Jack Del Rio Coy About USC Job

Former USC linebacker Jack Del Rio was asked about the USC job today. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins.

“I’m gonna channel some Mike Tomlin right now. Did he shut it down or what? Mike’s a beauty. I feel really good about being a defensive coordinator in the NFL, and I like my job.”

The difference is Del Rio really, really wants the USC job.

Here is what he said in 2019 about USC.

“If and when there ever was anything, yeah I would be interested.”

And when he came back to USC for his Hall of Fame induction in 2015, I asked him if he was interested after Pat Haden spoke to him in 2013.

“I still want that job,” Del Rio said. “Just kidding.”

Del Rio was the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator when he interviewed with USC, and assumed interim coach duties when then-coach John Fox underwent surgery.

“It would have been an honor. I don’t think the timing worked,” he said. “They needed a coach (right away). They needed someone to recruit.”

So yes, he wants it.

  1. Jack Del Rio tanked with the Jaguars, he tanked with the Raiders. He’s a wannabe hard ass and the players don’t buy it.

    The one good year he had with the Raiders was due to Bill Musgrave being the offensive coordinator and when Musgrave got too much credit, Del Rio fired him.

    That firing was Drl Rio’s downfall. Del Rio played favorites in the Raiders locker room and lost the team.

    Del Rio is a crap coach, almost as bad ad Jeff Fisher.

    On another note, Notre Dame is said to be interested in Kellen Moore. USC can negotiate with Moore if given permission by the Cowboys, so they better get on it.

        I think Jack is a talented NFL coach…who would be a terrible fit at USC at this time in his life. For one thing, he doesn’t suffer fools graciously….

      I know the ND offense sucks, but the kid is under contract to the end of 2023.

      As stated elsewhere, I think Kellen Moore would be a great OC at USC, but why would he take a demotion to CFB when he has a good job with great O talent in Dallas?

Not only is Del Rio a good coach, but despite Fisher’s tenure with Rams, he had enormous success with the Titans, to include in one season benching media darling Vince Young for Kerry Collins and going 13-3 (well after having went to a Super Bowl and AFC Championship with McNair). Not arguing for his hiring, but I do think Del Rio, provided he only accepted the job with no handcuffs from Folt and the BOT), could be a good hire (certainly better than those rumored, other than Peterson – he and O’Brien both would be fantastic hires).

  3. The blogger also forgot to mention that USC did in fact once offer the job to Del Rio. They sent him a contract and everything.

    But, Del Rio passed. The Jacksonville owner (Wayne Weaver?) wanted to let Del Rio go and go in a new direction. But if he fired him he would have owed Del Rio $15 million per his contract. If USC hired Del Rio than the Jacksonville owner would not have had to pay anything. So the Jacksonville owner waited and prayed for Del Rio to take the USC job so he wouldn’t have to pay.

    Del Rio knew this and instead opted to stay with Jacksonville. You don’t walk away from $15 million there.

Got in late with my reply on another post, but again I say, “What about Ken Norton Jr.?”He’s a solid NFL defensive coordinator, has a deep pro pedigree and knows L.A. as well as USC.He’s no wannabe – he’s the son of the former heavyweight champ.All the non – discipline would dry up in a hurry, he can recruit – and he has Norm Chow’s number in his Rolodex.Lastly, he would be the minority hire that could relate to the players.

    2. I like Norton, but I think all of us were hoping for someone with head coaching experience. The last time we gave the job to someone without head coaching experience, we got the Village Idiot.

      That being said Norton has more pedigree, experience, and football resume (both as a player and coach) than Gomer ever had.

    3. Norm Chow, that’s funny. The guy hasn’t coached in forever. After USC he was terrible. We might as well bring back Tee Martin as our OC if that’s where we’re headed.

    4. I’d take Norton, Jr. back as DC but not as HC.

      But, because he’s a die hard Bruin, the only reason he worked at SC was because he was such close friends with Pete Carroll in the NFL. I don’t think he’d come back to Troy under any other circumstances.

  6. I wouldn’t go with JDR. I just think that you are taking a chance. He’s not a proven winner. His career record as a HC is 93-94. Sometimes it works. Pete Carroll had a similar record as a HC before SC hired him. But can we take a chance of getting another mediocre coach and being stuck with him for another 5 years? I go with a proven winner. Start out with Luke Fickell. Make him tell you no. If he does then there are plenty of other outstanding coaches out there who would be interested. This is the best chance we have had in a long time to get a real good coach. We can’t screw up again. That’s why if SC loses all the rest of their games, I won’t be shedding any tears. That will just put more pressure on the elite educational snobs who are in the administration to go out and pay the money for real competence.

  8. Kellen Moore is intriguing. #1 scoring offense in the NFL. Son of a HS school coach who won 21 league and 4 state championships. Played for Chris Petersen.

  9. Jack Del Rio is a fierce competitor, and not a bad coach. However, this time I would pass on him as a candidate we need a proven winner in college football who has won on a consistent basis.

    1. HEAD COACH COMES IN AFTER HIS ASST COACHES RECRUIT …HEAD COACH SHOULD LET HIS ASST COACHES , COACH. A HEAD COACH SETS IN PLACE WHAT AND HOW ALL WILL BE DONE AND OVER SEES THAT IT IS, including recruiting…he is there when a recruit signs with his parents present.

  11. Sean Harlow (son of USC legend Pat Harlow), from San Clemente, just made the block that opened the lane for Arizona running back to score the 1st TD against Green Bay. He ended going to Oregon St. despite the fact that he wanted to go to USC. Because the Village Idiot (or the senile old man he had as an OL coach) didn’t recruit him because he didn’t want competition for Toa Lobendahn. Harlow would have improved the Trojan OL for 4 yrs. Gomer is the coach that just buried the program and demonstrates the damage a bad coach can cause. Bohner needs to do everything possible to avoid a hiring another loser.

    1. As I remember, the guy that didn’t want Sean Harlow was Lane Kiffin. Harlow even had a USC tatoo while he was playing in high school. He was begging to come to SC and all of the USC coaching staff advised Kiffin to offer him a scholarship during his senior season in 2012 but Kiffin just didn’t think that he was college material. Kiff was usually pretty good in his recruits but he missed it on this kid. It happens. Tom Brady was begging to come to SC but John Robinson didn’t think that he could play at the big college level.

    2. hellton was never into being a real SC trojan football coach, he just wanted the millions, never coached real SC football and lied to every parent and athlete he recruited about how he did, and they would be developed …they were not, SC let him commit fraud.

  12. Just a point of Kellen Moore-Offensive Coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.

    Offensive Coordinators don’t always make great head football coaches especially in the college game. For some reason the media puts too much hype on offensive guru’s after 1 season especially in the NFL.

    Just so you know Paul Hackett, was once the offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, and every team in college and the pros wanted to hire him when the Cowboys were winning. He was at the top of his professional as a coordinator, but if you all recall when given the opportunity to be a head coach at Pitt and USC he failed terribly. Great offensive coordinator……………..terrible head coach.

Don’t forget Clay Helton is the one who really put the nail in the USC football coffin at the moment by bringing the air offense to USC, and then hiring Professor Harrell to teach everyone how it work or should I say didn’t work. The Air Raid, and Helton together have ruined the USC football culture.

  14. I think DEL RIO would build a coaching staff like SC did during the 50’s-1980…they would win vs BAMA ND…WHOMEVER. THE ATHLETES WOULD BE IN LINE TO PLAY FOR THEM…That is what it means when quotes like SC recruits itself. AND don’t think his team would not have coaches that can get recruits. This is an extremely intense coach,who remembers his coaches at SC,and he loves SC.

  16. JDR would be the most professional choice aside from Saban. You just look at experience and results, but also evaluate the additional differentiating characteristics a candidate brings to the table; JDR was the #1 LB recruit that had a great college and decent pro career, so he is a living illustration to these 5* kids of what they could aspire to become. He would also bring credibility to recruiting the East Bay which is producing as much talent as the Inland Empire these days and it’s all going out of state.

    No other candidate being mentioned ticks the boxes JDR does – oh and for once we’d have an actual coach that was a TROJAN.

    2. We are all in agreement that we need a proven coach after 10+ years of disasters. I personally like JDR (we used to ride our bikes together from the Row to our Sociology class in the fall of 1984) and he struck me as a guy who did the work and did not expect to be given handouts simply because he was an athlete. This attitude served him well as a player and coach in the NFL. The fact that he is a Trojan is of less importance to me because McKay (Oregon) and P.C. (U of Pacific) were NOT Trojans when they arrived. While Suckissian and Hackett had spent significant time at SC as assistants. We should try for Fickell, Aranda, and a few others mentioned by others on this blog, before we start shaking the tree for NFL assistants. If we do go for JDR, I hope it’s because we could not get a PROVEN College HEAD coach.

  17. My two cents on this,

    Del Rio might be a good head coach. However, I think he would be a better def. cordinator for SC. I still like Aranda, Fickell, an the Iowa St coach. They have head coaching experince in college. Del Rio has experince in the pros, but not college.

    More importantly, who will win the St. vs Loyola game tonight? Loyola is tied for the Angelus League Title as of now, if they win, then they will win the title outright. Loyola’s defnese is pretty good. The DLine coach is an ex USC player who played for the Washingotn Redskins.

    My prediction is, Loyola 37- St. Paul 20.

      The reason that I wrote the prediciton is because you went to St. Paul and I went to Loyola. St. Paul hd/has a great history in football, you had Ancich as a head coach. The first time Loyola and St. Paul met was in 1975 for the CIF 4A Championship. St. Paul scored two touchdowns and missed an extra point. They scored 13 points. Loyola scored two touchndowns and made the two extra points. 14 points for Loyola. Loyola not only won the CIF 4A Title but they were named High School National Champions that year. The coaches for Loyola played for and coached with Ancich.

      When Ancich passed away, there were former players from Loyola, St. Paul, Servite, and St. Bernards, and other Catholic high schools. I went due to the respect that we had for him and because the linkage from our coaches that respected him. It felt like a big reunion fromn playing against the other players.

  19. JACK DEL RIO WOULD BE A GREAT HEAD COACH. JEFF FISHER AS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. BOTH HAVE HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE IN THE NFL.. THAT’S WHAT THE COLLEGE PLAYERS WANT. SOMEONE WHO KNOW THE NEXT LEVEL OF FOOTBALL. THE USC PLAYERS AREN’T GOING ON TO GRADUATE SCHOOL, THEY’RE HOPING FOR THE NFL. BOTH THESE COACHES KNOW THE LEGACY OF USC FOOTBALL AND WHAT IT TAKE TO WIN. NO BULLSHIT, JUST HARD WORK AND LOTS OF PHYSICAL CONTACT AT PRACTICE. RECRUITING AND FAN ATTENDANCE WILL IMPROVE IMMEDIATELY. I GUARANTEE YOU THEY WON’T BE HAVE A PRACTICE WITH PUMPKINS!!
