USC Morning Buzz: The Luke Fickell-Mike Bohn Ties May Be Overrated

When USC dedicated its new track building last month, an attendee told me, “Mike Bohn didn’t seem genuine. More like a cheerleader.”

I’ve seen Bohn act this way multiple times when talking to USC boosters/fans.

This reminded me that someone who worked closely with Bohn at Cincinnati told me, “He has no contacts. He doesn’t know a lot of people.”

That makes me wonder if Luke Fickell really cares if he works for Bohn again or cares that Bohn is the athletic director at USC?

Have you heard anything from Mick Cronin about working with Bohn?

I’ve heard Bohn was angry Cronin went to UCLA. And no college basketball coaches have told me Cronin had a close relationship with Bohn.

So maybe the Bohn-Fickell connection is overrated.

    1. I’m usually Scott Wolf’s #1 resource for USC inside information, but I recently had surgery to remove Yogi Roth’s balls from my tonsils, and a slight anal tear from hanging out with Clay. But I’ll be back on the scene in a few weeks guys, so be patient.

  3. No one gives a crap what Bohn thinks. He takes directions. The people who matter at USC will let him know what the perimeters of the current search are. As an errand boy, he’ll carry them out. As I said earlier, I’ve always wondered whether Caruso cared about Trojan football —

  4. Fickell turned down Michigan State and Tennessee; two big-time schools that are relatively close to his family’s home state of Ohio. Luke seems to be holding out for a blue-blood program. I think too much is being made of this issue (by Brady McCullough et al). As long as the money’s right and he can run the football program like he wants, Luke will have no issue with Mike Bohn.

  6. I’m surprised that asshole Tim Tessalone hasn’t started floating Mike Riley’s name as a possible head coach candidate.

    If someone really wanted to sink a program all they would have to do is hire one of these three fucking idiots…Mike Riley, Jeff Fisher or Jack Del Rio.

  9. Fickell is a long shot, but would be a slam dunk.

    We need to look beyond the short list of coaches that are thrown around and find a coach who is young enough to be at USC for a decade and who is an intense competitor. Also needs to be a great recruiter at the national level, competing for 5 star athletes.

  11. Fickell seems to be a guy who recognizes coaching talent. At some level, I’d almost prefer a new HC who is a guy who is not so well-known, but has tons of upside, and who would come, to some of the names discussed (Stoops, Franklin). But I worry that USC might end up with Stoops or someone of that caliber when the first choices say no (e.g. Fickell).

  12. The Clown U FB program is no longer a Pac-12 jewel; its more like a cheap costume jewelry FB program. The program thrives on cupcake competition and trips, stumbles and falls vs teams willing to punch back.
    The Stanford/Oregon St. blow-out, crumbling mausoleum losses prove it. Clown U has failed to keep up with the FB Jones’.

    SUCC no longer recruits itself. SUCC has shot itself in the foot so many times that the bozo reputation precedes them. The best So. Ca players are heading to SEC teams and/or better other conf. teams. The days when McKay stockpiled 4 and 5 star recruits to deny other team their services are long gone. Competition have leveled the recruiting process.

    In short, the SUCC FB Football is leaky-oil, wreck and any HC worth SUCC’s interest will know it. A good HC knows it’s easier to inherit a thriving FB program rather the risk his rep to overhaul an obsolete, 20th century Model T FB program.

    And I haven’t even mentioned the schizophrenic nature of Clown U’s BOT/President’s Univ. administration.

    SUCC will wind up employing a promising Asst. FB Coach with an excess of Rah-Rah enthusiasm and a dearth of common sense – Model T’s are slow and fragile.

      1. And unlike UCLA basketball, USC will win another National Championship with the right coach…… UCLA will get to the Finals….and lose by 1 point in the last second (maybe two or three years in a row)…..

  14. That video on urban Meyer just killed any chance of him getting hired by USC. I think the Jaguars will get him to resign or maybe even fire him. That’s really bad because he would have been the only one to turn USC’s program around. Fickell, Franklin and the rest of them don’t even come close to what this guy could’ve done for USC.

      1. Just watched the program pardon the interruption they said they think he will be gone. They also said don’t be surprise if he goes back to college and becomes the Trojan coach. That would be fabulous but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

  15. Finishing runner up in the FINAL FOUR is not winning a national championship. UCLA Basketball use to be measured on national titles not runner up finishes in the Final 4, and the Pac 12. USC Basketball is showing the greatest program upward development curve in the Pac 12 in the last 5 years. USC is even with UCLA in Basketball at this point in time. The flags in Pauley Pavilion are drawing dust soon it will be a USC town in both basketball and football. The midget Mick Cronin overachieved last season I see many teams even in the Pac 12 beating them this year.

  16. USC needs a big name like Jimmy Phuqerfaster. Then we can yell his name and he’ll yell back I’m going as fast as I can.
    I have heard Colin Powell isn’t interested and neither is John Wayne (who played at SC as Michael Morrison)
    Maybe we should go for a title IX hire like Condi Rice.
    No matter how you slice it, nobody is going to like the person they con into facing the wrath of USC fans for the next 5 years. And that person isn’t going to be named until late November at the earliest because anybody worth hiring is going to be a contender in their division. If they announce the decision before a bowl game it would surprise me.

  21. I know a senior staff member of the Penn State Athletic Department. It’s a done deal. James Franklin and his agent are negotiating the final terms of his contract. The announcement will come after Penn States final game of the season UNLESS PSU is one of the final 4 teams selected for the college football playoffs. Book It Dano. Franklin is already discussing his list of assistant coaches he will bring with him as well as new hires he is considering bringing on board. Dante will be retained with the title of Assistant Head Coach/Head of Recruiting. He will Coach all defensive backs (safeties and corners.) Franklin told the PSU Athletic Director that USC, Norte Dame and Alabama are the 3 Blue Blood programs that you do not say no to. He understands that when you hire the right coach at those institutions you win National Championships.

      1. No thx. SUCC deserves James Franklin, the most incompetent HC in Div. 1 FB. The man needed one 1st down to win the RB and instead snatches an ugly, stupid, defeat from the jaws of an easy victory.

        Had I been the Penn St. AD, Franklin would have been fired exactly 5 seconds after his pathetic RB loss.

    There’s no doubt the bozo FB team leads the Pac-12 in testosterone levels, but it wasn’t any help vs Sanford or Oregon St. – bozo testosterone works best against cupcake FB teams.
