Mike Tomlin Angrily Dismisses USC Speculation

Look, for established NFL coaches, college football is a step down.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was not only emphatic but angry he had to discuss USC speculation during his press conference today.

    1. I don’t take that as a clear “no”, my friend. In fact, I hope Carol puts a call into him today. Actually, it would be better if she flew out to meet in person.

      1. Agree. Coach Folt is a killer recruiter… no one can say No to her… time to bat her big brown eyes at whichever coach or recruit needs to be hauled in.

    2. Tomlin wouldn’t have so many wins if the NFL weren’t so rigged.

Don’t believe the NFL is rigged? Listen to what a Super Bowl winner has to say…

It’s why NFL football is listed as “entertainment” and not a sport.

      1. Super Bowl XL Seahawks vs Steelers is all the evidence you need to know the NFL is rigged.

Mike Holmgren said after the game that it was rigged and the NFL never reprimanded him, they didn’t want to shed anymore light on the obvious.

Check out the look on Bill Cower’s face when being handed the Lombardi trophy, he looks embarrassed as hell because he knows the game was rigged, probably why he retired right after supposedly winning it.

      2. Not only is the NFL rigged, but it is in cahoots with your neighbor who shoots phony moon landings in his garage. But good thing your intrepid reporting has brought this to light.

      3. Superbowl 37 was rigged also. According to Dwight Smith who played on the Bucs team in that Superbowl said “they are all rigged and scripted behind the scenes”. Who the heck changes the game plan from the other teams weakness running the ball against them; to the old coaches playbook from the year before? The Friday before the Superbowl? Bill Callahan from the Raiders. The rest is history why Barrett Robbins went on a bender in TJ later that day.

    3. Career NFL guys are not interested in college ball unless desperate ( see Pete )or cannot handle it like Saban or Spurrier. Tomlin gets any open job in the NFL if he leaves Pittsburgh.

      1. There’s definitely some head coaches that think that way. But SC has been a waiting room for a lot of NFL guys between gigs, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Tomlin is likely out at Pittsburgh and he knows it. The last minute, short contract extension (he’s out after two years anyway if not urged to resign), and the fan frustration with 3 post season games in 10 years and not making the playoffs regularly which is likely to be the case again, and a veteran “win now” team with a soon to be retired QB and no QB waiting in the wings, means that the Steelers are going with a new coach for a complete rebuild. I think Tomlin is trying his best to hang on (and it doesn’t help that that his Plan B is out there), but he’s obviously entertaining some college offers,- but he’ll take another good NFL job over a top college job in a heartbeat. I doubt one is coming.

    4. Chris Petersen will be the next head coach at USC.

In order to coax Petersen out of retirement USC had to hand Petersen full control of the program.

Petersen was spotted at the Mater Dei vs Servite game.

You Fickell fanboys can forget about thay clown and his prude of a wife coming to L.A. because those hicks have been kicked to the curb.

      3. CP would be perfect … no baggage just wins. Turned around the Snark mess at Udub just like that making the playoffs and a Rose Bowl. Professional, no non-sense coach. Who teams play solid football. If slapsticks like Kiffy, Snark, and Gomer ( won a RB remember, well Darnold did) can even win a few games … imagine what a real football coach like CP would do.
The ‘retirement’ and then the Fox LA move seems way too convienant and too easy. It has to be between Franklin and Petersen. Aranda will be the LSU coach, IMO.
Cannot go wrong with either of those 3. Then again you could hire Chuck Weis and it wouldn’t be any worse than the last 3 losers we have had.

  2. Any coach who wants to continue being the coach at his current position would not speculate on being interested in a job at this time. It’s that simple. Instead of being an asshat about it, he could have been flattered, but no he’s an asshat. I will never watch a game coached by that asshat in the coliseum as long as I live. He can bend over in front of Traveler and pick up the soap.

  4. There is no greater danger nor poison than open speculation but the histrionics to shut down the convo plus the direct evasion was telling.

There was no “it’s a lie, my agents or anyone has not nor won’t be in contact…” or the more plausible (because it’s a known that outreach from USC and LSU has happened), “They reached out to my agent and as much as I appreciate the respect, it’s a hard pass and good luck to them”.

It was instead, “My job is the best job in professional sports…”, the stranger and telling, “the booster checks aren’t big enough” and “Do you ask Sean Peyton?”, and even more telling, “Never say never but never…” and “Don’t ask me that again!” Those are rehearsed political lines to avoid and shut down.

    1. PS, Perhaps the even more funny part is the “Should I storm off or would that be too much?” He knows that his camp has been contacted, and his deflection of “where’d that come from?” rather than naming the leaker, Carson Palmer and saying he has bad info, which he knows isn’t true… Smoke meet fire. Tomlin has long worn out his welcome and Super Bowl energy shield, and history says this is about the time the Rooney family urges a coach into a warm and fuzzy resignation. The Rooney’s held out til the contract expired then gave him a contract to end in ’24, which makes it easy to buy out and move on. Same age (49) as Cowher was when he “resigned” from the Steelers for the same span of time (15 years). A bad year this year– and they’re 3-3, and he’s well on his way to the curb. Sign with ‘SC and he’s looking at a +$2 million a season raise over +10 years of stability, and the chance to rack of championships in a way that’s not happened for him for 10 years of mediocrity and fan hate at Pittsburgh. Any wise coach and agent already has made the calculations.

      1. I’m gonna like it when Tomlin is being introduced as the new Head Coach of USC and has to say, “Well, I didn’t say anything about what would happen if it were TWO blanks checks, 100 pounds of Pineapple Express and a blowjob…”

    2. He made himself look stupid especially why his name came up in the first place. It was Carson Palmer former great QB who’s is on the search committee for the next head coach, for USC. He leaked it on the Dan Patrick show. That’s why those other names were not mentioned or asked. They are not on the search list. Trying to play the media with his tirade of nonsense. He knows he’s been contacted just trying to play the Jedi mind trick and blame the media. That’s all. By the way there’s plenty of boosters at SC with big checks. He might not get the offer now because of his disrespect and tirade towards them.

  5. I guess we can get back to rehashing the usual names…
But heck, Carson Palmer DID inject some interest into the discussion.

BTW, would Kurt Warner leave Arizona and be QB coach (maybe OC) at USC if offered
by a macho HC like Aranda or Matt Campbell (both more defensive oriented guys)?

Interesting that Aranda, Campbell, and Jon Smith all get into the “meat” of their schedule in the next month. So does James Franklin. There’s gonna be carnage, to be sure…

    1. No more of that dam RPO offense. Get a coach in here that has a fullback.

Oh wait, Dolt and Bohn will not hire him or HER because that would cause SC to play physical football and they are just into mediocrity and playing SOFT football.

    2. I’m going the opposite with Tomlin– I think Tomlin’s just made the confirmation-denial that he’s gonna be at the top of the list. The likely trajectory for him is yet another season of mediocrity makes SC solidified for reasons mentioned above. Otoh, for the college coaches, they’re trying to coach themselves into wins for a better job.

Cincy have a cakewalk, they always do– they’ll even continue being a pretty competitive program as a Power 5/ Big 12. Fickell would probably be dumb to go to SC when he’s at a powerful program going into a Big 12 without Texas and OU, only to go to a program where he has no recruiting ties and no accomplishments under his belt. He’s at the big fish in a little pond yet has never even won his conference. The best I can say for Fickell is that if he wins out, he’s showed that he can beat who he’s supposed to beat where he is.

And oh Gosh, Baylor is gonna not be racking up wins vs 1-6 Kansas, Texas State, and Texas Ladies Teacher’s College, so we’ll see what we really have with Aranda, but it’s cray that he would be candidate at this point. I think the “front runners”(Aranda, Campbell, Franklin) the media has assigned to us would be the death of the program.

    3. Kurt Warner needs to be seen, he’s not interested in a job behind the scenes . He has steady income from the NFL Network, but auditioned for espn’s Monday Night Football, and got bypassed for the no talent, Jason Witten . So I’m going to assume Warner will play it safe, and stay with the gig that he has.

Mike Tomlin – are you F’n kidding me – HOME RUN FOR CAROL AND THE MIDWESTERN AD!!!! Sign him up if you can. He is exactly the same as Pete above – maybe better.

Otherwise go to Utah (make that 2 Utah!!) seriously, there are 2 great coaches in Utah)

    2. Robo 2 inherited a mess. He’s famous for asking, “where’s the big guys?” He finally got players good enough to play at USC and gets a message from Mike on his answering machine. USC is disrespectful in that way.
My grandpa was a baker he told me flour is flour until you want to make something good. Cake flour isn’t good for bread, and bread flour isn’t good for cake. All purpose flour isn’t good for anything. Once Robinson recruited football players he had a team, which he left for Pete to use.

  7. Don’t be surprised if Pete Carroll comes back. He is getting pushed out in Seattle, still wants to coach for maybe 3 or 4 more years, and still owns a house in Southern California. USC should welcome him back if he wants to return, and offer him a short term contract with the opportunity to stay on longer in another capacity within the athletic dept or university. Pete, is all about challenges and turning programs around quickly like he did in Seattle. and previously at SC.

Pete, has unique energy at 70 and even at that age can blow away Uncle Fester, or any of the current assistants. He knows what it takes to move SC forward in the right direction as long as you let him hire the correct assistant coaches. All the other potential hires are a huge gamble and even though we all worry about his age there is no question Pete knows what it takes to win at SC.
Would Bohn have trouble getting along with Carroll absolutely, but Pete would win out no question in a battle of power.

Would he returns..yes he a working man with no desire to drink Mai Tai’s all day on the beaches of Hawaii .but he’s waiting for Bohn to open up the communication lines. It’s one big ego vs. another. Are you worried about his age……….????????? The last time I checked he is just a year or two older than a guy named Nick Saban, and much younger than Bill Snyder when he came back for his final term at Kansas State.

Come on home Pete! We know that there is a rebuilding project that probably only you can turn around quickly because YOU KNOW SC.

If it happens you heard it hear first. If you recall Pete said he has not talked to anyone in a long time at SC so in other words if they want him back they need to open the communication.

What the program really needs right now is a President/CEO of the Football program to safely guide the ship back in the correct direction.
Pete Carroll is the perfect choice………..let Mike Bohn manage all the other teams because I really think he is way over his head managing a major college football program.

  10. A real journalist would of called him out on his comment. No coach Tomlin you being black has nothing to do with this line of questioning. Carson Palmer former USC QB and heisman trophy winner, who is on the search committee for coaching candidates mentioned your name as being on their list for head coaches. Have they reached out to your agent yet? Have you had any conversations about the job? Or you even interested? Basic simple freaking journalism. Nothing but bullying and soft ball questions. 12. Tomlin def was contacted. I think there will be at least some push for a Black coach hire. The Lynn and Bieniemy contact for one shows that’s the case. Raheem Morris, Randall-El, and the better named Troy Brown can’t be far behind. Fortunately Pep Hamilton isn’t being brought up again,- that HC at Memphis stinky stint still hasn’t left him and Lovie Smith’s and Charlie Strong’s underwhelming performances as a college HC will spare us those names.

Actually surprised we haven’t heard Kris Richard’s or Ken Norton Jr.’s name brought up. When Kris was defensive coordinator for three years, the Seahawks ranked first in the NFL in scoring defense in 2015, third in 2016, and 13th in 2017, then he did a pretty solid job at Dallas, and ditto with the Saints.

I’m not promoting this but Kris’s hire wouldn’t be either a token as a Black candidate nor as a Trojan, but a hire because he’s got a strong record, and college and NFL championship rings, and would be a natural recruiter in LA. Funny if he brought Nathaniel Hackett with him,- Kris did play under Paul for a bit and Nathaniel Hackett is a pretty good OC. lol Also making Kris feel weird as a candidate, he’s Donte Williams cousin. Awkwaaard. lol
