Clay Helton Is Finally Fired!

He got two games even though it wasn’t a make-or-break season?

Donte Williams is No. 2 even after his secondary got shredded on Saturday night?

Bohn and his lackey, Brandon Sosna, were huddling all morning. That’s one reason I had not posted much today.

They obviosly want Luck Fickell but I doubt he leaves Cinciinati at this point of the season. Some other names were watching: James Franklin, Bob Stoops, Matt Campbell, Chris Petersen and Bob Stoops.

Here is Mike Bohn’s statement:

I’m sure that statement has been sitting on Bohn’s desk for nearly two years. I will have more today.

  1. I hope they search the pro ranks for a new head coach. Then fire the entire staff with the exception of Donte Williams for recruiting.

THE worst thing Mike Bohn could do is to hire from within this current staff. THE worst.

    1. I like and admire Donte —anyone who has ever listened to him knows he’s a huge improvement over Clay. But I hope there aren’t any fans out there who think he can save this season. He can’t. Donte is stuck with a bunch of assistants who know they’re dead meat and are already looking for their next job.
I hope Folt and Bohn have a plan beyond getting rid of Clay. And I hope that plan factors in how few top coaches will want anything to do with them.

      1. Do you really believe that top coaches wont want the USC position? I disagree completely. Bohn/Sosna need a top coach and will need to be willing to give him full control and enough resources.

If Bohn/Sosna hire a questionable coach and it backfires, they are in deep trouble. If they hire a top coach that the fan base celebrates and he somehow doesnt succeed, they wont be in trouble, and they will have a few years “grace period” with the fans.

Bohn/Sosna will give the promises of control and support needed to get a top coach. They would be stupid to do anything else.

      2. Would be thrilled if you are right, but overwhelming past history and trend analysis suggests otherwise. And you do recall that other than Urban’s interest a year ago, USC has famously face planted when attempting to attract quality candidates throughout its history (again, including recent history, most famously when it hired Sark). I hope you are right, and will be more than happy to congratulate you at such time…but until then…I will remain skeptical, given Folt and Bohn’s record over the past two years (and by extension, Swann, Haden, Nikias, etc.). Have they learned something between last January and now? It’s not like firing Helton required an epiphany…perhaps they have (ie the botching of what could have been a galaxy-shaking hire)…we’ll see…

    2. Bohn/Sosna will hire the head coach and he will have full authority to do what he wants. If they wanted to try to fix it with internal people, they would have kept Clay, who asked them how high to jump on a daily basis.

Graham Harrell is the biggest loser in this. He was arrogant and ignorant and bashed his head coach to players. Does anyone think another head coach will want GH as their OC? He cant get a head coach job and has shown he is not a team player.

      1. Adam Schefter thinks USC is considering hiring Eric Bieniemy as the Trojans head coach.

Yeah, that’s not going to happen. If it did then all the proto-typical golden hair beach boy QB’s that USC is bias torwards wouldn’t have a chance in hell of starting with Bieniemy in charge. It would be all about dual-threat QB’s…USC ain’t going to go for that, it makes too much sense.

Mike Bohn backed down. Both of them are insisting on bringing back Kliff Kendrick Kingsbury back as the head coach to replace Clay Helton. Mike Bohn is on the phone right now to trying to hire coach KKK!

  2. Good points Michael! Yes, the assistants will all be looking for new jobs starting today especially our wonder boy Graham Harrell who probably thought he was next in line to replace Clay. I see conflicts ahead with Donte and Graham, but I hope they can get along, and do what is best for the players.

I am not expecting a great season nor should others. However, there is now hope that real Trojan football will return very soon. I have a feeling they are going to go with Chris Peterson, or Bob Stoops since they will be available sooner rather than waiting for a pro coach or successful college coach who might not be available until late December or January. Neither are my top choices, but both are solid football coaches. Both know what USC was, should be, and can be by re-building this program correctly.

I applaud Mike Bohn greatly for making the move now. His next big move will be to also sign Andy Enfield to a new contract. There have been many who tried before to build a strong basketball program at USC and failed. Andy Enfield, has accomplished that and much more so they need to keep him.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Literally that’s 2 good years in his entire career. Not a single conference title. 3 NCAA tourney appearances in 10 seasons during the 64 team era! The jokes tell themselves. One of the 2 “good years” coming from a dud conference during a season of upsets playing only the low seeds… USC has frankly been cheating its ass off to give him top ten talent each year, and padding the sched and this is what he did with it. And please, be honest w the schedules, – just tell you to look at conference record, and the P12 is no world beater. He’s had a losing record by a good margin to go with his lack of conference titles. That’s why you embarrassed us with the reminder of the NIT appearance with a loss in second round to fill space. Unless he’s gonna hire a guy to coach with sons that are couple of top five post players in the country every year, and have some more FBI investigations, we need a real head coach.

You dont win at a school like FGC and USC with luck my man. We were the bottom of the conference at #12 when he took over.
Remember Floyd and Mayo buried the programs momentum and at a school like USC hes kicked a** getting the program to where it is.
        One more thing……
He’s 4-0 against that guy from ucla.

      4. You aren’t saying anything. First, yes, you do win once at FGCU. If you don’t know what you’re talking about stop. At FGCU, Andy never won his conference. He had a single year at the NCAA tourney. Otoh, his successor won the conference 3 times and was second 3 times and went to the tourney 2x. Lol Jesus… Mercer, the winner of the Atlantic Sun Conference was passed over their regular season champion (a story in itself).

And seeing you don’t realize that before tourney expansion, it was just 2 wins to get to Sweet 16. Because of an upset, one of those teams was 7th seed San Diego. They lost to U Florida.

That said, we all know the talent SC has brought in by hook or crook, including a lot of crook. No one missed the agent tell-all book about SC moving families and paying for homes and jobs and prep school, or the FBI investigation showing we had assistance paying off players. .. I don’t have a problem with that, but you don’t cheat that hard, have nothing but top 10 recruiting classes, have a powder puff schedule and STILL never win your conference, ever, ever, ever, and have one good year in ten. Smh, And no one, absolutely no one uses UCLA is not a measure of hoops quality in the last 20 years at least– but they actually went further than us in the tourney. Ha. lool

Guys if AE has a great season, and I mean a real great season this year when he has every reason to, I’m all for him, That crap system he had got replaced but really, he just replaced it with a single dimension system that got exposed, wasting a situation and talent that by all means should have led to the NC game. Everything lined up, Andy just got exposed and wasted a rare, golden opportunity for SC hoops to raise it’s level. Hell, I was always hoping CH would stop being such a stubborn SOB with his shite offense and lack of discipline, but he chose to die on the hill, like he had to defend his incompetence. You would think Charles Manson was on trial at USC. The review process for the McCoy case is too long.

We need this guy back on the team. He is the big play receiver we need to go along with Drake. The DA dropped the case what’s USC’s problem with making a decision 1) He is allowed back in school, and back on the football team or 2) Kicked out of school, and dismissed from the football team.

The longer this goes on the more it screws up the kid’s life.

Make your decision USC so the kid can move on or continue his education. All the facts must be in announce your decision

      2. Well…we need to remember that we’re USC Basketball and not Kansas, Gonzaga, Arizona or even Ucla so we can’t expect to run before crawling which we have and walking which we are. So you may not realize it now but we are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Enfield has brought in some talent that is paying dues now in the NBA and recruits are aware of the kids that are in the league that Enfield has coached. Guys that weren’t supposed to do too much elevated their games at the end. Julian Jacobs wasnt able to play his game under K.O. He was a player that we counted on for big plays under Enfield. Elijah Stewart wasn’t supposed to be in the class and go to Loyola Marymount but became a three year starter. If there was anyone raw and needed time it was Chimezi Metu who came along faster than everyone expected and left with quality big man abilities. I’ll say this Enfield needs to win games in Colorado when he should. Those hiccups are unexceptable now. He may not have won the conference yet but it really hasn’t made a difference up to this point but the team looks ready for bigger things so it may come soon. You and I are clearly passionate about SC and want the toughest product on the floor. Maybe I can set the bar higher now and maybe you can lower yours a little bit with Enfield. Agree to disagree. I hear you loud and clear and don’t want to set the bar at beating the Bruins. It’s definitely much higher.

      2. Hope he’s okay too. He’s missing generating a good debate about the replacement, and what can be changed in the interim. He was also surprisingly quiet on the big pass on Texas/BYU/OK ST expansion opportunities, which he’s indicated before is a big mistake, and I agree. And he teased out a bit about the P12 already committing to nothing and actually stepping up its scheduling vs the SEC rather than isolating which was the only teeth in the “alliance”. And he really has said little about the NIL and USC players, esp as we’re seeing things like Michigan St. signing a sponsorship deal to pay every player– the pressure is on for USC and every school to find sponsors to get top pay for players which will be bonkers.

Are there schools that are “monarchical?” Or am I so clueless that I’m missing my own point and don’t understand why people are laughing at me? Maybe I should aim low and get a basic cashiering job where my pea-sized brain won’t be too taxed.

  19. I am thinking more and more that Scottie is in discussions regarding another paid gig, given he was the most vocal critic in the blogosphere about Helton, and is likely getting a lot more attention this week. Maybe a redo at SI, but more to Scottie’s design? Maybe with 24/7? Otherwise, an absence for this amount of time would certainly be a one-off.

  20. A belated tribute to Scott:
A week before my wife and I were all set to go to some downtown L. A. theater to see Richard Burton in the revival of Camelot, a L. A. Times theater critic made fun of Burton for being too lazy to lift Excalibur above his head during one of the songs. Burton was hurt by the review since he wanted to keep it from the audience that —not only was his health failing –but 4 of the disks in his spine had crystallized and he couldn’t lift anything above his waist. Burton exited the production and the lesser Richard Harris took over. All the people who wanted to see Burton do the role were screwed out of their chance by an ingrate critic. I gave our tickets to my brother and his wife.
Scott gave us a lot. We owe him. He didn’t owe us. His “If It’s Friday” column will be remembered for a long time by all of us who followed and looked forward to it. His old Daily News column was a joy cuz it didn’t look like anyone else’s. Scott just told the truth as he saw it. [Check out the stuff that’s being written now —I mean, holy shit].
In return, Scott had to put up with the frequent complaint (from me and others) that he didn’t jump a story first. Who cares? Scott wasn’t our investigative reporter –he was an instigator, an editorialist, a provocateur. Now, we’re left with a bunch of people who will sing happy songs [“USC will be favored to win the remainder of their games and is still very much in contention for the playoffs!”]….
We miss ya, Scott. You were one of a kind!

    1. To Scott’s credit, the best aspect of this blog (and previous iterations) was to not censor comments, and create a free fire zone. People could be as thoughtful or crass as they wanted. We would police ourselves and no ones comments really mattered. Just 1s and 0s in the ether. Many good laughs and levity in a world that often takes itself too seriously.

  21. USC had a chance to get Urban Meyer 2 1/2 years ago but Folt wanted no part of him because of his past. She knew that Urban Meyer would eventually go to the NFL. So now that he did go to the NFL and everyone is mentioning his name as USC’s next coach, she knows it’s impossible to get him so she’ll say we tried but it’s out of our hands now.
She blew it because Urban Meyer would have turned the program around within two years and it would have made her look good.

  22. The problem with Scottie going to another platform is that it somehow doesn’t comes close to translating to this mishmash here, including the lack of a spelling/grammar check, engaging the “colorful” characters who inhabit scottieworld.

Michael, we did do something for Scottie in that our clicks enriched his ad revenue…

If on the other hand by some miracle…then it will be back to the “save for the 2006 debacle…not a meaningful game since Vermeil’s Jimmy Page record label event in that stadium where you are only allowed regular season access to…” Or something like that.

Ten need-to-knows for Week Three …

        1) It’s the biggest Saturday ever for the Pac-12 Networks, which will broadcast an unprecedented seven games over the course of 13 hours.

The logjam means three games won’t be shown on the national network:

Oregon State (vs. Idaho), Cal (vs. Sacramento State) and Arizona (vs. NAU) will be available only on the relevant regional network and through Pac-12 Now.

It’s hardly ideal, but there are 11 games on Saturday, and only four are on the ESPN and Fox networks. Overlap on the Pac-12 Networks is unavoidable with broadcast windows that stretch to more than three hours.

(The previous record for games on the networks was six, set on multiple occasions.)

        2) Washington is trying to avoid its first 0-3 start since the 2008 season, when the Huskies went 0-12 under Tyrone Willingham.

Basically, 2008 is the benchmark for any lows UW might challenge this season, although the winless record outside of league play in ’08 comes with a caveat: The Huskies faced Notre Dame, Oklahoma and BYU.

There were no Montanas or Arkansas States on the schedule.

        3) Since joining the Pac-12, Utah is undefeated against Mountain West opponents.

What’s more, the Utes haven’t lost two non-conference games in any season since they jumped from the MW in 2011.

They’re currently 1-1 and a tad wobbly entering Saturday’s date at San Diego State.

        4) Remaining undefeated teams, per Power Five conference:

        SEC: 10
        Big Ten: 7
        Big 12: 6
        ACC: 5
        Pac-12: 3

        5) Stanford’s visit to Vanderbilt is the first of four matchups the teams will play over the next decade.

The series was arranged years ago by Cardinal coach David Shaw and then-Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason, a former Stanford defensive coordinator.

The last time the Cardinal played a road game in the SEC was … never.

        6) Donte Williams is USC’s third interim coach in the past eight years. How have his predecessors fared in their debuts?

After Lane Kiffin was fired midway through the 2013 season, Ed Orgeron beat Arizona 38-31 in the Coliseum.

After Steve Sarkisian was removed midway through the 2015 season, Clay Helton lost at Notre Dame 41-31.

The Trojans visit Washington State on Saturday as an 8.5-point favorite.

        7) The Pac-12 is 2-5 against Power Five opponent with three games remaining — it can’t do better than a draw.

Colorado hosts Minnesota on Saturday, while Stanford and USC will face Notre Dame later in the season.

(In 2019, the conference was 5-5 against the Power Five and Notre Dame.)

        8) UCLA takes the field Saturday against Fresno State for the first time since the victory over LSU.

        Loss at Utah (2019)

        9) Washington State hosts USC for the first time since the memorable upset on a rowdy Friday night in 2017.

What was key back then will be key again:

The Cougars were 8-of-18 on third-down conversions, while the Trojans were a mere 2-of-11.

        10) Finally, the updated Heisman Trophy odds, via DraftKings:

        Alabama QB Bryce Young: 7/2
        Mississippi QB Matt Corral: 5/1
        Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler: 8/1
Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud: 10/1
        Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei: 18/1
        Cincinnati QB Desmond Ridder: 20/1
        Oregon TB C.J. Verdell: 25/1

How’s that for an early-season surprise?

    1. The Owns, goodnight, memorial, pinch-hit, this week’s Wolf’s Winner and Loser round-up.

      Winners:

Clown U FB circus finally pulls the belated, expensive, fire Helton trigger. But was the Boner’s action wise?

Clay Helton is carried off on his bozo shield. True, he was over his head coaching wise; however, Helton s/b respected for never whining about the harsh criticism he endured. Helton never showed up shit-faced at SUCC FB rallies or drunk ranting on late-night radio sports phone calls; no male or female reported Helton for sexual assault or harassment; he didn’t divorce or beat the shit out of his wife; he didn’t rudely chase SUCC co-ed’s on his H-D and, his players weren’t mistreated. Take a bow Mr. Helton, you did your best with dignity. Have fun spending your millions.

      Clown U Rah-Rah FB blowhards.

The next smuck HFBC that thinks he can salvage the capsized SS bozo dingy. The SUCC dingy has serious underwater structural damage.

Scott Wolf, the straw the stirs his crazy, outstanding, addictive Clown U blog.

      Losers:

Stanford 42 – SUCC 13 in the 4th Qtr., at the crumbling mausoleum……..’nuff said.

The SUCC FB team, they’re more interested in Hollywood celebrating an opponent’s TD than making a tackle.

Kid Slovis and “The Drake,” the garbage time twins.

The SUCC FB program loses more credibility.

US blog followers, if Wolf has really left the building and the fat lady has sung.

    1. Hard to understand why Helton/Harrel would recruit a gamebraking speedburning back only to have them sit on the bench.
What are these guys thinking? That strategy got one of them fired in mid-season with the other to follow at year-end!

      1. Kenan is truly a talent.
Nice to see that a “knucklehead” coach who could not use that special talent is now searching the “help wanted” adds.
