USC Morning Buzz: Bring On A Bowl!

USC has sure changed its tune in the past year on a bowl game.

“We definitely . . . that’s why we want to play these games, we want to make sure we put our best foot forward and make sure we get to a bowl the right way,” Donte Williams said Tuesday.

But last year after going 4-1, USC begged off playing in a bowl even though the team wanted to play.

Mike Bohn and Clay Helton decided otherwise, unwilling to go to a bowl without a healthy Kedon Slovis, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Like I said, the rest of the team wanted to play but they didn’t get a say.

  • Maybe Donte Williams sounded so confident about picking one QB on Monday night because he knew Kedon Slovis was not even going to practice Tuesday because of a leg injury.
  • Korey Foreman has a concussion and did not practice Tuesday.

USC spared nothing on the size of those Elite Eight rings. And Desmon Farmer now has two Elite Eight rings because he got one in 2001 as a player.

    1. Scott Wolf is Luke Fickell’s #1 Fanboy!

      LMFAO!

      WHAT A LOSER!

Notice how Wolf has shied away from the head coach hiring topic?

If I were him I would to having fucking embarrassed himself by hitching his wagon, going all in and being that hick Fickell’s #1 boot licker.

      Damn!

      1. Humans have a way of forgetting pain…I think that was the season with 6 or 7straight losses at the end? Would have been about the time of McGinnest and Johnny Morton, so there was talent.

Sadly, since the mid-80s, there have been all that many good years outside of Pete. Makes one wonder…

      2. Bourbon has elucidated on 1983, where there absolutely was talent, but the team was horrid…by 1991 the writing was on the wall for Smith, as was the case in 2000 for Hack…but 1983 went from transition year with low expectations (for that era, like 7-4 at worst), to disaster (including the horrid loss at home to Kansas and the beginning of the no fun era with ND).

Maybe in retrospect Coach McKay would have been wise to withhold any word of his departure until the week before the UCLA game (when natural “hatred-adrenaline” takes over as a motivator)….

      5. Some of the bad years were “one offs”.
1975–the McKay midseason announcement. After Mizzou spanked JR in his first game….11-1
1983–probation year 3 of 4. RB win with same talent 1984. Smith 87,88,89 were pretty solid.
1991–Smith swansong. Some talent returned and a few goods years with JRII.
2000–there was talent. Palmer. Polamalu. Grote. Kareem Kelly. Alex Holmes. Sultan. Just took the right coach.
        2009-16–great talent. Poor coaching.
        2021–I dunno.

      1. SUCC celebrates it’s Elite Eight 19 point slaughter defeat with rings – LOL!!! What a Joke. Will the bozos hang a commemorating banner in Galen Barn?

Twenty years in the future, “Daddy where did you get the big, ugly ring.”

“Well son, I was a member to the bozo bb team that lost 2021 NCAA tournament Elite Eight game to Gonzaga by 19 points.” “At Clown U son, you get big rings to celebrate gross, humiliating network TV BB losses”

        #OOOOOOOOOferever and proud of it

      1. For a team to show up and play, it will cost around $1 mil for them to show up. Travel, hotel, travel, meals, fun stuff for the boys. If SC shows up, then all they have are meals, buses, and one hotel night. Plus the team must be paid at least $500k to make it worth their while.

    1. Big donors need to form a cartel and say “So long, Carol, we are taking our $$$$$ elsewhere until you show that USC gets back to being USC.” Best case scenario is that Carol is early retired.

      1. Michael, I would be ok with giving her the mansion for 5 more years – hell 10 – if she will take that early retirement package. Can’t waste another minute!

  3. This season has been so UNFAIR to SC!!! We have to play the Pac12 Championship in Vegas on Fri 3 Dec; then go to play Cal the next day in Berkeley. This very well may affect our prep for the College Football Playoff. As Clay used to say, “We came up just one play short.”

    1. There’s always that 10% chance of snow in December in Berkeley. Hell week 1972. Glorious. We slept outside in the freezing mud for 3days.

Cal has a running game tailored for mud. Likewise the defense. Still trying to get a bead on the coaching staff.

      2. Cal,

Glad to see ya. Covid is no joke. Hope the players get better from that. I had covid and i was one of the lucky ones. it only lingered for about a good month or so.

Then we go up there and beat the long hair hippies of Cal when they are better. I say that to my very good friends who went to CAL. Wilcox will get better. Give him another year or so. He needs to recruit and get he players. We will see if he can.

      3. An Arizona Highway Patrol officer stops a Harley for traveling faster than the posted speed limit.  He starts the stop by asking the biker his name.

        ‘Fred,’ he replies.

        ‘Fred what?’ the officer asks.

        ‘Just Fred,’ the man responds.

The officer, in a good mood, thinks he might just give the biker a break, and write him out a warning instead of a ticket. The officer presses him for the last name.
The man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it.

The officer thinks that he has a nut case on his hands but plays along with it. ‘Tell me, Fred, how did you lose your last name?’

The biker replies, ‘It’s a long story, so stay with me. I was born Fred Johnson. I studied hard and got good grades. When I got older, I realized that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college, medical school, internship, residency, and finally got my degree, so I was Fred Johnson, MD.

After a while I got bored being a doctor, so I decided to go back to school. Dentistry was my dream! Got all the way through School, got my degree, so then I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS.

Got bored doing dentistry, so I started fooling around with my assistant and she gave me VD, so now I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS, with VD.

Well, the ADA found out about the VD, so they took away my DDS. Then I was Fred Johnson, MD, with VD.

Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Johnson with VD.

Then the VD took away my Johnson, so now I am Just Fred.’

The officer walked away in tears, laughing.

      5. …and I know you Cal guys loved it when Dr. Art Bartner and the Spirit of Troy band would take over Union Square* on Friday and blast out an hour plus of USC fight songs.

Then, about 25,000 (often drunk) alums, students, fans take over the cable cars in their Cardinal and Gold yelling fight songs all up and down Powell and Mason, etc.

With a quiet little pied-et-terre on Nob Hill now, I can see why y’all hate the USC road trip to the Bay. I’m thinking its a ghost town this year.

*the only way to get the throng of rough sleepers to vacate the Square for a while and return back to the ‘loin.

  4. Mike Bohn Extra Special Announcement:
The Pac 12 Conference Rules provide for a northern and southern representative to compete in a Conference Championship Game in the first week of December. This is why I am so proud to announce that USC will be playing Cal the day AFTER that game (a game which already signaled the official end of the Pac 12 season) . In other words I have contracted for USC to compete in a meaningless game without precedent. This special arrangement will stand as a testament to my reign as USC Athletic Director –a testimonial which I trust will never be surpassed or equaled.
[Critics —if you can’t celebrate this achievement for it’s own sake —please, at least, view this mammoth event as USC’s “Bowl Game”]……

  6. Hard to see this squad winning 2 of 3 under any circumstance, but if they can then go to a bottom dweller bowl and get some game reps.

I feel so incredibly sad for the 4-5 yr Sr’s (and Drake) who came to USC to be winners and were let down by coaching and admin. If you enrolled in 2018, how miserable have the 4 yrs been?
