What James Franklin’s Big New Contract Means

James Franklin received a 10-year contract from Penn State today at $8.5 million per season. The school buyout is his full remaining salary plus a loan. His buyout if he leaves this year is $12 million this year, $8 million next year and $6 million in 2023.

Translation: Franklin wanted the USC or LSU jobs but knew he wasn’t getting them. So he went for the 10-year deal.

USC can stay focused on Luke Fickell, Dave Aranda and Matt Campbell.

  1. That is worse than the Helton deal. He was not won anything at PSU or anywhere he has gone much like Sark, Lane and Harbaugh. Not sure why they gets jobs so easily. Must be good at the interview.

    1. The Mel Tucker deal just blew up the coach’s salary payscale. Before this deal, those getting the monster dollars at least won Natys and Conference championships.
MSU jumped the gun and overpaid Tucker for having a good year [no championship of any kind] and not wanting to get into vicious 3 year circle of hiring and firing coaches.
Another oddity that looks like will turn into common practice is bidding againt yourself – TAMU give Jimbo a raise after only 3 years of the 10 year deal, while winning nothing at TAMU. Again, fear of loss of HC and the ongoing search for replacement came into play.
Being a HC in the P5 just got to become one of the most lucrative jobs in America.
Established winning coaches like Saban, Sweeney, Day, Smart and Riley will surely be gettin BIG pay raises given Tucker’s and Franklin’s deals.
I’m guessing whoever comes here should/will demand $10M per given the above and the cost of living in LA versus wherever they are presently coaching.

    2. Listen kids. If you want to upgrade in an employee, you go after talents from the best in the industry! I’ve just gave the enough money to go get that talent. It is none other than Dan Quinn former NFL head coach and current successful coordinator! You don’t have to thank me. It’s just pocket change!

    1. Jim Sexton has to have pictures of these ADs … to get these contracts for idiots like Kiffin and Suck and even Gomer ! He gets Franklin 7 mil a year and at the end says “ hey throw in a car too “

      1. and the “automobile allowance” is the coup de grâce. USC Marshall should hire Jimmy Sexton to teach “Negotiation and Persuasion”. He could even bring in Lynn Swann to role-play (which should be Lynn’s penance).

  2. LUKE FICKELL- UPDATE TODAY 11/23/2021: It appears but nothing is certain these days that Fickell will stay at Cincinnati. Once of their top records had this to say: It looks to me like it is Dave Aranda or bust, but I still have a feeling we might see Pete Carroll return to USC if he gets let go by Seattle.

CINCINNATI — There are plenty of rumors and rumblings about Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell’s future in Cincinnati.

The Cats are 11-0 and in the mix for one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff. Could Fickell leave Cincinnati for Florida, LSU or another elite head coaching job?

The answer is no according to four-star defensive end Mario Eugenio, who visited Cincinnati this weekend.

“We spoke about it and he’s (Fickell) not leaving,” Eugenio told Sports Illustrated’s John Garcia. “He’s not planning on leaving. We were talking—my dad’s the one who asked the question—and he said he’s not leaving. He’s not planning on moving, money wasn’t a factor to him. So he’s staying in Cincinnati and help them stay a winning program.”

    1. That’s what you have to say to recruits. Fickell believes that at this moment. He may consider USC at some future date (12/4 pm) and then all bets are off.

    2. While I’m not saying those aren’t truthful statements by Fickell to this kid and his family, what else are you supposed to tell a recruit a this time?

    3. Fickell can stay … yes, he is better than the past 3 idiots at USC. But Aranda has seen the big time vs big time competition and done well.
SoCal kid vs Midwest in LA. Easy choice.

    4. My guess is one big reason why Fickell would turn down SC is because his dream job is Ohio State. Should OSU win the Naty in the near future, Ryan Day just may move on to the NFL.
In the interim, Fickell is getting good bucks [will probably get an icrease given the current landscape], runs a successful program and has a great quality of life situation balancing work/family.

      1. Fickell stays at Cincy, makes good cash winning against inferior programs, keeps his wife and large Catholic family happy, and then takes tOSU or ND job.

  3. No extension on Aranda is good news. Baylor is not a first tier job, so my guess he may well be moving. Can USC be the winner here? No reason why not, unless Folt f’s it up.

    1. Drive a Brinks truck (with the Trojan logo garishly painted on the side) by the Aranda homestead in Waco this week. It’s a subtle message to Dave during this “quiet” time in coaching recruiting that the job is his.

Fedex Dave the press clippings from the Bo Pellini firing, the Les Miles firing, and the Orgeron “firing”.

Dude would be crazy to want to go up against Jimbo, Kirby, Nick, Kiff, Stoops, Gators, Boomer Sooner (Riley for now)–and yes, the Fighting Leaches (mike, not the blood sucking worm)–every week.

Come to the Pac 12 where mediocre coaches like the Chipper and Super Mario are “revered.”

  4. Thank god for Penn State and a commitment to always being a bridesmaid!

This is a huge relief. Franklin would have been an upgrade but let’s face it: what has he actually accomplished in terms of conference or national championships? Zilch. One Big 10 championship (5 years ago). No playoff appearances, only 2-2 in NY6 games, and lost the Rose Bowl (giving up 52 points!) with an epic 4th quarter collapse to Clay Helton (!). He’s essentially the East Coast Clay.

    1. No …. he gets real football players, just look at them. His teams play well, if qb not hurt they have two more wins. Franklin is far from dumb ass Gomer. Rose Bowl … ya we saw Darnold win that. Besides in one game anything can happen. Dumb ass Suckisian beat Pete remember.

    2. Franklin just landed the top recruiting class in the country … he isn’t leaving that. Jimbo Fisher has a big class coming too. Beat Bamer head to head for numerous recruits. He isn’t going anywhere. These guys work to hard for that.

  5. There’s an old saying – “You can’t go home again.” Ask John Robinson.I think Pete Carroll knows it too. It’ll never be like the Camelot of old, and the pressure will be greater without Carson Palmer, Troy Polamalu, David Gibson, et al., but it would be amazing to see him seek such a challenge.Snowball’s chance in hell, I say. Time for Bohn to get out the checkbook and usher in the Dave Aranda era.The clock’s ticking, Mike.

  6. Coming to Southern California would be the pinnacle in terms of achievement for Aranda. He WOULD “Be Home Again” with his family and friends AND have one of the top jobs in college football. As a lifelong Dodgers fan, I don’t see him having any trouble getting tickets to Chavez Ravine with his impending salary, either. This job is a layup for him and the guy is the medicine that USC needs.Plus it’ll just piss off that “Just Welfare” guy.

The Bruins got blown out tonight………….As he often says you can’t schedule cupcake games at home and then play a superpower on the road. Cupcake U is now UCLA next time schedule some good teams on the road and at home before you play the big boys.

Gonzaga lost 3 players to the NBA, and UCLA has everyone back, and still got smoked. The game was over in the first 5 minutes. No excuses other than UCLA does not have Sam Gilbert paying all the players anymore nor the Wizard John Wooden.

The Munchkin Mickey Mouse Cronin took his team to Lolly Pop land tonight, and got kicked out of town by the Wicked Team from the Northwest. Your coach apparently needs some platform shoes to get the attention of his players this was the big rematch, and your team failed big time. Big Embarrasment tonight for UCLA, and the entire Pac 12. The Mouse Cronin needs to hide under one of the slot machines in Vegas tonight which won’t matter he is not tall enough to gamble at one of the tables in the casino.

Little tommyd, let me know when Andyain’twinning schedules the #1 team in nation on a neutral court. UCLA will learn more from their early 20 point, blow out loss than SUCC will learn from its Dixie State blow out victory.

  11. I’m really to the point where I would rather USC identify the next great up and coming coach and take a chance. Everyone talks like we have to compete to pay a coach these ridiculous amounts. Why?

I’m really thinking we promote the best DC out there and let them hire some really good coaches.

Franklin is a mediocre coach at best and they are paying him $8.5 million a year? Crazy town.

    1. No no no GameTV! We need a proven coach. The damage that the Village Idiot has inflicted on the fb program requires a proven winner with emphasis on discipline and toughness. We tried promoting the assistant (Gomer), we tried the up and coming young coaches (Kiff & Suckissian) and we have seen the results. It’s time USC actually invests real $$$ in getting a proven coach. Bird legs Dolt and Bohner wanted to go cheap and not pay off the Village Idiot and now for waiting 2 years they have an empty Stadium (which has cost them well above the Gomer Payoff of 2 years ago) and worse they will have to pay 2X what they would have had to pay 2 years ago for a proven winner. Bird Legs and Bohnhead are not fit to be leaders of the University and the Athl Dept. And for proof of that look how quickly SEC leadership fire coaches, make pricey payouts, and spend $$$ to bring in top coaches to have successful fb programs. The revenue generated by fb at a P5 program is about $120M per year, so being cheap on a coaches payout is foolish

      1. BTW, I have been on the Fickell/Aranda bandwagons since about early October. Now that it appears that Fickell is out, I’ll be happy with Aranda. I just have doubts that Bird legs and Bohnhead have the ability to make a good hire.

(I don’t include JR, who was a long time assistant but may have played QB at Oregon way back when)

      1. Tollner
      2. Hackett
      3. Kiff

Bru and Kenan are fighting USC —USC!!—-to play again. They say they are currently involved in a process that “is designed to fail them.”
    What is this?
Why is USC destroying it’s own football program? And —way more importantly —why is it destroying the lives of two of it’s own students? Their appeals should have been fully heard and decided by now. Why are they being left out to dry? Haven’t they suffered enough?

    1. Remember they are a USC kangeroo court, likely comprised of wannabe, jealous dysfunctional people who envy football stars. In their court, they are have the power to prove they are better and more powerful. This court needs to be abolished. Review the Matt Boermeester case. This corrupt court would not take the testimony of his girlfriend who claimed they were playing around. Instead, they accused him of abuse. Thankfully, he fought it in a REAL COURT and won under Title IX. Everyone needs to stand up against this tyranny. folt likely likes the power. She needs to go. There is no real integrity in her.

  13. New and updated list:
    1. Aranda
    2. Aranda
    3. Aranda
    4. Fickell–not coming anyway
    5. Matt Campbell–very loyal to ISU. Has turned down NFL coordinator jobs (and maybe a HC offer) and other HC jobs. Signed a big contract in the last year or two. His players know how to block and tackle. His WR downfield block–just like our WR used to do! His TE’s are a huge part of the middle of the field pass game. He plays superior teams very close–his players don’t give up (unlike the Trojan’s D vs UCLA). He’s a good get for us, irrespective of his results over the years.

    6. The rest: Sitake (I don’t see it), Jon Smith (we have done well with Oregon coaches/players over the years–JR, Norv T), Chris Peterson/Kellen Moore (CP not returning to coaching, Moore may not be as brilliant as you think), Urban (won’t be fired yet), Dan Lanning, Bill O’brien (heading for the NFL),
