earned, yet.

      1. Pasadenatrojan: Thank you. My sentiment exactly. It’s not bad enough the outsiders in administration are living off the blood, sweat and brains of the REAL TROJANS who made SC a great football powerhouse, it is disturbing to see these kids are given no direction and standards about real values. SC will remained doomed while Napoleana Folt rules without any football IQ and Bohn remains her court jester. Then, the incompetent head coach fraud can continue to bring SC to a lower level of competency each season and can continue to destroy SC, BUT he can do his unctuous routine and continue to give more game balls to administration and receive “man” hugs from bohn.

    2. Many of you are as clueless as Scott. They are not targeting YOU!!! My son is about to start his final year at San Diego St and he is a marketing major. He loves this stuff. Now, you don’t believe that Alabama would use Hollywood if it was in their backyard? They would be idiots not to. Also, if the team across town was using Hollywood, weather, and LA lifestyle to lure in recruits and transfers, many people here would be screaming bloody murder and saying “why didn’t we take advantage of everything LA has to offer!” Many of you here are idiots and don’t understand today’s teenagers.

      1. Lots of forgetful folks here. USC isn’t a mid west, rust belt team. Don’t tell me we haven’t done this forever. Scott posts story after story of players and coaches acting. Wild bunch anyone? We’ve always been Hollywood. When Pete was rolling he amped it up a notch, we were totally Hollywood. There were celebrities everywhere and the players ate it up. This is just a newer version.

      2. The primary reason that kids come to USC to play football is three letters…NFL. At the end of the day your best high school football players are going to choose a school that gives them the best chance of getting to the NFL via coaching and development; something that USC has been lacking the last five years, not some half ass video.

      4. God forgive me for replying… But no. I’ve been a university administrator, a leader in a large national fraternity, and a fraternity advisor, dealing with collegiate organizations, ROTC, and their marketing…

What young people– especially young men– want (and where they go) is a place that makes them feel like there is tradition, part of something bigger, like something with meaning, with prestige, heritage, a tradition of fighting and winning, with values, action, connection, brotherhood, that makes them feel they are becoming ways significant and have a future and will be respected and known and labor under people that command respect and are respected and known. Kids wanted to be accepted and taken in by a Family that sees something of themselves in the youth and vice versa. That’s what SC has sold all over… If anything it is what people attack SC for.

They especially attacked USC for it during our last run. USC thought it was “better”, “arrogant” about its traditions,- there must be something going on behind all that All American USC-USA, heritage and tradition boasting, those articulate and well presented star players and bluest of blue blood programs at a highly esteemed school known for producing successful alumni, a Family of alum… (And that’s exactly what USC used it’s football program for– to further the image of the University of winners, tradition, All American-ess, success.)

That’s what USC has always sold, all the way down to the uniform. Kids want to see and be respected by the Marcus Allens, the Willie McGinests, see the path way to be like them. Palmer, Leinart, Bush, or go back to our stars of recent and long ago– USC is the All American school, the American dream of a college in a Hollywood setting. Our stars have always been polished– they’ve come across as future CEOs or respected professionals, not gangstas.

USC has always went to the greatest lengths to avoid ever looking like it was punkish, superficial, nouveau, classless, tacky, flash in the pan, meaningless. We sell that to kids, we present that as our University, it is what being a Trojan is about, or at least it used to be.

PS, any kid interested in marketing should learn about this. This is what conceptual marketing is all about.

      6. Global –You’re on! This video says way more about how far adrift USC is than anything I’ve seen…yet. Anybody who has ever run anything knows that you don’t try to guess what people want …. you give them what you believe in. Or you pay a very heavy price.

    3. If USC wants to make YouTube stars out of it’s student/athletes then let that pervert Rick Caruso put them on his yacht and he can take them to the Bahamas, let them video themselves pretending to be something they’re not and he can sit there and jerk off to them while they do.

Rick Caruso is not immune to scandal, this shit keeps up, he is going to find his ass embroiled in it.

  6. Give it an hour it’ll go away by itself. Twitter cycles faster than Facebook and tic-toc is a flash in the pan. Here however, it’s good for the rest of the week.
I noticed that USC has a number 0 jersey. A recent rules change allowed the number so I expect to six of them to line up on the sidelines. Sometimes when Scott complains about something he’s right on. Having more than one person wearing a number is stupid when you have 100 to choose from and 80 players.

    1. Schools can carry 110 players, 85 scholarship players and 25 walk-ons. So they have to use double numbers. Do your homework before you post and look like an idiot.

Boy you don’t know how fun using that line is.
        Of course I’m an idiot. I wouldn’t post here if I wasn’t.
I was merely quoting from Scott’s playbook. One of his often used complaints is having duplicate numbers on the field at the same time. (The penalty yada, yada etc.) most players know to change jerseys when they have to but Helton doesn’t know enough about football to teach this.

  7. If you don’t have a steak, then sell the sizzle, or if you are holding a 2, 3 and 5 in poker, try to bluff your way out. What else can SC do but appeal to kids’ desire for an income by selling the supposed glamour and money of Hollywood?

  12. Agree with you 100 – Scott – the people responsible for the this hype piece simply do not know what is really responsible for a winning culture and atmosphere – what the hell does Hollywood and Motion Picture Industry have to do with USC and USC football? Has Hollywood, Movies, and the Air Raid offense ever won anything? Over the successfully seasons and years at SC – it is the coaches, players, dedication, discipline, sacarifice, common purpose, hard work and focus. With this social media post – USC has got it backwards again.
